@ksteiger That's what the actual recording sounds like...Spector developed the "Wall of Sound" to overcome the "hum" of AM radio, back in the 60's, because it was horrible. If it's really distorted, you miht want to check your speakers. Sounds fine on my end.
@flash91214 he's still with the concrete blocks and steel re-bar....it's called prison...if you want to talk about phil's work , speak to the most informed man there is...mr. hal blaine
@kcroach79 I did not even think about Depp, but yes, I think he would be a great choice. Since it is an HBO production, it might be a bit too "small time" for Depp...he is quite the star, in his own right. I loved his role in "Blow" ....he really did that one justice.
2:14 "...and the Pope owns 51% of General Motors...: One of my favorite George Harrison songs. Great piece of video work to this song. Too bad Phil didn't try to live by the lyrics a little more. As good a producer as PS was, All Things Must Pass is indeed a masterpiece from George. He was an amazing producer in his own right. As more time goes on, the more George Harrison becomes revered in a world of the metaphysical and universal. Thanks, Gere
@whatanightmare1 I think nicolas cage, would be a better choice for playing phil. cage has a natual quirk to his own personality that would help him bring out the more disturbing aspects of phil's demeanor. but producers want al for the big name recognition and revenue it produces.
@TheBabyboomkidof53 Cage would be good in that role, I agree...height is an issue with casting, as Spector is a very tiny guy...but I'm sure they can deal with that in this age of advanced equipment. I'm really looking forward to that movie. It is supposed to give us a very up close and personal look at how things were. I have always been a huge fan of Spector's work, and was really dissappointed with the turn his life took. It's a sad tale of a madman/genius.
@whatanightmare1 it's to bad that the once "good vibs" produced by a spector song will always be accompanied by an awareness of brutal murder in the same moment. some people think they will celebrate his talents apart from his acts. I dont know......sounds cold to me.
@TheBabyboomkidof53 Yes...it is like his great work has been tainted by scandal, now. Although some things I have read (trial manuscripts, etc) have made me wonder if he really meant to do it, or was it just a horrible accident, but either way, a lady is dead...and that's what everyone remembers. Spector had a horrible car accident in the early 70's, and I just cannot help but wonder if the head injuries he sustained were not behind some of his erratic behavior, because it did get worse.
@whatanightmare1 no he always brandished guns about even in the studio. john lennon would'nt wrok with him after the rock and roll album because of it.when he got ready to do double fantasy he did'nt even consider phil. same with george harrison after his early solo stuff. phil was out because he was to volital.
The tragedy might be Spector's, but gee, the machine of FAME in USA and the rest of the media-infected world is a cruel master, that grinds so many people between its mesmerising wheels.
Few young people realise that the fame they seem to crave (look at all the talent show kids) is a nasty beast that promises much but delivers very little indeed.
@bondiblokeoz You said a lot there...all true, indeed. The Hollywood machine does tend to eat folks alive, then spit them out when it is done with them.
I just get really sad when watching the young, talented Spector and thinking of what his life ultimately became. I know he was always troubled, but in 1974, he almost died in a car crash and he sustained terrible head injury. I cannot help but wonder if that was behind his "coming undone"
You overlooked Leon Russell who was not only a major factor in the Wall of Sound, but a key member of the famous Wrecking Crew before his solo career. He also played for The Stones on Exile on Main Street besides Mad Dogs and Englishmen and with George Harrison at The Concert for Bangladesh,
I'm a long time admirer of Spector; have virtually every 45rpm he issued on Philles inlcuding his LP albums and some on other labels. Years of drug use fried his brain. Simple as that. Tragic.
phil spector was involved in a car accident in the 70s which almost killed him and probably caused frontal lobe damage which could have caused exactly the behavior he became famous for this often was overlooked well into the late 80s
I ran into him several times in the '60's on the Sunset Strip. One of the most eccentric, mousey-looking guys I've EVER seen. He stands about 5' 4" and is definatley a psychotic genius.

he used to not let brian wilson in the studio to watch. jealousy obv. he couldn't figure out how wilson could get the same sound without a bazillion tambourines and also manage to hear every instrument.
Psychopathic genius. You nailed it. Doesn't it hurt to watch the likes of Specter and OJ Simpson spend their last days in prison? I hate watching it but they earned it.

