I absolutely love this scene because this proves best how capable Wagner was making complex and humane characters. Wotan is no different from Alberich by stealing the ring for himself and like Alberich points out: by doing so he sins against everything that ever was, is and will be because he should be the upholder of the law. Yet they both have sympathetic sides: Alberich renounces love because his love was rejected and mocked and Wotan cannot be truly free for his own laws bound him. Bravo!
