I have always gotten better results and fewer jammed fingers by dorsi-flexing(bending backwards) my wrists to the max and keeping the fingers wide open.
the year 1910 master wang beat the living daylights of out Kenichi ( who was a 5 dan in judo/iaido/jujutsu/kendo. Just to give you an idea that the match that occured at that time wasn't pin feathers and fluff yiquan has real fighting application if you learn the real system.
i call it a zen moment, your body reacts of its own volition and it is so much faster and more powerful than when you consciously tell your body to do somethine. i have done standing zen for 30 years now (i bought the book in the late 70's) and i can tell you it works, in an emergency you will be relaxed and looking up while your body does all the work faster and more powerfully, your heart rate does not even go up, spread the word standing zen is the balm! peace...
Jesus says He doesn't thiink a fight will be ended by one blow or"key" Is that a hold? These are only a few of the many possible block and parry techns. he taught as well as to immediately strike again. He also said the 2nd or third push or Pull" can spell the difference between victory and defeat. These clips are great but only a small piece of the many techniques which start with someone punching or kicking you. so they are totlay defensive.Any time someone punches you or kicks you he is open
Well It can be done. Sawai teaches to react without thinking. It involves a simultaneous block and counter punch usually while guarding vital areas and stepping forward or turning parrying

Timing and softness... It is the most difficult part to neutralize a kick before the attack. Some Yiquan guys are good in this area.
You got to see how fast they can perform the art to defend a kick.
