A catapult is a torsion engine. The firing mechanism of a trebuchet uses the gravitational potential energy of a raised counterweight to accelerate the throwing arm and sling. I think having wheels are fairly optional. If your that worried check my second trebuchet video for extra wheel goodness.
By adding wheels to a trebuchets, you increase the energy potential of the trebuchet by allowing it to rock back and forth, decreasing resistance.

also, why are you calling it a trebuchet? it's a catapult. A trebuchet is able to be transported by wheels
