very good, except there are a few places where the pedal would have connected the piece more smoothly. Of course using the pedal throughout the entire song is not good like some interpretations, but not at all isn't the best way either, in my opinion. I know Mozart didn't use the pedal, but considering that we have them now, it would sound better with it added.
Very lively and a refreshing contrast to how this is usually played...I don't know if I can stand the humming though. Glenn Gould's eccentricity is better read about than heard.
Gould definitley has a style I notice and ,in that regard, can appreciate.I don't know what it is,but when I hear a piece I never heard before being performed by this guy,4 out of 5 times I know it's him. It's as if my ear can recognize his frequency.
G Gould was a gifted musician, but surely one of the most overrated? Many of his interpretations of the great classics are nothing short of eccentric and bizarre, and this recording of Mozart's Sonata K332 is another example of his interpretive oddness. One gets the impression of someone trying to be different, but the effect is quite ugly.
@bayreuth79 he was always trying to make music sound more pretentious than it actually is. he didn't like Mozart because Mozart was un-pretentious and thought music should sound pleasant first and foremost.
@EMPERORMIKI the Magic Flute was written as a crowd-pleaser for poor people... i meant unpretentious as in he didn't write/play music with the intention of "expressing his artistic genius", he wrote it to entertain
Sounds like a robot playing this piece. Very heavy left hand and no feeling at all. One of the worst interpretations I've heard so far. Uchida's interpretation is one of the best I heard so far.
It was quite disorientating at first but i quite liked it and much more than overly reverential playing-very punchy, especially the cycle of 5ths at 1:00
I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand i feel that it is too fast to appreciate some portions of the piece. And the imbalance (or at least unusual balance) between the left and right hands throws me. But on the other hand, its so phenomenally played and so wonderfully creative that I can't help but love it.
I don't think it's a cold version. A lot of bits are perhaps exaggeratedly staccato - that probably sounded very much like the forte-pianos in Mozart's time. But other bits are positively lyrical and sensitively played - eg. the opening motif or 3:06 - 3:20.
I find it a nice relief from the way people prettify Mozart. (I most prefer period performers of Mozart). It lacks any of Mozart's charm, but on the flip side it has more drive and emphasizes the wonderful staccato aspect of the lines...
There must be as many interpretations as there are players. I never heard this piece before played like that, it opened my mind to listen to it differently. Like for example, he accentuates more the left hand, which is an interesting way to view it. He was a brilliant pianist and yet there might some things I feel prone to disagree with.. perhaps it is that he puts particular touches of his own that sound a bit shocking or extravagant..the high tempo and such, yet I still like it :)
he used to do that all the time, I think he got that habit as a little kid. Then that started to become a problem because he wouldn't stop even for his recordings..
it´s not the way i envision mozart playing it, also not the way i would play it. But damn, there´s an ease to it that makes it very enjoyable, it really sounds like he´s having fun!
Just weirdly played. People would do better then to just go nuts over any recording with the name Gould slapped on it, and maybe do a critical audition of it.
yummy

Glenn Gould did NOTTTT butcher Mozart. Anyone who thinks he did, I would say, is a closed minded TWIT!!!!!

funny thing about this being great is that Gould bloody hated Mozart :P

I much prefer Ingrid Haebler's interpretation of this incredible piece of music. But Glen Gould is a genius.

@pjk I just checked out Haebler's version. You are a man of good taste. :)

@bob51bob I cant find Haebler's version in Youtube. But Barenboim's is available and is wonderful. DO you have Gould playing the middle movement?

I think this is on of the most beautiful and interesting version of Mozart's sonatas:
I think Mozart only cared to enjoy himself and ourselves, and I found it enjoying!

This is Bach ... care to explain how executing a sonata written by Mozart is Bach?

here's what Glen Gould said of Mozart: "the tragedy isn't that mozart died so young, but that he lived so long"
khronos365 2 years ago
There is no emotion in his playing. Yeah he hums, big deal, but for him it's just an innercompetition of how fast he can play it.

I like very much glenn gould's interpretations, but it doesnt mean Mozart wouldn't hate them. It's clearly out of style.
I like it a lot anyway.

The imbalance between the hands is surely a recording defection, maybe microphones were badly placed..

He's playing the piano, but he plays the long passages and the staccato like it's a harpsichord. So precise!
