Thanks as always! There are apparently two Richter recordings of the Grand Sonata, one from 1954 (this) and another from two or three years later. Any recommendation as to which to search out? Must admit the only recording I have is Shura Cherkassky's, 1982 live in San Francisco, which I happen to like a lot.
I remember this piece! I borrowed this particular LP from the local library during my sturm und drang years. Brings back bittersweet memories of the heartaches and confusion of a young searching soul... Am I being pathetic again???. Someone put the wine bottle away...
@alkan71 Your dark quarter comment (with wine) strikes a chord with me. Last night I finished a bottle of extra-dry California sparkling wine whilst reading Hajo Holborn's essay on Otto von Bismarck's Sturm-und-Drang years from which Otto emerged from his own mad-Junker years with the benefit of belief in a higher power as a method of obtaining relief from his own overpowering ego. Bismarck found, as did Schleiermacher, that the use of prayer lies in submission to a stronger power.

Richter never fails to communicate what the composer wrote.

But where is the first part of this supreme sonata?

I didn't want to cut movements...

It shouldn't be that hard to upload it in its entirety... Actually, someone has already done so, but the sound is ATROCIOUS!

Do it yourself then? Don't always wait for others to do something ...

what heart-wrenching agony! Brilliant and an underrated sonata by a poetic genius.
