how do you get your sps corals to grow so fast i used 3 250 watts metal halide 20k and 6 96 watts blue atantics, do you use a phosphate reactor or leds
the only issue i have with bare bottom tanks is that you run the risk of light refracting off the bottom and bleaching your corals. but its just an opinion im not here to talk smack. i work in the aquatic industry. i have found this industry to be very opinionated. your tank is stunning congrats
i have a 6 feet long tank ... and its 9 months old ... i have recently fit 2 t5 54w and i have 2 mh ( i use it only for 2hours daily and t5 for 4 hours daily ) can i keep CLAM and LPS ????????
@corallite on the contrary, sand is usuful when used in a SIX INCH sand bed. It then contains the anerobic bacteria that is quite helpful in reducing nitrates... but very few peaple like a six inch sand bed so it not uncommon to see bare bottom tanks.
@corallite That depends on the type of set up you use of course. I use a plenum setup. Its only real downside is that it takes up space, but I have 0 nitrite, no trace of ammonia/ammonium. I have one heck of a clean up crew, 5 snails per gallon of water 2 brittle stars, and a few critters that I don't know what they are that came along on some live rock, but they are active at night and clean the sand like mad men.
@corallite yeah! reefs do better without sand! sand SUX! just look at all those bare bottom reefs in the caribbean and pacific! YEAH CORALLITE! i'm with you!!!
@corallite Do better without sand but never look better without sand, and there are tonnes of succesful beautiful tanks with sand, plus sand is important for filtration and fish such as gobies, a tank without sand is like a car without wheels, barebottom is UUGGLYY.
You see all these awesome corals, tons of time and money. and you care about what the bottom looks like? not a reef fan! -1 plus it gets covered in coralline algae if you're doing it right.
We'll agree to disagree its our opinions, but to me a reef is healthy happy corals and fish spawning, live rock is pretty important and water changes. sand can help ph and looks nice, can even help stabilize it but so can a protein skimmer and cheato algae. I didn't say a reef was just sps corals either. but if you have them you need pristine water, high flow. Most others have sand have mixed tanks, or sps up on live rock not in the sand. Thanks though to each their own.
@Whitedog2185 i wasnt just saying my opinon. The word "REEF" refers to live rock and sand around it. Corals just grow on reefs. With a properly set up tank with live rock and live sand, there is no need for water changes. Are you saying that you cant have pristine water and high flow in a tank with live rock and sand? This tank does have live rock in it. Having sand can hurt? wow, that's some new info.
Do you even read what i wrote. "sand can help ph and looks nice, can even help stabilize it" Where did i say sand hurt?. You are taking you're pro sand reef statement too far , lol. Also since you don't read and want to troll since its youtube. I also didn't say you couldn't have high flow and live rock in a tank. I said live rock is the main filter you can use more and no sand for the same outcome, with a protein skimmer. No need for water changes? I see need but ok.
@Whitedog2185 now you are just being a regular youtube idiot. Remember typing "sand can help but can also hurt"? where did I take my pro sand statement too far? Apparently you can't remember what you wrote yourself and cant understand what I'm saying. If you are just looking for a senseless conversation, go find someone else. Btw, do you keep a reef tank?
If you want to debate . I like this tank and mine is barebottom also and not sps. lps and zoa's. Theres many ways to run a reef tank that work. You didn't answer no water changes, you didn't say you have a reef tank. then threw in sand can hurt, news to you bit. you also commented on my comment not the other way around. You sidestep like a politician. so not sure a debate would be good but its an offer. any reef tank site i'll debate more.
@Whitedog2185 the "sand can hurt" was a comment made by you according to your channel page. You may like the tank and do that yourself, but you said the other guy wasn't a reef fan because he was more concerned with the sand. Its quite the other way around. lol now you are comparing me to politicians. If you cant take criticism on your post, don't do it others either. Checkout newyorksteelo on youtube, you might learn a few things.
@Whitedog2185 most of the reef sites are filled with nutcases who feel like they should mess with their tanks for hours, every single day. They use all these high equipments and end up having to dose crap everyday to keep their tanks from being "too clean". Then there are people who make use of the sand bed, creatures that live in it and a combination of corals to create a mini ecosystem in their tanks. Those people have less things to worry about with their tanks and actually enjoy their hobby.
I'll post mine when you post yours. Mine is a 28g nano cube with 14k metal halide. And no dosing isn't the ecosystem maintaining itself. you need to add stuff you test for your corals use it up. what way are you going to add them back without dosing or water changes? I take this as a debate not criticism though when you say news to me bit. i take it as trolling if not then by all means keep debating. My tanks has pods, fish, coral, live rock, going on 8 months.bristle worms also.
@Whitedog2185 see, when I see someone use the word "troll" on someone else, it automatically tells me you are just an immature idiot. Do I care if you think I'm trolling? no. And in no way am I interested in wasting time debating with you.
Mine was a 20g with softies, zoa and some lps, until I decided to break it down. Like I said, it wasn't a challenge.
@corallite Sand is more of a choice I've noticed. (Mostly for people whom cannot aquascape!) I personally go for a bare bottom tank when I am looking for a less "Wide open" feel. Take a cramped reef in the ocean for example, Not much sand there 'eh?
@corallite Yeah!! I mean no real reefs have sand do they?? duh! Im sure the great barrier reef would do much better without all that sand at the bottom of the sea! DSB's are natural nitrate reductors hosting bacteria that break down nitrates into harmless nitrogen gas. A much easier way of maintining a reef tank. please correct me if im wrong.
@shardinio your wrong in my opinion, this is a reef TANK not a real reef in the the wild! Large amounts of flow carry the detritus to the overflow, sand beds trap nutrients and DSB's sort of ruin the look of the tank. A DSB in the refugium is a better choice than in the display. I like my tanks to look natural so a shallow bed of sand is a great choice unless you want burrowing/sand sifting fish or inverts.
@RaffleReefer10 each to their own really! Can be done both ways but DSB's do provide an easier way to control nutrients. They dont trap nutrients, they assist in breaking them down helping the tank to take more care of itself but it doesnt mean its the only way to it
@shardinio bacteria can not break down nitrates only the things that cause them in a bare bottom tank you dont have to worry about keeping your sand bed a live i had a dsb and with in a week my nitrates went from 0 to 50 because the sand bed was disterbed and it had anerobic bacteria in which causes nitrates
This is what Kevin Kohen wrote on Reef Builders about the tank.
"This aquarium is not a Zeo tank, and I do not dose a thing. I feed very heavily as there are 10 fish in the aquarium (they must not have liked Jakes video camera) which makes the nutrient export challenging. Just good husbandry performing weekly water changes with Reef Crystals salt, RK2 Skimmer, calcium reactor, phosphate reactor, and a ton of current (4- Vortech MP40 on a 4 foot 120 gallon) and plenty of light."
