Quite honestly if given the choice between dying instantly in a crash, or weeks later from the prolonged suffering of radiation sickness, than I'll take the crash.
In the novel Dwight and Moria don't t see the race they instead, go on a fishing trip in the mountains while the race is going on. They only hear about Peter's victory in the motor race, in their hotel
, whilst they are listening to the evening news on the radio.
Wikipedia confirms it was filmed at Riverside Raceway with cars including a Jaguar XK150, a Jaguar D-Type, a Porsche 356, a Mercedes-Benz gullwing, and a Corvette. (Sorry for the thumbs down rating - hit it by accident - will correct later.)
It looks too hot to have been filmed in Melbourne and in the novel race takes place in mid winter. Mind judging by what Ava Gardner famously said about her time while filming in Melbourne being back in California must have been like heaven.
@turner681 1, The film was made in and on the outskirts of Melbourne (Berwick) 2. What Ava was alledged to have said about Melbourne is just a wives tale thats become folklore......
White Ferrari number 5 wins the race... Anyone see a resemblance to Speed Racer (which is released later, I get that), or is that just me?

God i really wanna see this film, the book was amazing. Saw the trailer for the remake but it looks kinda lame

@ichithekiller85 The remake wasn't as good as this movie. It was good but a bit too loud. Still worthwhile. The book was fantastic!

I know they didn't think of it at the time, but they lunched some pretty valuable cars. I haven't seen this since I was a kid.

I think George Miller got the idea for Mad Max and Road warrior from this movie.

A classic motor racing film clip.
I'm pretty sure that it was actually filmed at Riverside in California. At 2.05 you see the old Riverside esses.
You really do wonder if all the drivers were OK.
