When they put on performances of this now, do they still use the appalling stereotypes of "Indians" saying "ugga-wugga" and stuff like that? How do they get around it?
I watched this all the time as a kid... But this is the first time that I realized the set was supposed to be differentiating the Lost Boys living underground and the above-ground scenery. Strangeness.
I love "Distant Melody." It shows how Peter, though he outwardly is glad he's a little boy and doesn't have a mother to tell him what to do, is inwardly empty and longs for the time when his mother comforted him. It's almost heartbreaking.
For those who do not know, Mary Martin's son grew up and lived in a Neverland called Dallas. His role as J. R. Ewing made him more famous than playing Capt. Nelson of I dream of Jennie.
"You're soo strange. "There's something she wants to be to me but it's not my mother." Sad, for there's no such term as "girlfriend" in the language of Neverland.
So I thought the reasoning of the lost boys was that they didn't want to grow up, yet Peter is smoking a pipe, reading the paper, and pretending to be old.
It's a laugh for children to play that they're adults. It's the prospect of becoming one for real, and never going back, that scares them into going to Neverland.
That no hands pole slide got me in so much trouble when I was little. The first week of kindergarten I got stuck to a pole and it took 3 monitors to get my legs untangled.
my dance company had put on peter pan a few years ago and one of the numbers was the "ugg-a-wah" and i never knew where the song was from...now i do :)
omg this is so EPIC. i remembered loving that pole when i was a kid because everyone dancing/slid down on it and it was so magical. i love this version so much. memories. !!!!
I really wanna play peter...but the woman directing at my school typecasts like no other. So since I'm the only girl auditioning who's not white, the best part I could get would be tiger lily. she's still awesome though!
mary martin died exactly a month after i was born=[...it was actually my due date...this is my fav. EVERYTHING!!! movie [all of 'em] book musical the whole bit. it has been my dream since i was like 5 to play peter pan in some big production =] sometimes i think it was some sort of sign, im supposed to do something big like this.
@wisgliebau so true. but then again it is a magic land. lol!
