  • I know of about two hobbyists that have bred them using a series of tanks, and it has been done in a lab. I know many more crabbers that have had crabs in a large tank for 5-8 years, and their crabs will mate and fertilize eggs, but they have no way to save the eggs because of the expense of setting up the proper saltwater tanks.

  • Painted shells are SOOOOOOO bad for crabs!!!

  • get a natural shell you stupid

  • u need to put moore water in the dish dont u see the hermit crab in there and trying to drink it. ): poor hermit crab!

  • @longjohnsilver10 i know people are stupid

  • He should have just said "derp" and ended the video...

  • i love hermit crabs soooo much!!

  • Have a four year old hermit crab. Very active and has a good dive left in the tank:)

  • What i will do is when its breeding season(idk wat breeding season is) and put them in a tank w/ ocean water(by useingsalt frm the pet store)and they will breed.(maby)

  • It is possible, however difficult. But it has been done, so maybe some research before you make these videos would have been smart.

  • its alot easier to breed hermit crabs then it is to breed amano shrimp...its basically the same setup one would have for a aquatic frogs with salt water

  • just saying.... hermit crabs are meant to have natural shells so plz dont get the really ugly painted shells and they are very toxic to them!!!

  • It's not impossible to breed them in captivity, but only 1 person in the world has ever done it and ended up with living babies. He has them now but they aren't old enough to be sold yet. I have a crab care forum with the most current info available anywhere in the world when it comes to hermit crabs and I give it to the world FOR FREE! :) Check my channel for the website address and check us out today. :)

  • NOTHING IS IMMPOSSIBLE I am a strong beleiver in that

  • Why would you have painted shells with fake eyeballs on it? That's deadly to them. Like Seriously?

  • my female hermit crab was caught out of the wild from me and she still lived for 3 years after.

  • THIS GUY NEVER TELLS YOU ANYTHING! HE GIVES NO INFORMATION!!!!!

  • say no to painted shells

  • scientist believe that hermit crabs cannot be forced inside painted shells.

  • 1. Painted shells are bad

    2. They need salt and fresh water

    3. They need more sand to mold

  • um then why did you name it "how to breed pet hermit crabs" if you cant breed them???????

  • Hermit Crab Care : How to Breed a Pet Hermit Crab

It's impossible to breed pet hermit crabs because there is no way to create their natural breeding environment.

    epic fail.

Plus painted shells are cruel and a natural one looks better anyways.

  • hi its my first time having a pet crabs we just caught them in the top of the falls can you tell me what to feed them?crabs nt hermit crabs

  • How about we should stop catching them all together, cordell? They've seen the ocean once, but never again... just wrong.

  • wow, a goldfish on a hermit grab shell, with a googly eyes, oh don't forget those! buy a natural shell for heavens sake!

  • it's so cute

  • i think my hermit crabs laid eggs

  • @MarissaRenaldi really?

  • this guy knows NOTHING!!!!! i've watched most of his videos and he always says it's nearly impossible!!!!! urg!!!! :-S

  • @thegleegirl voted up

  • i deaf, need subtitles.

  • Why have the title saying How to breed a hermit crab,if in the beginning he says there is no possible way?!?!?!!?

  • i can hear you talking so why the subtitles ???

  • @cheryl4967 - Im guessing for the deaf ppl :]

  • @supaflychic911

duh, i am so stupid :O) of course that would be a pretty good reason

  • @SOXFOX painted shells are bad bad bad. when the paint chips. guess what? mr/mrs.hermie dies. they can eat the paint pollute the water and other hermies will die from eating it. SAY NO TO PAINTED SHELLS!

  • you can breed hermit crabs in captivity it has been done get your facts straight

  • Painted shells are awful.

  • cool

  • pheagles777 need to shut up it is no way you can breed a hermit crab

  • yes u can in water

  • so wait you said how to breed captive born hermit crabs so if no one can breed them then how are they captive born???????

  • hermits cant live in that painted shells forever bcuz if the paint flakes off, the can eat it and die.get natural shells

  • if u cant breed hermit crabs then y make a vid dick head

  • Comment removed

  • @DraconianSilenced So? It's not like the crab is negatively affected by it, and if it were so bothered by it, it would change into a new shell. I see hermit crabs who actually prefer painted shells over non painted shells, so I see no problem.

  • @DraconianSilenced actually, these painted shells are not self-painted. they are store bought. i saw a shop selling these colourful shells before. (:

  • @prettiepinksh ok that was my bad lolz.

  • Those painted shells are gaudy. Wouldn't a natural shell look better?

  • @picatsoforfma A natural shell will look better and is also better for a hermit crab. when they paint chops off they eat it and get very sick soo,..

  • @picatsoforfma

actually its been proven that those painted shells can be hazardous to the crab's health because of the types of varnish used to make them shiny. so yes, natural is the way to go

  • @picatsoforfma i would agree to that

  • wtf?????? the last vid i saw bout hermit crabs said they can drown -.-

  • theres alot of debate about hermit crabs being able to drown because they have gills but are land crustaceans

  • they're like frogs...gotta live in water in 1st cycle of life, then wet land the 2nd part

  • they can drown if you dont put the water on the sponge

  • if it says how to breed a hermit crab then oh nevermind

  • My opinion has changed about these videos.

It appears that they only know the very bare bones of hermit crab care. Not all land hermit crabs in captivity are wild caught. It is possible to breed them in the wild, but only by using a great deal of precision, time and money. I am not saying there are no wild caught hermit crabs, in fact most of them are, but I am voicing my opinion that you really shouldnt use only one source of information to research and it certainly shouldnt be this.

