@comicculturewarrior id say for new people then volume 5 is a good place to start since it has the origin issue and the recap issue but if theyve got enough cash then its a good idea to start at the beginning even though cory walkers damn dot-eyes and ring noses really annoyed me. im looking forward to reading volumes 7 onwards-really cant get enough...sadly mr. bank account doesnt want to play ball :)
I doing greg capullo for my art cource next year, i hear its a big deal seeing as alot of people dont think graphic novels are like 'real art' but anyway can anyone give me any links for info on greg capullo that you think could help me out? anything would help like personal life stuff or stuff on his actually work? thanks :D
@calvolcom no hate. just debate. tell us why he's 'the best ever' and we can continue the discussion. and try to be civil when you do. we like to act like grown-ups around here. Elliott
I never did understand why Kurt killed Dr. Shillinger, but didn't take his notes. Also, I felt like #1 was jumping all over the place, not even giving us a chance to connect with the characters. There is a reason why, because #6 and #7 touched up on all those past events #1 - #5. This book seriously has some crazy potential.
I read the whole thing. I dont think it had the most origional Idea, but I thought it was a nice escape from the world around us.... I mean hey, thats what comics are for right?
I'd still be interested if Ottley was still on the book, but eh...
I thought it was interesting. Wasn't the greatest, most original book in the world. But it was what it was meant to be, an escape. I did like the ink work over Ryan Ottley's pencils. The black placement was something I hadn't scene before in Ottley's Invincible.
I enjoyed this issue. Just my opinion, but you guys are nitpicking this to shreds. It's something that shows promise, and that needs to be acknowledged. Hope to see you two do a Haunt 2 review.
Ps. I followed Ottley on Invincible, and there really is no sign of "meh" in this book. Great comic book, check it out. 4/5 for Haunt 1.
i read the first half and i was getitng in to it but then after THE HAUNT appeared with no apparent rason i just lost interest. Im gonna look and chek the second issue to see if it gets beter or worse.
I don't know of any mainstream comic book writers who are true Christians, which may play a part in it. It could be out of fear of alienating people, but you definitely don't see too many positive portrayals of Christians in comics, which is fine with me as long as it's bashing the hypocrisy and not the faith. I would love to see at least one main character act like a true Christ-like Christian, though.
As for a past character who is good, the pastor in Kingdom Come. I think.
Thats cuz alot of comic writers are into alot of esoteric knowledge and practice scorcery.
But there is a problem though cuz no one knows what a real Christian is. What scripture says you cant cuss, smoke or get prostitutes? Dont you know in Duet the scriptures say you can rape a woman?
hey apparently its been a decade (10 years) that bendis has been working at marvel! you guys should do a video ecknowledging his awsomeness lololol (seriously WTF bendis?)
You guys are right, this book REEKED of McFarlane and completely felt like the Image shit that I used to read as a kid. I got about half way through this book and decided it was not for me. So glad I didn't just buy it.
Haunt looks so much like a Spawn retcon that it actually feels like Mcfarlane himself ghost wrote it (pun intended)
Besides, even though I acknowledge that Kirkman is a great writer, I don't think he would be the got to guy when it comes down to writing a honest religious character. You remember he started his carreer doing Battle Pope, right? Can't get any more religiously hypocritical than that.
The last honest priest I read in comics is Norman McKay.
i enjoyed the book alot. I thought the art and writing was fine, but alot of it was just set up for future issues, there were about 4 plot lines that were hinted as it went along
Someone started talking to me about hte HAUNT they started by saying it was krik man and ottley , then they talked me about th berother who was dead i was kind of itnerest but suddenly the brothers became THE HAUNT.
Im only 16 and i havent read many 90s comic books, only the ones worth reading, but when they told me about this i thought... that feels like the 90´s image.
Ya, you might want to wait until issue 3 or 4. Apparently the book really starts to pick up in the next couple issues, but what I've read so far I've really enjoyed.
"Batman & Robin" is just fucking great! I just wanted to mention RR and BG. Yost is starting to hit his stride with "Red Robin" and "Batgirl" is really getting good, in my opinion.
OH SHI. I think I got the characters' ideals watching this review. The brothers had a good and bad side. The priest had his vices and the hero (soldier) had his vice (violence?)
u hit the nail right on the head,Jose. l thumbed thru this comic a couple of weeks ago and it was like plowing thru the worsst off the 90's. McFarlane who l never thought was that great 2 begin with' just made this comic feel so dated. 2 bad, cause u got Kirkman;a writing savant Otley;who u guys know l don't care 4, but at least he's contemporary, and Capullo; who has McF,s style, but is better at it than he is, and finally McF whose stamp did just enough 2 make me say at my bookstore.......pass!
Hey Elliot, have you ever read Nemesis the Warlock by Pat Mills and Kev O'Neill, that has probably some of the most biting religious subtexts I've ever seen in comics.
Can't say that its too kind towards religion though, Torguemada is an evil sadistic bastard :D
I'm sure you will, just pop into Forbidden Planet on Shaftesbury Avenue and they'll have it. The Complete Nemesis the Warlock vol 1 is the one to look out for.
No I didn't but Like I said to each their own man, I apologize for the out burst, It's just I've been a fan of Todds for a long time and he does get hate but probably rightful so, then again I am attracted to Dark comics like Hellboy, Ghost Rider, Spawn I just have a soft spot for Spawn since it was the first comic I ever read.
Again I apologize for the outburst it's not in me to do stupid stuff like that.
Like zip said to each his own, for my part I've always disliked Mcfarlanes art going back 20 years, his terrible layouts, odd panel placements, insane amounts of cross-hatching everywhere and Capullo is basically Mini-me to Mcfarlanes Doctor Evil.
You can tell that Ottley tried his best to save this book but was overwhelmed by the other two. And the character design is so derivitive that its almost a parody, cross spider-man and spawn and throw loads of spunk everywhere and thats it.
hey elliot seeing how your in the writing industry how much money does someone like geoff jonns and bendis make? and how much would a traditional comic writer make if this is there career?
I have no idea how much they make. I can guess, based on what some other writers I know. While it'skind of bad form for writers to talk page-rates (kinda like you never ask someone how much they make in salary) I will say that if you're a name writer and get a couple books to write, you should make enough to pay your mortgage and your bills, which is pretty nice considering you spend all day writing about folks in tights.
I don't know what happened with Todd McFarlane's art, it just sucks now. About 15 years ago he just through in the towel. His Spiderman run in the 80's is probably some of the coolest pencils ever.
this threads now dead but invincible didnt get good until the fourth volume in my opinion but thats just how kirkman likes to do things

NEW ARTISTS, NEW WRITERS are needed in the comic industry..Or else i predict superhero books will be eclipsed by Crime and Horror titles
