  • Nice sound from the motors working hard there. Why are the 325s never running under their own power anymore? Not that I'm complaining if it means we see more of the 86/87s on them.

  • At the time this video was taken the 325s were dragged from wherever to wherever to save their traction motors from getting worked out. The units were working near enough everyday with heavy loads and it was doing them damage, so 86101 and later 87002 was hired in from the AC Locomotive Group to haul the units. These days have long gone now, as DB Schenker has taken over the mail contracts

  • Nice vid, whats the 86 pulling force in comparison to say a class 56 diesel, Ive often wondered if theyre more powerfull as they have more current available? Any info appreciated !

  • I wouldnt say a sole Class 86 such as this has the pulling force of a Class 56, maybe not even two could match it. However if you look at it from a more economical and faster view, the Class 86 can run at a max of 110mph, compared to the Class 56s 85mph is it? Also the Class 86 has a better accelration compared to any diesel loco, and also electric dont really give off polution obviously. Hope this helps!

  • class 86/1 has 5,000 hp avalable to a class 56's 3,300. the 86/1 is a forunner to the class 87 as it was a 3 loco "test bed" for the trasformer and wheels setts. 86/2 and 4 are only 100mph capable. Using AC electrics would make sence instead of the sheds. Cheeper to run and maintaine. This loco is 40+ years old remember.

  • Regardless of everything you have just said, it is cheaper to run because its running over a fully electrified line! Would you rather have a shed running on a fully electrified line? No...

  • Thats what i said. Do you realize how many class 86's were cut up as they were "life expired" I would far rather had see them and the class 87's taken on by outher companys instead of the shed invason. I cannot se a class 66 lasting for 40 years.

  • @Spectraman3849 that is very true what you just said.

  • classic stuff ,,a monster vid ,,thanks joe

  • Cheers Joe!

  • Nice one & a fav too.Cheers.

  • Cheers Iain!

  • nice vid 5 stars!

  • Cheers mate!

  • Nice one Wooley

  • Cheers Iain!

  • I love those Royal Mail Trains, and having the 86 on front is brilliant...Thanks..5*..Bob

  • First GBRf really got in my good books when they started loco hauling the mails. They had their own 87s, then they had the Riviera 47s when the 87s were sent abroad, and now 86101 and 87002, and its like a lottery, which one are you going to get?! Cheers Bob!

  • AWESOME!!! great vid 5*

  • Cheers James!

  • why does it have a loco on the front when it can run on its own power?

  • Because the service is Sheildmur (Scotland) to Willesden (London) which is a very long daily journey, so they usually just put a loco on half or all the way not to tire them out if you get what im saying.

  • yeah i get ya thanks

  • my vid just shows that anything can do 110 mph when pushed :D

  • Pushed?

  • made to

  • I dont get it

  • anything can be made to go fast

  • Ah! I took it you were saying the 325s were pushing the 86. Speed restriction is 80mph here, and even then it never ran that.

  • lol it runs at 90+ as seen inmy vid

  • Did you use the car to get to where you went? Have you never tried Winwick? Its just the turning off the motorway when you cross the mainline and follow signs.

  • yip, what signs do i look for :P

  • There should be signs for either Earlestown/Winwick Hospital/Vulcan Villiage but its a bridge over the mainline which should have shitloads of veg on it.

  • thanks

  • i got it at speed :D

    i'll post a video response

  • I remember this kind of working when 87's were being used, around 2006 (87022 passing Tebay on the climb to Shap being a memorable sighting). Still, great to see 86101 on top form as ever; hope to bash her again soon. Five stars.

  • Its quite annoying this actually, I used to set out nearly all the time hoping to get the 87s on the mails, and never once did it happen for me, and then this comes along unexpected! Great train though, just a shame they havent been able to put 87002 on it yet

  • Would be great now if they were to use 87002 for futher trial running!

  • Oh, and more 47's on these trains as well would be nice!

  • Oh yeah, especially the claggy ones! Me and Stephen have sent off to go on the Wolverhampton-Cleethorpes tour on the 16th, do you fancy it?

  • Hmm. Depends if there's any seats left and if I'm not doing much. I'll think about it for now, but will be sure to let you know in due course. Cheers for the info.

  • I dont know if there is many, I havent paid yet, me and Stephen are paying on the day. Its £65 but the whole train is First Class. The best option with Spitfire Railtours is to pay on the day really, and especially as its coming up to the day...

  • Very nice!

  • Thanks!

  • Solid gold, Wooly! What's wrong with the 325's though?

  • great i got it on monday at crewe station while i was waiting for the western
