This is why it is good to view a launch just before dawn. The spacecraft and its exhaust products are actually in sunlight, while the launch site remains in darkness. The exhaust gasses are illuminated by the sunlight and glows (just like our atmosphere does when illuminated by sunlight). You can see the higher concentrations of gasses coming out in bands from each engine. The spacecraft is already well into space when these lighting effects occur, so the gasses are able to spread out.

@DrDoe1 Flares on parachutes. It's standard practice to provide light for the craft. Because they all fall at approximately the same rate, it's easy for our minds to fill in the gaps and see a shape.
