My Lord! There's not a fighter alive that would have come out for round two against Dempsey after that mauling! If Willard somehow stood up for that fourth round, he would have been killed. I'm not even exaggerating. I don't know if you can pay a man enough to take that kind of beating. Willard wasn't much of a boxer but he had one hell of a chin. Dempsey's left hook...Most beautiful punch I ever did see. Just pretend Willard is Vitali Klitschko for a minute and enjoy.
@BrainDeleted - If you watch closely, Jess even lands a few decent punches in the 2nd and 3rd rds. Not much, but after that 1st rd. beating it shows what kind of heart Jess had. Dempseys hook was lethal. Dempsey would do to the K bros. the same as he did to Willard.
@RichCwm Please dude, Hayes bum ass was slippingthe shit out of Klitschkos jabs. Dempsey would make WK look like he was in bullet-time. And Wlad's glass jaw isn't taking one of those hooks, let alone the 20 plus Willard took in the first round. I'm not even going to bring up stamina.

@RichCwm He was a bum? He died of his injury's. He took suck a beating from Dempsey but he wouldn't go down cause he was holding the title. That's what i call pure Heart.
I hate to see the people in the audience wearing their Fedora hats, waving their canes, smoking their cigars, throwing bets of dollars at the ring side... Shit.. those people piss me off. They do not value and respect what's between these two men
Dempsey is one of my fav fighters because he was relentless with his attacks & he was a hell of a fighter & I personally think that Demp would destroy alot of fighters in todays era.
I wish so bad that Jack Dempsey gave Jack Johnson a title shot, cause Johnson was an ex-champ and a legend and he deserved it. That would've been an epic fight.
I wonder how many fighters have suffered needless damage because of criminal refereeing like the one in this match ? The poor guy didn't get a chance to collect himself after each knockdown . Dempsey was just awesome .
Savagery! No defense position, no rules against to hit an injured fighter... Thanks God that everything evolves.
I like the agressive style of Dempsey, but what about that theory that he had cheated? Jess was really injured in this fight, too many broken bones (jaw, some ribs and fractures to facial bones), lost some tooth... something that didn't happen in those times...
This is without question the most savage beating in the history of boxing. Dempsey's power and ferocity are outstanding!! Dempsey knew only one method seek and destroy, by the time dempsey was threw with him willard was a broken mess, dempsey showed know mercy, to the extent I believed he was fighting with the intention to kill willard!! Make no mistake this jack dempsey would destroy guys like tyson for breakfast and lennox lewis for supper!!
@jollyroger1889 There's always been the suspicion that Johnson took a dive to Willard to avoid trumped up charges, that he was threatened and blackmailed into throwing the fight, not by Willard but by the authorities who didn't want a black champion.
Wow, 7 knockdowns in the first round and you could see the blood and hear the punches even on this old film. The ref was a jerk who had probably never fought. The announcer said most refs even in those days would have stopped it. It showed what heart Willard had. He deserved to have been champion for that alone. Even in 1923, any decent ref would have stopped it after the first round if not sooner and certainly when Willard couldn't hold his arms up anymore.
Wow no heavyweight in todays era of boxing would last two punches from the Monassa Mauler. Also this video shows how fucked up boxing was back in those days. That was a serious massacre
This fight was easy for Dempsey.Willards technique really sucks here.No jab,no cross,no hooks.Nothing at all.He has only weight and heght. Its not enough to win the fight with Dempsey.
This goes to show the modern fight fan how far the sport has degenerated over the years. Safety measures need to be reconsidered. Fights should not have a set number of rounds. "Fight until you fail." The "3 knockdown rule" is HARMFUL, as it allows an injured fighter to recuperate enough to resume, and take more punishment. Remove the "Neutral Corner" rule. The sport is the FIGHT it needs to be ENDED Quickly, in the TRUE interest of the sport and for the health of the sportsmen.
@iHot68GTX What are you talking about? Have you seend the list of injuries Willard had after this fight? It's a lot longer than any fight in recent memory.
After this fight, as he was being led away from the ring, Willard was heard mumbling,"I've got $100,000 and a farm in Kansas, I've got $100,000 and a farm in Kansas........."
@TEMPmichaelhansen There's film out there of Jess Willard crossing the ring before the fight checking Dempsey's gloves before the fight because of his concern of loaded gloves and he found nothing or at least he didn't complain prior to the fight.
I personally don't think the loaded gloves theory has any merit. If you watch the Luis Resto/Billy Colins fight or the Cotto/Margairito fight you can see the difference a real loaded glove does.
at 8:32 I love how the announcer says: "Why doesn't the referee stop the fight? But Ali Pricord (the ref) comes from the "old school"." LOLOLOL!!!!!!! They had that term way back then....friggin hilarious. I thought 1919 WAS "the old school". I guess there's an even older school.....the 1800's.....lol.
@arequipa1 You've obviously never been punched. Seriously, the problem here was that Willard never gets a chance to recover. Some years after this fight, they enacted a rule that, after a knockdown, the standing fighter has to go to a neutral corner and could resume the attack only after the referee would so allow. This rule was significant in Dempsey's return bout against Tunney in 1927.
@Oathbound ...... yes. A lot of the stuff he said was very funny and poetic....truly a gifted talker/announcer....yes, this guy is way better than lame ass Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley.
Around the 9 minute mark. Great combinations from Dempsey especially the left to the body left to the head combo. He was so ahead of his time he was just amazing.
Hey Dude...If you can post more Dempsey fights...DO IT!!!...I am actually looking for the second fight with Tunney...If you have this, please post it...Hell, if you have any FULL fights from this era or earlier...PLEASE POST IT!!!!!!...Thanx man
I'll look into that fight with Tunney. I' ve been in Florida for the last month so I wasnt able to post anything. I'll be home by the end of this week. I'll upload all of what i got then.
Dempsey, what a fighter! Would have loved to have seen him fight Tyson... You gotta love fighters who come forward and make the fight happen, thats what a champion should do!
Anyone else notice that everyone is wearing the same hat?

A brilliant job by Dempsey against Willard , but of course these were real boxers, this fight would have been stopped by todays refs.
MrChrissy1r 1 year ago
In Willard vs Johnson and Johnson vs Jeffries, the refs never bothered breaking a clinch. Did they start doing that while Willard had the belt?
Willard would have had a much better chance if the ref had let him wrestle. From his earlier fights, that's how he was used to setting up his attack.
