I suppose a lot of people think these Gorilla's should be released or moved to another zoo, but that's all easier said then done, and to release these animals after they've, in all likeliness, was born in captivity would do more harm then good. It's sad this small enclosure is all they know, but it isn't the worst. Look at the bright side and stop being pessimists.

thankfully they don't take many animals from the wild and put them in zoos these days, most are born in captivity. But they should put strict laws in place to make zoo enclosure sizes to meet a certain standard (give the animals a place to get out of view occasionally on their own power). Putting them in an enclosure like this just makes them stressed because they have stupid people staring at it and taunting it every day.

The Smithsonian Zoo in Washington DC has signs up that specifically say how to behave around the gorillas: don't stare at them, especially not directly in the eye, don't bang on the glass, reduce your size, don't move rapidly, don't make loud noises, try sitting with your back to the glass looking over your shoulder. Do you think ANYONE observes the rules? Nope, and the animals appear nervous and irritated because of it.

I think it's most likely this Gorilla was born in captivity, he wouldn't be able to miss the wild if he's never experienced it, so I think saying they would be depressed is a little much, that being said captivity sounds better than @YukiN0Yume post.

Look at pictures of gorilla or lets say apes living free and those living in a zoo.... they look different. I have seen how a shimpanzee in my local zoo turned neurotic and started to pick out her own fur and the one working there said that it is normal for animals born incaptivity to do this. It is called hospitalism, you can google it and it can only happen to animals in captivity.
