Anyhow, the M1 is called the Garand, not the Grand, even though it was a grand weapon in its day. And yes, it's got a nice balance, so I suppose it's well suited for this kind of work.

A cover can come off because the Marine next to you loses some control of his rifle, too. Anyone who has not had a cover come off while twirling rifles, has either not worn a cover or not twirled rifles much. Marines are not perfect, these guys just work at it hard and long. It has nothing to do with race. I once saw a Marine break his rifle stock during a performance--most of the audience never realized his weapon was in pieces on the grass because he maintained his bearing throughout.

They came back to Scottsburg (my hometown) just last Sunday, 10/10/10. God, it was amazing. I, along with all the other new recruits to the Marine Corps got applauded as a group, and we all stood together. That place was packed, overflowing.
Thank you for sharing this footage. I haven't been on a Marine base for over 20 years now but there is nothing like the "pop and snap" of these weapons to bring it all back. HOORAH!!
