I sang this on a course with Bob Chilcott in 2003 and have never forgotten it. So haunting and beautiful. He needs to do a choral arrangement of Billy Joel's 'Goodnight My Angel' STAT!!
@71259mark: Thanks for your kind comment. This song is the encore piece of that concert. We got very tight schedule to work with Bob Chilcott at that time because he is guest conductor and just came to Taiwan in one week before the concert, so we only rehearsal two or three times of this beautiful song.....
Tim, I Loved your solo in this video!! You have a nice warm voice, you did an awesome job on it! What a thrill it must be to be a part of the Taipei Chamber Singers!!
The BEST of all interpretations I've seen on YouTube. Just wish they had held out the phrase 'but you can make decisions too' near the end just a bit longer. Just for impact. That aside, wonderful emotion and arrangement. All the subleties without overdoing it. Great!
Spectacular performance! It's always interesting to see how well foreign groups do with english compared to how badly we tend to butcher other languages. Thanks for posting!
@kuangchien I don't think memorization gets in the way of interpretation. That's something you hash out in rehearsal. I think the interpretation was nicely done. Anything more would have sounded overdone and contrived.
I don't care how much you like a perfectly blended sound, a person should never engage in unhealthy vocal habits to achieve a blend, especially soloists. The whole idea of a soloist is to rise from the texture, not to fall perfectly in line with the chorus. If it did, the arranger (who is actually the conductor) would have put it as a choral part. Bob Chilcott knows exactly what he is doing, the goal of a chorus is not to blend but to celebrate the individuality of us all in group form.
Too many choral conductors are not capable soloists themselves, don't know the voice as well as they should, and therefore require the singers to do vocal gymnastics to acheive the blend they want. Blend is a product of the voices selected for the ensemble plus rigourous attention to choral diction. A voice is too bright? Pick a different voice. Bravo for the choir's english diction. How many english speaking choirs would do that well in a Chinese dialect?
This is a nice choral arrangement by Bob Chilcott. This Taipei group needs to work on unified entrances. What I heard was sloppy. They also need to sell the melancholy uncertainty and vulnerability that's at the core of this song better.
this is certainly one of the most beautiful renditons of one of Billy Joel's best songs..awesome talent in the voices, but also a superb conductor in Bob Chilcott...
Bob Chilcott is amazing. I've never heard an asian choir so... on point and balanced.
and about that comment... I seriously haven't heard an asian choir worth listening to if they weren't based out of the USA. if anyone has proof opposing my opinion, I'm open to whatever you want to tell me.
How cool is it that Billy Joel composed this song in the late 80's and 20 years later it is being sung today by Asian college students being directed by a 60-year old Englishman? Nice job, choir/director; I think it's Kirby Shaw's arr., pretty much straight from the chord voicings in Billy's original piano accompaniment.
Nope, it's Bob Chilcott's arrangement --the one he made while he was with the King's Singers. If you ever have occasion to hear the King's Singers recording, I highly suggest you take it. Of course, they do it in the org. key (C), as opposed to this version (D). The King's Singers takes Billy Joel's music to another level. AND, even better is there "Lullabye (Goodnight, my Angel)" =) -APB
i've meet bob chilcott i'm doing a performance with the cbso and other schools of one of his songs it called 'Butterfly's Son it's never been heard before by the public

There's always room for improvement, but this is well done.

woah
i think if they got the song memorized the interpretation of the song would rise a whole new level
and the tenor's solo tone was so bright
he should of swallowed his sound a bit in order for a better blend with the background
the women were beautifully blended and the dynamic contransts were awesome though

It's the encore piece of this concert, we don't have too much time to rehearsal, that'w why we can't memorized:)

What makes you think it's a soloist's job to blend in with accompaniment? I think it's a personal artistic choice, and I tend to agree with him.

@bytherulebook the whole point of a solo is to stick out... his tone was already totally nasal, not sure how swallowing it would be better...
kiwisagogo 2 years ago
A soloist is not supposed to be blend into the accompaniment. He ihas to stand out or else no one can hear him.
Hisname22 1 year ago
@bytherulebook I would never "swallow" a sound. I might connect it or make more space etc... and dig a little bit deeper on high notes.
davidmoye 1 year ago
@bytherulebook I performed this piece once, and from what I remember the solo is intended for baritone. That may explain why the tone may not "fit."
DisgruntledGoat111 1 year ago
in my opinion the whole tenor solo sucks... this has not the intention, the song is meant to have...
