Well, I have the CD in my computer and would really like to post Nina's wonderful slow version of "The House of the Rising Sun", but I'm clueless as to how to proceed. Please give me step by step instructions.
@mredth I don't know but the way to put a cd on you tube should be on google. You might need something to turn it into a digital signal. If you have a mac there is something at the apple website for that. Get the more expensive one because the cheap one is said to be crappy. There should be plenty of programs for the same thing if you have a PC (Windows.)
I found it. It's on a CD I have, but i used to have the albumn. i guess I threw it away when I bought the CD, though I don't know why, I'm such a fan! It on the CD " Nina at the Village Gate" recorded by EMI in 1961. It's now out in CD format by Roulette Jazz and is labled CDP7950582. I'm going to try to post it, but I don't know what I'm doing! I'll just stick the CD in the computer and see what happens.
No. I don't know how. It's on a 33 1/3 record, which I've now misplaced. i just searched repeatedly through my collection and can't find it. I'm going to go to best buy and see if I can find it on a CD. Now I'm obsessed. I can't imagine what happened to the record. I've always kept everything in the same place! If I'm lucky enough to find it on CD, I'll need coaching on how to upload it.
how do you find this version of the song from nina simone its the only place i can listen to it but would love to download it if anyone has any ideas would be great ...
I've loved Nina Simone since I first heard her back in 1959. I played Nina Simone at Town Hall over and over and over till it was worn out. There's a slow version of House of the Rising Sun that I like even better than this one. It was recorded live in 1961 at The Village Gate in NYC . I'll have to figure out how to upload it onto UTube..
@mredth pls,pls upload the song!!! I used to have a version of her singing this song, slower than this, but it's long lost and I haven't been able to find it anywhere!!!! HELP!!!
I never saw this clip before. She's in her prime here. I saw her at the Bitter End, and later many times when she headlined in theaters. One of the most memorable was at Avery Fisher Hall, the night Black Gold was recorded.
The vocal performance would be out of this world all by itself, but then she's playing piano at the same time?? God Nina Simone was amazing. And I haven't heard "Go to Hell" in forever, I LOVE that song.
come on! is this BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think the beat is a bit fast. It's like she's reading the words instead of putting her spin/personality in it. I guess this is just blues? I think this song should be very sad not upbeat.
Nina Simone was a total magician. Ballsy and brassy, at the same time sweet and tender, depending on which day you found her in her music. Said it all the way it needed to be said. RIP, dear lady!
Am I the only one who noticed the "jerk/spasm" thing that Nina has right after she delivers the lyric, "You know damn well.." Hmmm....watch it again ifyou didn't see it...
Nonetheless, NINA SIMONE is a goddess. She is beautiful in every way.
@YoungGiftedandBlack : She suffered from schizoprenia, when i watch her alot i think sometimes it hits her. or its just a personal thing which if you watch she does alot in live performances, just makes me love her more than what i do :)
Hi, you know, I'm from Mexico and it's really hard to get some Nina's music here, but the first time I ever saw Nina I felt in love with her music, IT'S AMAZING. I love black culture and what I love the most is the music they've created especially Nina's.
im pretty sure the first recorded version, or at least the first widely known recorded version of this song was in the late 30s by a sixteen year old girl, georgia turner, collected by alan lomax for his southern folk recordings and titled "rising sun blues." thats the version that can be traced back to most popular versions, the animals, dylan, van ronk, simone, leadbelly etc. it is originally sung from a woman's viewpoint most likely in reference to a brothel.
The Rising Sun was a house of detention in N.O., not a house of prostitution as is widely believed. It was for men, so when a woman sings 'girl' it doesn't quite fit. Just a historical note, definitely not a criticism of Nina, my inspiration.
I actually saw a documentary about the House of the Rising Sun it had said it was actually a house of prostitution in the French Quarter, they went inside and everything...but I don't remember the actual title of the documentary
I should check my facts before posting. According to Dave Van Ronk, who performed and arranged this old song before Dylan or The Animals had heard it, the Orleans Parish women's prison has an imposing stone doorway with a rising sun carved on the lintel. Who knows?
This was the very first time i saw Nina, and fell in love with her. I saw her many times after this and got to see her last concert she did here in the states. Miss u Nina RIP my friend.
It's called chanting, probably Indian, Middle Eastern, or African in nature. She was very aware of cultures and it's traditional in many cultures to chant.
Yes - and also, the African American vernacualr music canon calls for extra-vocal sounds (AKA inarticulate interpolated vocalisms) - think James Brown Going "Yeahs, woooop, GET Up, AHK" and stuff like that. Sometimes, you have to just let teh spirit take your voice, and Nina is no stranger to the spirit. :)
there's was talk about a movie of her life so maybe we will find out together... but I know alot of her songs were record during the civil rights movement and that miliant demeanor was very common...in light of the circumstances
She was very angry during the civil rights.. she actually left the united states. I think she gave up her citizenship and took went to France. She lived most of her later life there. There are lots of french songs of hers. If I rememerb, she married a french guy too. I am not 100%.

@mredth @mredth That's interesting, Wikipedia has the song being recorded by Nina in 1962.
This might be a version of the song that wasn't ever played again...
Please convert that to a digital file. I'm sure that someone near you will be willing to help if you simply state your city... share this please!
IF you can't do YOUTUBE, put the audio file up on sound cloud [dot] com and link it here.
With the request that others can make a video (give you credit) and upload it here as well.
