  • There are fisheries for Humboldt squid mostly in Mexico and northern Peru. Commercially, they have been caught to serve Europe, Russia, China, Japan, South East Asia and increasingly North and South American markets.

  • fantastic under water view..can i eat this kind of squid?

  • Be sure to see the new documentary coming out by GreenPeace that showcases MBARI scientists and how they experiment with humbolt squid.

  • The children of Cthulhu are beautiful.

  • Why do all the comment pages on animal/nature videos fill with so many damn arguments about God & evolution? This isn't a religious blog people...

  • lol...

  • they do have 1 bone and they also have a beak

  • @1313owner Actually, that is not a "bone" so to speak, as squid are shellfish. The evolutionary ancestors of squid actually had shells, similar to modern day Nautilus. Over the course of evolution, squid grew more reliable on their speed and ink. So now, squid carry a shell inside their bodies, it shares a similar purpose, but is not a "bone". :)

  • @tommystockley well i new everything u just told me except that it was a shell thanks anyway

  • spooky

  • Very impressive animals...

  • yey bloopers :D

  • anyone know how deep this is?

  • i dont want to dive with these. they looks good but a big humbolt can grab you and put you to the deep. and they very strong. a big one is about 2 -3 m long.

  • Humbolt squid are really aggressive. I watched a National Geographic film about the Giant Squid, and it featured a dive with Humbolts, and the diver got attacked and bitten by a Humbolt when he was in his diving cage (it had a large hole in it, which allowed him to move in and out and also allowed the squid in).

  • those squid are evil

  • The only evil animal is man.

    And chimpanzees.

    And freshwater sponges.

  • ok, chimpanzees and humans i can understand, sponges, not so much

  • @RasecVonWizzlbang dolphins can be pretty evil too, with the raping and the murder, etc etc

  • Hey! Starlet swam by!

  • It's so graceful. Like a dance.

  • theres squidword

  • i think its squidward

  • i love it

  • dont even worry about the religion debates... in a few million years the human race will have no answer to their own species evolution mwhaha religons will be destroyed, or should i say, disprooved forever. anyway cool squids yeh?

  • so fast?

  • lmao

  • Haha! douglas, you so funny!!!!

  • This could actually be a good screensaver!!

    Cool video nevertheless..

  • i loooooooove the ocean!!!!!! congratulations for the video!!!

  • I happen to be an oceanic scientist who specializes in undersea macro and microbiolgogy, and I would like to offer some insight and clarification as to exactly what you are seeing here..........this is a humbolt squid in Monterey bay.

  • hi forrest, are you an oceanic scientist??i love the ocean can we be friends??thanks

  • let's hunt for the squids

  • those things are literaly crazy i have watched animal plantet the will kill u without even haveing a perpose. they r the only animal i know of that attacks for no reason

  • damn it, really? wow

  • very nice! :D

  • these things have been know to kill, and in mexico they are one of the biggest killers of fisherman

  • Indeed, there are highly underestimated. Then again, if you treat them like sharks (just chill out and dont provoke them) you should be able to interact with them, as they have been known to be fairly intelligent

  • nerd alert!

  • no, intelligence alert.

Since when was being educated considered a bad thing?

  • intersesting

  • Lame fish

  • I did not know there were humboldt squid in the Monterey Bay. I'm never going swimming out here again. If it's not the great whites, it's something else... GAA!

  • Lol, wear a tshirt that says, "I am NOT tasty!"

cool video, wish there was something to compair the scale too.

  • I think they come out at night to feed..during the day, they stay in really deep water....

  • I always got the impression the liked warmer waters. You learn new stuff everyday, and if you don't you're not paying attention.

  • Are you kidding? Monterey Bay has more "Diablos Rojo", or Humbolt squid per capita than just about any other body of water in the entire bloody world - and I DO mean bloody~! I've done a lot of shark diving off the coasts of SC, NC, Florida, Gulf of Mex, & Cal. - Most of the divers that I've run into would much rather swim among sharks than Humbolts. They really ARE red devils~!

  • Yeah, that makes sense.

  • why what happens to them?

  • They can be up to about 4 or 5 feet long, and are extremely aggressive. They are also highly intelligent (unknown HOW intelligent), and hunt in packs.

  • it's cool

  • A gulper eel on the title.

  • Wow, I read that and lost 13 iq points.. thank you

  • haha soo true xD

  • that's neeeeaaaattt..

makes me want to visit the

    monterey bay aquarium again

    i loved it there :DD

  • Excellent squid video! I love underwater sequences of wildlife, makes me want to go do more scuba diving.

Side Note: Why are religious crackpots ranting about a squid video? Thumbing down comments that having NOTHING to do with squid or sealife, hopefully they'll drop off the list over time.

  • uhh..could you not post these things on these kinds of vids? thanks.

  • Aren't these called the "Devil squid" I hear they attack humans too.

  • they are really small. if they attack humans it is no harm

  • i heard the opposite. i heard that they could kill you if they attacked you.

  • they can easily kill you if they attack you

they can and have pulled people like 50 meters under the water in like a couple seconds giving them severe splits and they are amazingly aggressive animals

not much is known about the humbodt squid though

  • Not true. As a predator, they are not to be underestimated. If someone told me Humboldts are in the immediate area, I'd stay out of the water!

  • that has absolutely nothing to do with god that has everything to do with the fact that people have free will and they can do as they please god isn't the one killing people...people are killing people and Paris Hilton sleeps with everyone she can in order to make money (which for the life of me i cant see why anyone would sleep with her *shudder shudder*)

  • if there is God than God created gay men. Everything in life is all about balance. Gay men do not create life so therefore there won't be overpopulation leading to a global food crisis.

  • so the food crisis now is proof that there is no god around?

  • God didn't create life. It's water. Water is the basis of all life from single celled organisms to mammals. There's life on earth because of our oceans. So do say God created life on earth.

  • i do say God created life on earth and thats what i believe you dont have to believe it if you dont want to but dont try to prove me wrong ok? lol ur funny

  • If I'm not mistaken, scientists tend to look for the elusive giant squid where Humbolt squid are found.

  • oooh...so intriguing...want to research more...or just watch d vid..hehe

  • That's so cool.. for some reason tho i thought squids could only swim in one direction becasue of the jet propulsion thing.. but i see them swimming both forward and backwards.. anyone know anythign bout that? (I heard the backwards thing a long time ago, so its possible that's what we thougth years ago but now discovered they can swim forwards too..?)

  • well the "exhaust jet" is close to its mouth/beak so it would need to be able to go in that direction to catch its prey. its main form of "short range" propulsion are the fins distal to its mouth. it uses the two longest tentacles to harpoon and grab its prey. the exhaust jet is mainly used for a low energy movement across large distances.

  • How the hell do they move through the water so fast? They hardly flap their fins (or whatever they are) at all.

  • Squid and octopi do not use "fins" for propulsion at all, instead they have siphons (basically jet propulsion). Thay are able to reach much faster speeds than shown in this video.

  • Damn. These things are pretty insane.

  • @CX118 yup but squid do use there fins for stability...octopi have no fins at all and use only the bivalve for jet propulsion and legs for bottom walking....gr8 piece of film ...

  • They have water "jets " on their sides that propel them throught the water. The fins are basically for stability.

  • its amazing how they use their tentacle to snatch the fish. man i want one of those

  • That is really neat. I haven't seen something like this in a long time. That's so much for this video.
