I also had an uncle, Clint that was captured around the town of St. Preyel in France. Wound up in Stalag 17b. At the time of his liberation was so emaciated he also spent quite some time at a armt hospital in Florida. Eventually lost a leg from untreated shrapnal wound that became cancerous. Died from same in 1977. I have his diary from his time in 17b. Very sketchy and demonstates what treating people terribly will reduce a man to.
My Uncle Art was a BAR man in the US Army Infantry. He was captured in Italy and spent several months in a German POW camp. He lived on things like onion peel soup or grass soup. He was so emaciated when he was liberated that he ended up spending months at an Army hospital in Florida being fed before he was allowed to return home. Poor guy died of stomach canver in 1966, don't know if it was related to what he went through in WW2.
very interrested pictures of the prisoners life after the liberation, walking, waiting during weeks or months, my grand father was one of them. We can talk about liberation too for german prisoners: just have a look on the tall guy on 2:27! Very instructive choice of pictures.
