Und noch ein mittelmäßiges Heruntergeeiere der Toccata an einer amerikanischen Schrott-Orgel - wann lernen die mal, dass Orgelmusik mehr ist als bwv 565?
Whether the toccata is played super fast or no, surely what matters is that the notes are right? Improvistory as it sounds, Bach was very precise about his notation, and it is in accuracy and fluidity that the sense of a toccata reveals itself., Not through velocity used to hide clumsy playing.
I"m not a musician, except for the 4 years of piano I took when I was young, but I still like this version the best so far. The organ has a special, rumbling sound that I like.
With nervousness or anxiety everything is faster... heart rate, breathing, and physical movements. Being young means less experiences and that just about guarentees he'll experience some performance anxiety and consequently play too fast.
His accuracy and knowledge of the difficult piece bodes well for superior performances in the future.
Acutally it really depends on the room and the instrument. If it's a smaller room then it makes sense play it faster to keep up with the sound bouncing off the walls. If it's a bigger room then the same is true that it should be plaed slower. If you can't hear every note, then you're doing it wrong.
Jeez, everyone is an "expert" on how it should sound. Critique here, critique there. Well, I'm an "amature" and I think he plays it just fine. I sure as hell couldn't play it.
A critique is what makes a musician (or athlete, or artist, or anyone) better, especially if it's warranted. As someone who teaches keyboard performance, this organist needed to slow down. He's young (I'm probably not much older than he is), and for some reason, the younger the musician, the faster he/she plays, thinking that somehow faster equals better. He needs to take into consideration the period practice (e.g. how Bach and contemporaries would've performed) and TEMPO.
Not bad for an amature organist this is one of the most difficult pieces ever written this is not a criticism but this is what you should do next time.
1. Slow down a lot
2. use a bigger pipe organ with 3 or more manuals .
1 the speed actualy worked, and although there might not have been an audience, the face that it is filmed, puts preasure on the preformer, meaning that you somtimes rush,
2 HE MIGHT NOT HAVE ACCES TO AN ORGAN WITH 3 OR MORE MANUALS
There was a version of this piece of music of youtube, no video, just good audio of someone playing very well on a very large sounding organ... where has it gone... PLEASE HELP!
You're funny. It isn't even played whole. Listen to last tacts. WTF?? A lot of mistakes, wrong notes, wrong tempo. To fast so he can't catch all notes and wrong wrong wrong feet playing technique, and this is one of the easiest organ works. He won't be ever good organist if he plays like that
Moreover listen to first tact. There is a mistake in first 6 SECONDS.
"Only way it would have been better is if you could have played it in St Thomas Church Bach's Church in Leipzig Germany. "
He would be laught at. You never seen real organist I think. There are thousands of "players" like this Robbie. And a point is to be good. He's not good at all
Gryszaq's comment was a constructive comment. This person in the video may play well at other times, but here he made some mistakes, and he won't become a good organist unless he gets a lot of practice. I'm not saying he'll never be good, just that he's not that great here.
Too Bad we do not have a recording of Bach and how he would have played it. I bet he would have played it aggressive. But since we do not know, let everyone play the piece how they want. No way is wrong because no one on here has seen JSB play the piece. This kid is good and needs to be encouraged. He does not need prissy bitches giving him a hard time.
Agreed, no one here has "seen" JSB play this piece. Because Bach was aware of human mortality, he WROTE THE NOTES DOWN. Leaving out the fully diminished c# minor arpeggios (mm. 22 - 27) is not a matter of style or "how" someone plays. You can't just leave out the parts you didn't practice.
One thing you could get both E. Power Biggs AND Virgil Fox to agree on; that the "prissy bitch" version was the one Bach wrote. And I would encourage him. To practice.
The largest pipe organ in the world is in convention hall Atlantic City NJ. It's not presently playable because its full of rats. Recordings are avalible at the door. Funds collected go to pay for rat food. The largest playable pipe organ is at Wanker's (Macy's) Philadelphia. It plays twice a day plus concerts if you are lucky. $10.00 get you a try if no one is looking.
$10 for Wanker's? hmmm... don't know what that's all about. But being lucky means going to the free recitals. They're twice daily, Monday - Saturday. At noon every day, 5:30pm on M, Tu, Th and Sat and 7pm on Wed and Friday.
You'd have better luck asking Peter Conte or one of the assistants if you can play --He let me play when I was 11! Otherwise, the gate is locked when the organist isn't there, so you'll have a tough time trying to play when no one is looking.
Wrong notes, timing, piece of shit. Everyone can play like this after few hours of practising, of course if he knows notes. You'll never play good, as you won't play slowly at first, because as I see it's done only for speed not for precision and that is wrong way. You'll never play good thinking like that
i am no organist but as a musician i must say all this kid lacks is some feeling in his playing. he races through the notes as if he was tryin to play faster than himself. this is only my opinion, but i feel his timing needs some work. of course he can obviously interpret bach's work as he wishes, but commonly this piece is playeed with different timing especially in the crecendo after the intro:)
