If you have even a glimpse of his dramatic acting in Apollo13, Saving Private Ryan, Road to Perdition, and Philadelphia, you would not say with such haste 'unconvincing'.

I love Tom Hanks, but this awardwas given way, way too early in his career. The proof of this is just look at the increcible lifelong artists who received this honor "after" Tom. Clearly, they should have come first. But perhaps this was a "politically correct" award to give in lieu of some of the social issue roles Tom played - but that's not a good enough reason. And quite honestly, I believe Tom felt the same way - that might be why he donated the award to a Disney World park attraction.

You have to wonder why would someone be so quick to give away such a prestigious award, unless the recipient felt he wasn't truly deserving of it so early in his career - espcieally when compared to other deserving recipients who were given the AFI award after Tom.
