this is one of the best movies and one of the best songs for me!!! congratulations to all those who are behind it.. words aren't enough to express how i felt about this movie and song..
@kinyo88 Everyone thinks the friend is feminine, it's not, the friend in the song is a guy. "J'ai perdu mon ami pour un bouquet de roses que je lui refusais" she just sings it with a long i. Trust me I grew up singing the song lol
I love this song. My mum is French, and watching this movie along with this song which she'd heard so much during her childhood made her cry sooo much. It was as if I'd just shoved an onion in front of her face.
I remember sitting down to watch this movie being like, "well, even if the ending is sad I can handle it" and then by the end I was just sitting there staring at the screen crying while the credits rolled... haha so much for my brief feminist rebellion...

It would've been nice if Norton and Watts had gotten together after filming the movie, it would've, at least to me, made the death of norton's character redeemable, rather than Watts and Schrieber, though I'm uncertain about whether they met before the film project, or whether they got together because of it.
I cried like a baby when I watched this movie! And my heart strings were really tugged at when Tei-Ming (sp?) was putting Walter's things up and Kitty stopped her and started laying them back out, and then in the next shot, you see that she had broken down in tears. Very bittersweet.
The closest song of I've found is sung by Laure Shang on iTunes (A La Claire Fount Aine") The piano sounds a bit louder on the track then it does in the movie and there are not children singing in the courous, but other then that it sounds pretty close...
[spoiler?] why couldnt walter and kitty live happily ever after? walter was ideal...kitty was selfish and petty but found redemption overall. this song is perfect. tragically perfect.
I think they tried to make it more realistic. As much as I'd love the perfect fairy tale ending, it isn't very impossible for both of them to get out of the cholera epidemic.
WhySoGr33n; I think it made the movie even better. I don't know how to explain it, but it just made it seem more real. It's not like some ordinary romantic movie, it's realistic and alot of the time that's how life is. It's always nice to have the "Happily ever after", but that's not how life is and it made me love it even more.
The refrain is bittersweet: "It's been a long time that I've loved you; never will I forget you." The soft repetition is just lovely--this part made me sob.
i havent seen this movie in a while i just remember crying a RIVER during this part. completely did not expect it. thanks for posting this :) fantastic movie. cant wait til ed gets his oscar.

They were together a while before the film (since 2005) and Edward Norton was in a relationship too.
I know what you mean though, it would've been cute.

"A la claire fontaine"
Everybody in the french speaking countries knows that tune. Its a traditional french song of the 18th.
Many versions of this song are on YouTube

At the clear fountain,
While I was strolling by,
I found the water so nice
That I went in to bathe.
So long I've been loving you,
I will never forget you.
Under an oak tree,
I dried myself.
On the highest branch,
A nightingale was singing.
