  • Nice Smallman.

  • Sickening in the best way possible.

I think I found me a new goal...

  • Jezus, that Smallman looks gorgeous!

  • Thnk you for the great instruction

whats the name of the faster paced song at the beginning ?

  • the right-hand fingering is here,of course essential. But as for example "allemande" by Bach,i have a book where pima is clearly written out for each note,i follow that a bit, then i go by feeling, not even aware of what fingers i use.Does it really have to be as strict and organized as in the book?

  • Here,of course, the right hand fingering is important. But as forother pieces, like "allemande" by Bach, some have written out pima for each note,i only follow that by half, then i go by feeling and don´t even think about what right-hand fingers i use.

  • i find this practise very hard but yet i would like to learn it.how would you suggest to practise, for example;each day an half an a hour to get the rythm.

  • Excelent :)

  • What is the name of the song in the beginning?? :)

  • Thanks for your comment. The music is an original composition by Masakazu Ito, "Memories of the Wind", from his Intimate Guitar CD.

  • what is that incline strip on his guitar by his arm?

  • Thanks for your question. It is an armrest. A feature growing in popularity, armrests offer extra comfort, stability and provide additional protection for the soundboard's finish.

  • @SonataSystems Also it keeps the arm from muting the vibration of the top of the guitar....

  • tremelo how to master it easy . practice pratice and more practice . Start it very slow and i wil be doing a response vid on my own vid of this song soon arriscraft !

  • tremolo is destroying me, i cannot get it lol, but this was helpful thanks

  • i am from buenos aires, argentina, how can i order that dvd and the other from Masakasu technique?

  • Thanks for your interest in Masa's videography series. Please visit his website for more information and to place an order. His web address is masakazuito com. You can find Masa's website using Google to search for his full name, Masakazu Ito.

  • I took classical guitar from Masa in Denver for a Summer, the reason he files his nails in a unique way is to make it easier to use different parts of the nail to achieve different timbre rather than just having every part smooth.

  • Why are his nails files flat

  • Please send your musical performance questions directly to Masakazu Ito. He teaches at Denver University, Lamont School of Music. Thanks for your interest.

  • It gives a stronger tone. Round nails equals weak sound :)

  • Not true at all. I use flat nails as well, but i know some sick players who have round nails

  • I am in the process of recieving a kohno with the thomas humphrey raised fingerboard design. Not as great as the smallman though.

  • Congrats on your new Kohno-- enjoy!

  • Smallman?

  • Yes!

  • thanks

  • yeah what's the secret to play the tremolo really well? is there any second part?

  • Thanks for your inquiry. This is a short preview of Masa's full-length DVD. However, there are other previews available; please visit the "More From: SonataSystems" link and/or subscribe for future previews.

  • damn!! what's the secret!?

  • i remember practicing freestrokes and rest strokes on open strings every day for like 2 months when he was my teacher at lamont. "Masa" is a phenomenal guitarist

  • This is an essential daily exercise for any serious student of the classical guitar - no matter the skill level.

  • wow, the lesson is great. i was also trying to learn tremolo using Am chord p,a,i,m. I like the song you play at 3.50. I guess that song is popular in guitar. Can i know whats the name of that song?

  • Thanks for your comments. The composition is Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra", which Masa uses as the basis for his discussion on tremolo.

  • A good starting point for tremolo studies is Carcassi's Opus 60 No 7 (Study in A min). It juxtaposes tremolo with arpeggios.

  • A definitive treatment of right-hand placement and finger movement. Commendable example of economical and effective technique. My regards.

  • Nice stuff. Where is the left-hand technique video?

  • Thank you for your comments. The left-hand technique production is currently being planned, so please stay tuned! If you haven't joined already, please subscribe to Masa Ito's Google mailing list to stay abreast of upcoming releases.

  • is that a smallman?

  • Yes it is.

  • Haha! I guessed correctly. I live in Australia so I can get smallman and Marty cheaper than anywhere in the world- mooohahahhahahahhaha!

    ps nice guitar.

  • looks like this would have come in handy a few years ago, before I decided to give it all up and focus on other stuff

  • Slick. Amazing chops!

  • Good advice and fine finger movement; kudos for the super production value apparent here....

  • I just went through his Capricho Arabe DVD this weekend and the trailer just scratches the surface, and I really like his "inverted" isolation technique.

  • A tremendous trailer, very enticing! We just ordered the DVD bundle. Looking forward to working through all this material...

  • Masa, great video! Truly you just can't stress the importance of perfecting these mechanics. Also Reminds me of many a time working on this beautiful piece. Thanks for reaching out!

  • Looks like he's playing a Smallman, no? Also, is there a firm release date for this DVD?

  • Thanks for your comments. The guitar is a Greg Smallman. The DVD release date is July 30th.

  • Real secret is practice a hell lot (min 3hr/day)and practice it correctly. Well there are some other factors too I think. I found that normal tension string combine with a slightly shorter nail helps learning it in the beginning (trading off sound qaulity here...). Of course how you position your right hand makes a big difference too. Once you get it it is not a huge deal.. until you start doing 4,5 fingers tremolos ;)

  • Best video I have seen on right hand technique.

  • cool!

  • What's the secret!?!?!?! Where do I get the full video?

  • The expected release date is mid-July. To order the DVD, please visit Masa's videography page on his website, or click on the Sonata Systems link provided here.
