I'm a handweaver so I can relate to this and, like moonberrymay, I am in complete awe. I buy, use and sometimes wear saris. Wearing saris is not only fun, they're also GREAT for decorating or making other garments and things out of them.
I weave and I am completely in awe of these gifted craftsmen. If the market for their art is allowed to wither and they are forced to find other avenues of support, the World will be much darker and sadder for the loss. I hope that people of India return to wearing sari's woven by their countrymen, not by machine-driven factories in foreign countries.
I think its because most of these weavers are muslims perhaps thats why goverment is neglecting their art and skills.
