Oil independence is utter horseshit. The US uses 20 million barrels per day and only produces 5. Show me where to get 15 million barrels. And don't bother saying Alaska, since even a full development of the ANWAR (which would take 10 years) would only produce 1 million per day.

until you can have a noticable impact of this"transition", 10-15 years will be gone,if you invest the same money in off shore wind parks and the different ways solar energie can be used( not just photovoltaik cells) you will get more in the end.starting to drill now will only slow down the effort to become energie independent/sufficent

Over 70% of the country is saying "drill here, drill now." If the gas prices were all just trumped up so that there would be public pressure to lift the ban on offshore drilling,(and they probably were!) then let the bastards drill. Any money I can save at the pump is going straight to insulating my home so I can save energy and eventually money. And every drop of oil drilled at home keeps money in our economy so we can afford to transition.

70% of the country also thinks that we would keep that oil for our selfs when in reality is bullshit even before that oil is drilled it will have an owner to the highest bidder of the oil market, not our hands. Now here is some news flash even if we drill "NOW" we wont see that oil in about 7-10 years and only dropping the price a few cents. If we can develop new sources of energy that helps our economy even more. Not the lie that by drilling the gas prizes will go down.
