  • This wonderful song also appeared in a film called Let Him Have it (1992- based on a true story & directed by Peter Medak/starring Christopher Eccleston & Paul Reynolds). As the film was set in 1951-3, the main character Derek Bentley (played by Christopher Eccleston) kept playing it. It was the first record he bought and he was entranced by her voice.

I first heard this song back in the 90's & am very happy to have found it on YouTube. Wonderful, powerful voice & such a classy looking lady.

  • I had the privilege meeting Miss Starr around 1992, and she was the kindest, most gracious host ever! We laughed and chatted about many things, and it was a dream come true! She can still belt out a song. Truly elegant, Miss Starr is truly a star! Thank you for this great post- I appreciate it.

  • I remember singing this song as a child of the 50's on one of those penny arcade record making machines. WOW! What memories. Always a great song! Thanks.

  • Used to listen to this in Neesoon Singapore in my National Service. 77 now. Great memories.....

  • Memories! Kay Starr was one of those female vocalists I just loved as a teenager in high school and college, as well as my years in the military. Juke boxes in soda shoppes, the Student Union at the University of Maryland - Go Terps! :-) and in the PX at Fort Jackson, SC during my first 4 or 5 months. She, Kitty Kallen, Georgia Gibbs, Jaye P Morgan, Teresa Brewer - I loved them all. Some of them have passed on, but some are still living and hopefully having fun, even if they're not singing.

  • Wayne & Kay : 2 amazing Native American singers

  • Thank you so much for that information!

  • One of the best ever! Brava!

  • Beautiful and petite, Kay was one giant ball of fire...amazing voice out of that diamond. Thank you beautiful lady for sharing your talent with the world.

  • MESMERIZING voice. What a NATURAL GIFT! I happened upon this song some where and I just had to look it up.

  • go on, all gun me down but she reminds me of johnie ray

  • @ray123ification Johnny Ray was so great! He stated his great admiration for Kay Starr, giving her credit for much of his style.

  • I heard it in "Let Him Have It"

  • dude no way... so did i, i love how this song was perfectly used in the movie. great movie by the way

  • Kay Starr is a magnificent performer and I agree that her place in music history should be more prominent. I'm particularly fond of her "Wabash Cannon Ball".

  • Oh yes one of the greats. My Mum had all of her records. I loved "Bonaparte's Retreat"I used to listen to all the 78's of Kay Starrs in the 50's - pure magic!!!

  • I don't know why music history tends to overlook Kay. A great talent.

  • Sunny Gale also had a hit on this song

    and I prefer her version.

  • She along with my favorite & greatest singer ever GOGI GRANT were Patsy Cline's idols according to Patsy's Widower "CHARLIE!"

Kay was the most underated singer of her day. Written off as a "Song Stylist" as purist snobs call jazz singers they don't take to.

She was an idol of Sam Cooke's hence that sliding around on notes which he himself attributed to her.

  • thanks so much for this jason. shes my idol and shes the greatest white singer of all time!!!!

  • Great song.

They should have used it as a theme song for that Pat Sayjack game show.

  • My dear old dad's favourite song........WOW can that lady sing!!

  • I've got an old 78 rpm where she sings 'The Way is Long':

The way is long/the night is dark/but I don't mind/ cause a happy lark will be singin'/at the end of the road.

    I listened to it when I was 6, now I'm 60!

  • Very greatest artist with though pied, voice

  • Oh Kay How GREAT you are !!!

  • What a great, and often under rated, LADY of song!!!!

  • Loved this song. Thanks for posting.

  • wow...my mother in law loved this...but I loved Wayne Newton - does anybody have more of Wayne??

  • This was played continually on the amusements at Blackpool in 1951 - the week before I took my 'O' levels! Great to hear it again!

  • Pure goose bumps.

  • I don't think she needed that microphone!

  • I have always thought that Kay has the best set of pipes in the business - bar none, and I love the bluesy quality she brings to her singing. Billie Holiday said Kay was the only white singer who could sing the blues. That's good enough for me!

  • from what i understand kay is actually native and grew up on a reserve

  • yes that's true. My mum told me that today. Mums 76 and remembers it as she was around then :)

  • Wow! I was just wondering who I could search for... I thought of Kay Starr. I was in 'Annie Get Your Gun' with her when I was 9 years old at The Houston Music Theater. Her voice was stunning. And she was a wonderful lady.

  • Mother always tells me about the crush my Father had on Kay Starr when he was a kid. I can understand why he did! She was beautiful and had such a fabulous voice! They don't make 'em like this anymore!

  • What a voice! breathtaking!