I am not an organist but I played this piece on the Allen Organ after church service. My goodness, I played much slower than him. Someone said I played this like Chopin. Way way wrong man!
you could use some work on keeping the tempo steady. also, it's a little too reed heavy at times. and some of your phasing was off. but other than that, it was ok.
So, do any of you geniuses out there have a recording of Bach himself playing this piece so as to better judge this talented young person's outstanding effort?
i liked it, it may not be perfect, but i`ll appreciate anything thats decent, so , i apreciated this. The least i can say is, well done for trying, no ones playing is perfect.
Do what I did with this piece. Start with RH alon, LH alon, PD, alone. Then add RH&LH, RH&PD, LH&PD. making sure to play slow enough that you get every note correct. Then put everything together at half speed. After you've done this without mistakes us a metronome to gradually increase the tempo. Finally you can add rubato and a sense of line, and also observe cadences. We all want to be able to play a piece from the start, but it doesn't work that way. Good Luck!
lol, you have organ in your name, so I guess you're an expert. You come on to youtube insulting people about organs, now that is a new low, get a life douche bag.
why did u have to be so cruel. u can correct without being harsh. and u being a composer means what?? just cause u compose and understand what needs to be done in ur stuff doesn't mean u know about other peoples work.
No feelings, no emotions, no expression, no message delivered through the song, no style, nothing at all.. an just slow down no a bit, but musch musch more!!!!
What's up with all these professional organ players on this fucking site? Are you guys in a club of assholes who just go around looking for young people to insult? How about this, if he gets a teacher, then all you fuckers get some manners and a life, you fucking virgins.
To be honest, I didn't like it that much. I see talent but you rushed it, as if you had elsewhere to be; I heard no emotion and care in this recording.
Bravo!! Well Done.. Dont lets these assholes discourage you, that was perfected, I liked it very much, and I never thought I'd say this, (because I didnt think it was possible.)but that was faster then the original, very nice ;) keep up the good work, its a gift.
How different... I'm not going to be down right rude like most have been, but I will say that you certainly have an artistic vision, you just need a little help executing it, and correct a few notes, add the missing section, get rid of using the crescendo pedal, and change manuals in a few places... well that about changes the entire thing-sorry
Well OK then, I agree. As for the BWV 544! will now have to look through my collection and see if I have it, thanks, will get round to it. Still a nice piece of music this, and another fave is Widor 5th Symphony opus 42 No-1 Toccata, now that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand more than a Pink Floyd gig! Say in Earls Court 1994
Sounds more like "Sloppy improv on Bach's Toccata in D Minor, skipping all the hard parts." By the way, where's the Fugue? (I haven't read all 56 comments)
IMHO: Your slowness is too slow, and your quickness is too quick. Lessen both those extremes just a bit. Also, you skipped the part of the toccata where you dance around with some fancy diminished Bb-Db-E-G arpeggio work. That part's not nearly as hard as it looks; it's all a pattern. Better to play it slowly and correctly than to leave it out.
Did you learn this from an arrangement? You may need to study it again. For the most part a good start. It is a bit rushed. Need to work on articulation in you left hand, especially when playing octaves with the right. Also, look at, or ask someone about Baroque Ornamintations.
I liked it, but the registration was a little too reedy throughout the whole thing. Might not have been, hard to tell through compressed as hell audio. Probably sounded excellent in person.
Nice - don't be discouraged by those who are giving you negative comments, most of them probably can't even read music or wouldn't know how to turn on the Organ yet they like to be so critical. It was very nice. Keep practicing and Serving the Lord, the greatest reward is what you feel inside and that is all that really counts. 5 Stars !
"The Man who walks with GOD - always gets to his destination".
Very good interpritation. Just the way I used to play it at El Centro First UMC. I always seemed to not be able to hold it together if I attempted the full version. Good job.
all of these Classical music police...probably a bunch of cant-hack-its who are jealous...I Have been teaching music for nearly 15 years and thought it was very nice
You did a fine job!! Play it as YOU like it. Give it your very personal interpretation. Finally someone who goes beyond miniscule articulations. Make it new, make it modern, and do provoke.
Insulting for the piece... No respect of the tempo, the spirit. This is not jazz piano.... thats a pipe organ... Sloppy links, clashing rythms. You dont even look at the scores, while you should...
but like what the other people say, kinda to fast. bc when it WAS too fast, u was really sloppy. If you want to play it that fast, u have to sticato all the notes.
Awful timing. Too fast, too slow. I can't imagine you had any musical emotion while you were playing this .