The "wall of sound" was a term first coined by a D.J. used to describe the powerful rush and blend of music from all of the instruments in the recording sessions, whereby Spector didn't separate the instruments. no, he's right. The man is a genius - no doubt about it. And the psychopathic tendency is probably there too. Once you grow up you'll see just how incredibly amazing Phil Spector was at making music. He took exceptionally good artists and somehow made them better. Astonishing range of abilities! Wonderful... but a nutter too, I suspect.
What the fuck are you fighting about, ultimately? What the fuck is there to disagree about? If Phil Spector did this or that, and thus whether everything he ever did, and who he was, was crazy, or a genius? Cause you could never fathom that both could be true? Does what you hear here blow your mind? Of course. Did the person responsible for this do something bad in their lives? Probably! Good god you guys suck.
Remember people, on the coming months of September to December, there were 2 volcanoes that would erupt in the US, the name of these volcanoes have something to do with faith. This eruption is a trumpet blast from God. Repent now people! Avoid pornography, smoking, cursing, fornication, adultery, immorality, occultism etc. Be holy; do not turn to church for salvation, turn to Christ
Phil Spector was a nut just waiting to crack open. Ronnie Bennett was a nut herself for marrying such a creep. The funny thing is everyone who worked with him knew he was a nut case but in the entertainment business no one says anything until its too late. He's serving time for killing a woman who wanted nothing to do with him but then she put herself in this danger by going home with him in the first place.
EXPLANATION why Spector had such a "thing" for guns. In his early years, when he first started making hits (and money)...most record companies were controled by "the mob".....this had to be a frightening situation for Spector to be in. The possibility of him being "strong armed" into letting them move in on him and take over his company....or being killed was an ever present danger. Many believe his gun obsession started with his fear of being killed.
Phil Spector was a recording genious, the best of the best. Too bad that bitch said "no" to him, that's why she's dead. Haha, the one that said "yes" is now living in his mansion.
I just read one of the Ronnettes passed away in February. Loved them and so glad the were together as they were inducted into the Hall of Fame. God Bless in Yeshua, Jesus.
I no longer judge people. I've seen too much that goes on in the real world, the music world, the business world, politics. Folks choose who they want to be with; I doubt he was a perfect gentleman with his women, and then, on one rare occasion shot one. There's probably a pattern, and she took the risk. One death here gets so much attention, and thousands, hundreds of thousands of folks starving in Africa and we ignore them. The money spent on the trial could have been better spent on them.
It wasnt a rare occasion he pulled guns on woman in 4 other cases he also pulled a gun on john lennon and started 2 fights in elevators one with a woman the other with a cop.
Man, talk about blowing everything. He had talent and a career and because he behaved like a savage, now all he has left is a jail cell to sit and rot in for the rest of his life while going toupee-less. Oh, and a gold digger wifey who's probably cleaned out whatever remains of his fortune after paying the lawyers.
I just don't get it. Was he high that night? He doesn't strike me as all there to begin with.
to ShinRyuk: Phil Spector had a "long" history of mental illness & paranoia. He had been on medications for years that caused all the shaking and tremours in his hands. He even shot a gun off in the studio while with John Lennon once. Also it was rumored that on many an ocassion he would point a gun at his girlfriends,, one bullet in the barrel, spin it (russian roulette) and pull the trigger. His luck just ran out this time. He was "always nuts"...this was not a spur of the moment thing
Damn shame what happened, but considering what Ronnie Spector and the Ramones said about him, I'm surprised he didnt get thrown in jail over 25+ years ago.
Despite all his mental troubles, the guy made some incredible records. He's probably the most copied producer in rock history.
He had many musicians playing the same parts, and when technology got better, he recorded the same parts multiple times, thus making it sound thick, and big sounding.
All human behaviour has something to do with what went on in the past. Here's just one fact about Phil....which I am sure has been a foundation for his destructive story. "Born in the Bronx in 1940, to parents whom he later claimed had been first cousins. Spector's father committed suicide when his son was 12."
yes he maybe had organic brain damage, coupled with indescreet drug use,and realizing he is getting over the hill and not getting women like he used to,and feelings of self perceived ontological inadequacy or weakneess,in spite of his spectacular achievements in rock muzac, heends up in a tawdry mansion alone unloved and becoming less agreable evryday, impotent to attract what he wanted and increasing isolation and booze... well ....
Those with interest in West Coast Motown, google "lost my athletic scholarship after participating in the civil rights sit-ins". This is from that page about Frank Wilson of Motown (& note "regulars"): "The[...] musicians for [a particular late '65 Motown session] were pulled from the studio regulars that included Billy Strange, Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Al De Lory, Carol Kaye and Tommy Tedesco.[...] As far as it can be established the tapes were dispatched to Detroit [in] November 1965[....]"
Quote from Frank Wilson of Motown from that page, which says "Frank Wilson March 2009" near the top: "Gordy came out several times [to L.A....] [W]e were taking [him] to the airport[...] and he said, 'What makes you think you can produce?', I said, 'Because I've been producing much of the stuff that you've been hearing'. So he turned to Marc [Gordon] and Hal [Davis]. He said, 'Is that right?' And they said, 'Yes, that's right'." (Matches very well with claims CK made to me JNS about 8 years ago)
More from that page re Motown producer (etc.) Frank Wilson and his peers (who don't include Slutsky, who never attended any '60s Motown session or met Jamerson or Benjamin): "When Berry Gordy decided to open a West Coast Motown office, following his visit there to attend a disc jockey convention in 1963, he asked L.A. veterans Hal Davis, and Marc Gordon to take charge." (Matches what CK's been saying publicly for years -- frequently resulting in scornful reactions from her energetic detractors)
More from that F. Wilson page you can find by googling "I lost my athletic scholarship after participating in the civil rights sit-in demonstrations": "During 1964-65 Frank [Wilson] saw an increasing number of his compositions being released[....] Frank[...] soon found himself[...] supervising recording sessions.[...] At some point in 1965 the decision was taken to launch Frank Wilson as a Motown artist in his own right[... recording in] Armin Steiner's 8 track Sound Recorders studio[....]"
Nobody really could have known how far gone in the head Phil was until recently. Ronnie found out after she was married to him for awhile. He has a 28 year old wife now - is that right? Wow, I hopw she visits him a lot.
phil spector is another example of someone that had it all and threw it away, whats the lesson here? maybe too much drugs, booze and loss of common sense. watch out this dont happen to you.
I'm not sure that you can pick and choose what or what not to do...phil S is phil S....everything about him is him...he could no more stop what he does as you could not stop doing what ever it is that you do. You are sort of like asking for Chocolate without the chocolate taste.

