Oh my bad. I meant to write the apostles were eyewitnesses, many who died for their beliefs in Christ. The writers of the 29 books were not eyewitnesses, however many knew the eyewitnesses after Jesus' death and resurrection.
Consider this scenario for a moment: you witness something that happens today. You tell someone about it, they tell someone else about it, and so on for 40 or 50 years. Also assume the majority of these people are uneducated, illiterate and superstitious. Then, in 40 or 50 years time, someone decides to write the event down. How accurate do you think this record would be?

these men and women were clearly sinners. The Bible is unique amongst ancient documents in that it presents its heroes as very "human." David, Solomon, Samuel, Abraham, Sarah, Moses and others are definitely presented as sinners who, in some cases, committed horrible mistakes. You're clearly taking this out of context.
I don't make this assumption. However, you must admit it is a little bit odd that there is NO mention anywhere in the Bible that these men were sinning by having multiple wives. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. If God intended one man and one wife, then this is some pretty MAJOR sin and yet it is never alluded to as a problem whatsoever. I agree, it doesn't automatically mean it is OK, but it's a bit odd that such "sin" is completely overlooked in every instance.
I forgot to mention this earlier. The 10th Commandment You shall not covet your neighbors wife. The bible has recorded events whether it is unusual or not. For example, a women coming across the empty tomb. Women were on a very low rung of the social ladder in first-century Palestine. There are old rabbinical sayings that said, 'Let the words of Law be burned rather than delivered to women' and 'blessed is he whose children are male, but woe to him whose children are female.' Ah yes, the 10 commandments. My favourite issue with morality coming from God. Have you noticed how in the Bible God waits until the 10 commandments to tell people that murder, theft, envy, etc. are all wrong. Do you honestly think that the Jews were wandering around up until then with no idea that theft was wrong? Of course not, morality is a human quality regardless of religion.
Miracles arent a grab-bag of goodies for us to enjoy; rather, God uses miracles in particular points of time for very specific purposes. God doesn't need to prove Himself to us (were on trial, not Him), nor does He need to bless us. When He does bless us, it is entirely out of mercy. The bible tells us God has a purpose for everything. Matthew 10:30 "And even the hairs on our head are numbered"
The whole point is that people who claim to witness miracles never ever claim one that is externally verifiable. Therefore, there is no evidence for them. When there is no evidence for things they usually turn out not to be true.
Do you honestly think God makes all amputees in this world suffer just so he's not too obvious to us about his existence? It is far more likely that miracles are in fact inaccurate observation of naturally occurring phenomena.
So wrong. God(s) do need to prove themselves to us otherwise they don't exist.
If I believe in the god Zeus and claim that he doesn't need to prove himself to us, but that it is evident he exists because when I pray to him I see miracles, you would not consider that an acceptable claim. Yet your claim of the god Yahweh is exactly the same.
God has given us proof that He exist. His Word (both the bible and His Son Jesus) and the prophecy that Jesus the Messiah fulfilled and many others. You have obviously denied these truths and choose to ignore. Only you and God (if He does exist) know if these are the true reasons you deny the gospel. I'm not accusing you of this, but many use these as excuses to continue on in their sins. Unfortunately, they don't understand how freeing it is when you trust in God and give your problems to Him.
It is ironic that you say that. Remember that you are preaching to someone who went through your frame of mind for 3 decades. I never found it freeing. The exact opposite in fact. It was an enormous relief of a burden when I realized that God doesn't exist.

He is arguing for a historically consistent view of marriage. The issue for us with a conservative position is that we maintain the concept with which marriage was originally instituted. The controversial debate is currently around same-sex marriage, but we would equally oppose any other proposed alternative marriage arrangement that might arise in the future.

In the old testament It also said to kill someone who worked on the sabbath and also wearing clothes of mixed fabrics was a sin too, yet people do those two things, but condemn bein gay?

Add to that, the fact that the people who eventually, decades later, wrote down stories about someone called Jesus, believed that he was the Messiah and therefore had a bias and vested interest in making his actions and words appear to match known Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah. Do you get the picture?
This scenario does not have the sort of reliability to which I'm likely to place my trust. Especially when similar stories exist in many other religions.