Not a great performance, but the comments suggesting that Bach should be played slow are
way off base.
1)This is a Toccata, a type of piece which is meant to show off manual dexterity (Toccare=to touch).
2) Bach would not have had access to massive modern electric organs, rather he would have used the power of choir-boys to run the organs.
3) More Manuals equals less speed on a mechanical organ, see 1).

5. Un monte di note sbagliate. E pretende di correre.
6. Legatissimo, da vomito.
Insomma, una m***a.

that is quite diabolical i been playing pipe organ for 15 years and taught by a great teacher if i played like that he would hit me one lol

How different... I'm not going to be down right rude like most have been, but I will say that you certainly have an artistic vision, you just need a little help executing it, and correct a few notes, add the missing section, get rid of using the crescendo pedal, and change manuals in a few places... well that about changes the entire thing-sorry

This is just the worst recording of the song I've ever heard. I want to go throw up. He is butchering Bach.

record????
claviergoren 4 years ago 2
Well, he plays it better than I and please could you post one of your recordings, would love to listen.
Thanks

Thats' a good idea. How about the Prelude
and Fugue in B Minor(BWV 544)? This is one of
my favorite compositions. I know the meaning
of hard work. With proper instruction, most
people, including this young man, can play well.
He simply needs the care of a patient teacher. The Toccata(BWV 565) has a pretty bad reputation,
because it is usually played in a sloppy manner.
I am convinced that he can do much better. You
know that also.
claviergoren 4 years ago 3
Well OK then, I agree. As for the BWV 544! will now have to look through my collection and see if I have it, thanks, will get round to it. Still a nice piece of music this, and another fave is Widor 5th Symphony opus 42 No-1 Toccata, now that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand more than a Pink Floyd gig! Say in Earls Court 1994
Thanks for your reply

Whats with adding that extra note on the 64th's at the beginning?
Bachlives2 4 years ago
Sounds more like "Sloppy improv on Bach's Toccata in D Minor, skipping all the hard parts." By the way, where's the Fugue? (I haven't read all 56 comments)

Try hitting the right notes before you speed up :)

Get thee to an organ teacher, fast!
tuttiorgan 4 years ago
Much too fast - at that speed you were forced to leave parts out. If correctly registered there's no need for the crescendo pedal.

Exelente, me quede por escuchar la fuga, de todos modos gracias maestro

WOW!Take it easy,man!Not so fast!Slow it.

If I only could play like this I would be very happy , keep playing man , its great!
Benji1948 4 years ago
IMHO: Your slowness is too slow, and your quickness is too quick. Lessen both those extremes just a bit. Also, you skipped the part of the toccata where you dance around with some fancy diminished Bb-Db-E-G arpeggio work. That part's not nearly as hard as it looks; it's all a pattern. Better to play it slowly and correctly than to leave it out.

also find it strange that you miss out the most demanding parts of the piece
joeyboi87 4 years ago
not the best playing ive heard
joeyboi87 4 years ago
Did you learn this from an arrangement? You may need to study it again. For the most part a good start. It is a bit rushed. Need to work on articulation in you left hand, especially when playing octaves with the right. Also, look at, or ask someone about Baroque Ornamintations.

imagine this as a heavymetal song lmao!! good job don't worry about what other people say ur the one playin it not them
JR0dz 4 years ago
I liked it, but the registration was a little too reedy throughout the whole thing. Might not have been, hard to tell through compressed as hell audio. Probably sounded excellent in person.

An admirable job, Thanks for sharing.
I can't believe how many "armchair musicians" there are on YT. Ignore them.

very poor technique. keep practising.
redmartinbell 4 years ago
Nice - don't be discouraged by those who are giving you negative comments, most of them probably can't even read music or wouldn't know how to turn on the Organ yet they like to be so critical. It was very nice. Keep practicing and Serving the Lord, the greatest reward is what you feel inside and that is all that really counts. 5 Stars !

Very good interpritation. Just the way I used to play it at El Centro First UMC. I always seemed to not be able to hold it together if I attempted the full version. Good job.

all of these Classical music police...probably a bunch of cant-hack-its who are jealous...I Have been teaching music for nearly 15 years and thought it was very nice
jtfraijo 4 years ago
still needs work. your timing was inconsistent and the note articulation wasn't good.
ta4586 4 years ago
You did a fine job!! Play it as YOU like it. Give it your very personal interpretation. Finally someone who goes beyond miniscule articulations. Make it new, make it modern, and do provoke.
I love the crescendo.
wallace2621 4 years ago
I hate it. It ruined the piece
Sepanto 4 years ago
ruined... classical music ruined.
andrewchin11 4 years ago
Insulting for the piece... No respect of the tempo, the spirit. This is not jazz piano.... thats a pipe organ... Sloppy links, clashing rythms. You dont even look at the scores, while you should...

I don't like it...

That was far too fast and so you missed half the notes out. A poor attempt. Slow it down.

Agreed, and I don't even play....yet. :D
Somuchtosay2006 4 years ago
agreed. only plays certain measures with one hand when it should be octaves with two. WTF
eleventytwelfthprez 4 years ago
you were able to play it fast!
but like what the other people say, kinda to fast. bc when it WAS too fast, u was really sloppy. If you want to play it that fast, u have to sticato all the notes.