  • So whats the point of this video again????

  • getting questions answered

  • you shouldnt put painted shells on hermies... they chip and if the hermie eats it... its a poisined hermie!!

  • oh god,

    everyone on here is stupid,

    ESPECIALLY EXPERT VILLAGE.

  • i read on a website where this woman breeded her hermies but they died right b4 the stage to get into a shell so...... : (

  • if u cant breed a captive born hermit crab how were its parents captive bred?

  • they werent the where taken from the Caribeean WHEN THEY WHERE WILD :)

  • ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh thank you!

  • we could just release the good ones when they get big and strong enough back into the wild. right?

  • ur notreallygood at this are u?

  • if every video your going to say "you cant" and " everything happens in the ocean can you just stop making such stupid videos!

  • You call that respect? you put things on crabs shells which are toxic to them and Also impotantly People dont care properly for these. they need more space, This video is Stupid.

  • how can u tell if its a boy or a girl?

  • just watch his stomache

  • look at the claws. if its red and purpple its a boy if its brown its a girl

  • just look at stomach look it up on hermies

  • u expertpeople are stupid

  • this rocks

  • omg i have that shell kewel but like it already got into 10 more shells or more i dont know

  • If they cant brred why the hell u making videos of pregnant and breeding hermit crabs if you cant even do it

  • To call of those few sillies who were thinking about breeding and also to tell us where they are bred and why so. Call me crazy, but I didn't know that all hermit crabs were wild caught. I am sick of these horribly mean comments. It makes me scared to even look at the comments page any more. What happened to constructive criticism?!

  • Very good video for IDIOTS.

    1. Painted shell? (for idiots only)

    2. How to breed? (learn first how to hold)

    3. It`s impossible to breed....

    ...any quests?

  • ...ya they can breed....of course they can...you can tell if a hermy is male or female be letting it come oout of its shell, flipping it over and on its 2nd pair of legs if there are 2 dots on each one its a female, if not its male, if you flip the female over ond there are a bunch of red dots its pregnate, its almost impossible for the babies to survive tho

  • thats what he said u cant

  • I was looking at my hermit crab when it came almost all the way out of its shell when i saw 3 or 4 round balls at the back end of the crab and I wondered if they were eggs so I wanted to ask someone on youtube to help me so write me back on my channel please.

  • dont thinks that thas was eggs.

They dont have only 3 or 4 eggs they get hundrets of eggs

  • i doubt it's pregnant unless it cam from he wild pregnant, and if it is pregnant, don't expect the eggs to hatch in captivity

  • I don't know why everyone is being so darn rude but he is just letting people know that they can't breed. And for a matter of fact, it is true. People I know that has had Hermit Crabs for years never once discovered them having eggs. And from all the Hermit Crab Care Books I have bought, they all say the same thing... They cannot breed in a aquarium at your house. Anyways, wonderful video, especially for Hermit Crab Beginners! :D

  • How dumb are these people? It is possible. I know a person who lives in florida and she has had a female who had eggs. She also went to a petstore once and found a female with eggs.

  • well maybe the eggs were there when they caught them in the wild to place them in petstores. it is impossible to breed them having eggs is not breeding unless the eggs are to hatch. who knows, maybe they weren't eggs.

  • It auctally is possible. This one lady who lives in flordia her hermit crab thing is outside, and one of her crabs had eggs. But I don't think they hatched.

  • maybe sense it was outside and naturaler she could breed them

  • sorry about spelling on the last comment i has to make room for 500 letters

  • it is posible if you spend alot of money you could get a tub about 20 sq feet ad sand on one side and water on the other make it as normal as posible like a real beach feed them live foods like worms and bugs an also fruts and vegtebls ad smal fish to the water then algeapelets dryplankton musqitolarva an other things like that an you could ad smal shels an live snals in the water so the baby crabs can steal the shel from it

like they would do in the wild

but it would cost alot for a few crab

  • I hate ExpertVillage, what is the point of having a video of a title saying "How to Breed Hermit Crabs" when the answer is you can't...

  • wats the point of putting this shitty video

  • This video should not belong on youtube. for one this guy probly has never ownd a hermit crab in his life and for two he said "you can't breed a captive bred hermit crab" well...how the hell is it captive bred if you can't breed it?

  • they arent bred in captivity they are taken off the beaches in florida and other places and shipped to pet stores

  • i give him credit. i could tell that the hermit crab was in good health cause he was active and his eyes werent cloudy. (dont ask me if its true or not, i've been owning them for about 2 years)

  • cloudy eyes only means they are close to molting.

  • Poor bastard. I'd kill myself if someone glued googly eyes all over me.

  • Aw what a let down thought there was a way to spread crabs...lol

  • his arm was bleeding

    nice job

  • it looks like that crab wants some water

  • painting the shell on a shelled animal may be fun but its actually bad for there health...

not like i give a shit that you did that but just so you know...

  • it's not like they paint the shell with the animal still in it (most of the time - maybe some people do, but they're idiots). Normally the shell is painted seperately, and is then given as an option for the crab to move in to.

Either way, I don't like using them, and don't think they're great for the crab either way.

  • It's not given as an option for the crab to move into. They are forced out of their original shells and forced into the painted shells. There are videos on youtube of this being done. The paint does chip off over time, and the coating used to keep it shiny is toxic. The crabs nibble the chips and can become sick and die.