Jesus was crucified because they thought He was blaspheming God. The Romans saw the messiah as a warrior not a friend of sinners, thieves, or women. Jesus is found in 29 books outside of the bible and they confirm His life and death. These were written by eyewitnesses, not to mention they died for their beliefs. Study how the bible was recorded and copied (ie letter by letter) so there were no errors.

Here are a few of the large books and writers that confirm Jesus' existence. "Antiquities, Cornelius Tacitus, Gaius Suetonius Tranquillas, Pliny the Younger, Julius Africanus, Thallus, Julius Africanus, Clement of Rome, Irenaeus of Lyons, books by the Jews and Gnostics. The Gnostics never denied Jesus' existence. There were people still alive who knew Jesus or the Apostles. Their only alternative was to accept Jesus, but change his message.

Oh my bad. I meant to write the apostles were eyewitnesses, many who died for their beliefs in Christ. The writers of the 29 books were not eyewitnesses, however many knew the eyewitnesses after Jesus' death and resurrection.

Also assume the majority of these people are uneducated, illiterate and superstitious. Then, in 40 or 50 years time, someone decides to write the event down. How accurate do you think this record would be?

Everything we see on this earth serves a purpose, there is too much design here to ignore it and to understand that it all happened on accident. That doesn't make them accurate. The fact is no one knows who actually wrote many of the books of the Bible. If you still think men called Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John witnessed Jesus' life and then wrote it down, you are way off mark. That simply did not happen.
Illiteracy was also much more rampant in those days. So was superstition (no knowledge of micro organisms etc.).
I'm afraid that what is plain as day to you is completely incorrect to me.

Cont: Women's testimony was regarded as so worthless that they weren't even allowed to serve as legal witnesses in a Jewish court of Law. Compare this to any other ancient book, religious book for that matter, the humility wouldn't be shared. The fact that women are the first witnesses to the empty tomb is most plausibly explained by the reality that -- like it or not -- they were the discoverers of the empty tomb!

these men and women were clearly sinners. The Bible is unique amongst ancient documents in that it presents its heroes as very "human." David, Solomon, Samuel, Abraham, Sarah, Moses and others are definitely presented as sinners who, in some cases, committed horrible mistakes. You're clearly taking this out of context.

I don't make this assumption. However, you must admit it is a little bit odd that there is NO mention anywhere in the Bible that these men were sinning by having multiple wives. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. If God intended one man and one wife, then this is some pretty MAJOR sin and yet it is never alluded to as a problem whatsoever. I agree, it doesn't automatically mean it is OK, but it's a bit odd that such "sin" is completely overlooked in every instance.

I forgot to mention this earlier. The 10th Commandment You shall not covet your neighbors wife. The bible has recorded events whether it is unusual or not. For example, a women coming across the empty tomb. Women were on a very low rung of the social ladder in first-century Palestine. There are old rabbinical sayings that said, 'Let the words of Law be burned rather than delivered to women' and 'blessed is he whose children are male, but woe to him whose children are female.' Miracles arent a grab-bag of goodies for us to enjoy; rather, God uses miracles in particular points of time for very specific purposes. God doesn't need to prove Himself to us (were on trial, not Him), nor does He need to bless us. When He does bless us, it is entirely out of mercy. The bible tells us God has a purpose for everything. Matthew 10:30 "And even the hairs on our head are numbered"

The whole point is that people who claim to witness miracles never ever claim one that is externally verifiable. Therefore, there is no evidence for them. When there is no evidence for things they usually turn out not to be true.
Do you honestly think God makes all amputees in this world suffer just so he's not too obvious to us about his existence? It is far more likely that miracles are in fact inaccurate observation of naturally occurring phenomena.

God has given us proof that He exist. His Word (both the bible and His Son Jesus) and the prophecy that Jesus the Messiah fulfilled and many others. You have obviously denied these truths and choose to ignore. Only you and God (if He does exist) know if these are the true reasons you deny the gospel. I'm not accusing you of this, but many use these as excuses to continue on in their sins. Unfortunately, they don't understand how freeing it is when you trust in God and give your problems to Him.
