The origin of this term is from former referee Ben Dreith who used this unique explanation of a personal foul penalty during a 1986 game between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets. After the Jets' Mark Gastineau tackled Bills quarterback Jim Kelly to the ground and started to repeatedly punch him in the head, Dreith announced to the crowd:
"Number 99 of the defense, after tackling the quarterback, was giving him the business down there"
Real athletes like hockey players drop gloves and punch each other accidentally in the helmet all the time. Call them idiots, but they send a message. They dont have to depended on the refs to save them like football eh.
Dude it means he was basically punchin the hell outta him after he tackled him. Watch the new one with Ron Cherry. Left part of the screen 69 u can see it.
Get a source file in avi or wmv format to me and I'll do an entire video in my mash-up style of these two CLASSIC pentalty calls... Check my stuff out. Nice post.

Giving him the business means sitting on top of a guy and punching his face.
Then again, what kind of idiot would punch a football helmet? Good way to break your hand and miss a few games.
Great video man!