it's funny how people thumbed you down.
it's like Phil is known for being a sexist asshole, and in the last 8 or so years, murderer.
granted he did great work producing, but as a man he's a dick.

I know. the man pulled a gun on John Lennon for gods sake

Damn Phil Spector is ugly but I'll give him credit for putting out awesome music in the 60's though.

no, he's right.

The money spent on the trial could have been better spent on them.

to bruceok: I heard Spector used to play Russin Roulette on some of his dates or girl friends etc. This time his luck ran out of luck and "boom"
inkey2 2 years ago
It wasnt a rare occasion he pulled guns on woman in 4 other cases he also pulled a gun on john lennon and started 2 fights in elevators one with a woman the other with a cop.

Man, talk about blowing everything. He had talent and a career and because he behaved like a savage, now all he has left is a jail cell to sit and rot in for the rest of his life while going toupee-less. Oh, and a gold digger wifey who's probably cleaned out whatever remains of his fortune after paying the lawyers.
I just don't get it. Was he high that night? He doesn't strike me as all there to begin with.
ShiniRyuk 2 years ago
to ShinRyuk: Phil Spector had a "long" history of mental illness & paranoia.

Question: if you could erase from history all of the records he produced in order to save Lana Clarkson's life, would you?
Didn't think so.

Damn shame what happened, but considering what Ronnie Spector and the Ramones said about him, I'm surprised he didnt get thrown in jail over 25+ years ago.
Despite all his mental troubles, the guy made some incredible records. He's probably the most copied producer in rock history.

why do they call it a wall of sound??? I mean isnt all music a wall of sound?
churzz21 2 years ago
He had many musicians playing the same parts, and when technology got better, he recorded the same parts multiple times, thus making it sound thick, and big sounding.
myassishaunted 2 years ago
Sadly...the only "Wall of Sound" will be noisy prison walls...
Should have taken time away from the agressive ego...and just act nice.
Bad attitude and you loose everything.
