As for the commentator, don't be too hard on him. He is a typical westerner who is trying very hard to understand the sentiments of the Chinese on the Olympics, which ranges from utter indifference to extreme enthusiasm like the Tattoo man. It would be too much to ask a westerner to explain China to westerners without going back to western notions or ideologies.

As for the practical side of the Olympics, the Billions spent is well worth it in my opinion. BeiJing becomes a more modern city for one. Lenovo engineers got the experience dealing with large computer system management expereince it would not otherewise get. The whole society got a good training in large scale organization of social events. RFID technology got a big boost, and China may now be in advanced league in this area as the most advanced countries .. the list goes on ...
