I got to see the # 6925 on display on Chamberlain, South Dakota. It was amazing, and sadly it was in pretty bad shape. Never the less, it was an amazing experience!
I would have to guess that one of the problems with the Centennials, which had 2 to 3 times the horsepower of most other locomotives, would have been their inflexibility. While it might have appeared to make more sense to be able to use two locos rather than four to pull the same load, the failure of one would also be like the failure of two of the "conventional" machines.
But then again, who knows what UP's rationale really was?
If you stopped in Cheyenne under the I-80 overpass then you've seen where several of these videos are shot. There's many shots of that particular bridge from my personal & movie vids here.
The Centennials are quite the locos. DDA40X is the EMD name, they are two GP40's in one carboy. They're 6600 horsepower (wow!). They got there name because the first ones were delivered in 1969, just in time for the Centennial of the transcontinental railroad.
That's one big diesel.

Do they have 6944 open where you can go inside? I'l bet 6944 was in better shape than 6925, go look at my video of 6925 to see what I mean.

I mean there were 25 in service in the 80s just like the Big Boys in the 50s.
