  • Robert Millar - The Flying Scotsman, never forgotten back in Scotland. Hope he's doing well and is in a good place mentally.

  • Robert has given a lot to cycling and how many Scots came closer to great rewards, in the past very few and less now. His spirit as a grand tour rider is an example to follow.

Roberto ha dato molto al ciclismo e quante scozzese arrivò più vicino a grandi premi, pochi in passato e ora di meno. Il suo spirito come un corridore nei grandi giri a tappa è un esempio da seguire.

  • I love Fignon

  • i love vhs .

  • Robert millar what a great climber i miss those days

  • I remember those Z jerseys, they were cool

  • Great footage of some classic riders. It reminds me of my own cycling days. Used to regularly tape every tour, unfortunately didnt keep the tapes. Thanks for the footage.

  • videocassettes sucks

  • @rowenj Well there weren't many dvds around in 1989!

  • is his son david millar?

  • @dingoken No, they are not related.

  • @Matteomjb

    OK thx

  • Drew, try and find one person in the professional cycling world who has proof or reason to believe Lemond took anything during his career and then we can move on to asking Greg to then prove himself. You may find yourself searching in vain for a very long time, unlike another certain American Tour winner who famously doesn't get along with Lemond,.

  • Greg LeMond's average speed in the time trial, 54.545 km/h, was the fastest in Tour de France stage history; since then, only the 1994 prologue has been faster.[1

On a boat anchor with aero bars? What proof does he have that he was clean? Many others were doping at this time. Testing was very easy to beat back then.

Clearly he could have been using performance enhancing substances. Greg should be asked to prove that he did not dope during his three tours.

  • Would the person who posted this kindly post a longer segement - I remember shouting Millar on 20 years ago in Co. Kildare.. and then seeing him in the Nissan Classic.

    A truly great rider.

  • @TheIrish39 dood!!! I was also there 20 years ago in Kildare....been that I'm from newbridge town. great days of cycling.

  • they look like they are pushing really heavy gears somehow

  • I TOTALLY AGREE. WITHOUT RADIO.

  • In my opinion, while the 1989 Tour is the greatest of all-time - this stage is one of the most underrated. What drama in the race!

  • @wac01a yes for sure

  • 2-..for the stage in exchange of the help for the overall class. After the stage Mottet was 3rd, 57 after Fignon; Delgado 4th +2:53; and Millar 8th +6:42. Delgado here is not fighting for the stage, in the last meters he keep the wheel and keep his word, that allways did. (Question: what told Millar about Vuelta´85? Its the 2nd time I read here someone talks about "cheat", Delgado risk downhill in the fog and Millar didn´t follow him. That was all that happened. Delgado was brave, not cheat)

  • 1-Thanks (again) for the video, Matteo. But there´s an error: this isn´t a battle at all. Delgado had lost 7´ the first 2 days of that Tour and he was determinated to recover that time. He makes second in the first ITT, 24 after Lemond. He took another 29 in the first pirynees stage, and this was the second one. Delgado is fighting for the overall classification and the agreement with Millar and Mottet, that couldn´t follow them to the end, was that both Delgado and Mottet won´t fight...

  • He was considered cheating because the team cars reported Millar punctured at the bottom of the hill. The unofficial rule in cycling is you don't attack when a rival crashes or puntures. They took an advantage of confusion where Millar didn't know that Delgado was in a break and gaining time. Ride fair and take your opponent on face to face not by trickery, there is no skill in that.

  • I know that Delgado was going for time rather than the stage. They were both battling, Delgado for time, Millar for the stage. Delgado was going so hard that it was still very difficult for Millar to win. Millar had been on the attack, in the front, since the start of the stage amd was very tired. He was dropped in the last 2km but came back to win. As for the 85 Vuelta, Delgado didn't cheat, but the Spanish teams and directors did by all ganging up to ensure that a gringo didn't win.

  • Robert Millar is a British sporting legend ...so can expect a serious BBC Sport "documentary" "soon" (I've only been waiting 25 years)...... aye right! they'd prob do a Cliff Richard contribution to British tennis first.

  • A small amount of revenge for the stolen vuelta in 85. Loved Delgado, but what a cheat!

  • And the 86 Vuelta - Alvaro Pino

  • Well, yea you had Robert Millar, and now you have David Millar. Are they related? David Millar sure has been quiet lately. He was red hot before he was found guilty of blood doping.

  • No they are not related. David Millar was showing good form in the Dauphine last week. Watch him go in the Tour.

  • GREAT STAGE!

  • Actually that should be an OBE.

  • Robert Millar was an inspiration to me. The way he could accelerate up mountains was incredible. He finished fourth in one Tour de France. It has to be the toughest sporting event on the planet. Its a disgrace why Millar has never received an MBE as he is Britains greatest cyclist.

  • @Darrenov In the 1984 Sports personality of the year (BBC) awards He was not even mentioned...a total disgrace

  • Kewlios

  • shame that nobody carried in the UK what Millar,Roche,Kelly and others left of in cyling...

  • I remember that this wonderful stage saw Millar going over the 3 previuos Cols first(Tourmalet,Aspin,Peyresourd)prior to the final ascent-which saw him claw back twice to an angered Perico who threw a water bottle at a spectator who shouted in his ear at the bottom of the climb, and stamped away from Millar & Mottet. This was a truely remarkable stage in the way that Millar dug deeper than his previuos stage wins (83, 84)for his truely best ever TDF stage win.

  • Robert Millar- what a rider!

Despite what has been written about him in the press (and let's face it what he does with his life is up to him) he will always be one of my heroes. Inspired me to pick up a bike and for that I will always be thankful.

  • memorable perico, lo unico que hizo millar fue chupar rueda. Perico se mereció la etapa y el tour. Otro de los tours que perico debió ganar.

  • Fantastic rider. And that's coming from an Englishman!

    Where is he now?

  • Robert Millar was/is my hero. Just rode up Superbagneres on my 50th birthday remembering his epic victory over Delgado all the way up. Wherever you are Robert, thanks for the inspiration

  • Brilliant athlete.

  • Fantástico Pericoo!!!!

  • Formidable Rob. You influenced thousands. I hope your content where ever you are.

  • Millar was a true great. Thanks for posting this. Probably the best scot athelete ever, and sad he did not get the recognition he really did deserve.

    Thanks for posting

  • Fabulous!

  • Genius. Thanks for posting this. Great rider who never had the recognition he deserved and more than his fair share of bad luck, remember the stage where he went/was sent (delete as appropriate) the wrong way and lost it to Massimo Ghirotto, who would never have won had Millar been alongside and when he was 'stitched up' whilst leading the Tour of Spain.

  • its a great video this thnx for posting it!!, robert millar fantastic rider

  • Millar was the true climber here, he should've be puttin' the pressure on perico.

  • Millar had been away for the whole stage and had lead all the way up the 3 previous climbs!

  • What an awesome Tour '89 was! Thanks for posting this bit of classic cycling history.

  • magic Matt. I remember Robert winning the Kellogs tour that year, saw him fly past Kelly and Earley on the Tumble on the big ring and took 12mts on the field to put the win out of reach. If you've got that please post it.

  • Millar was a tremendous rider, and i don't think ever got the credit he deserved from the British sporting public.

  • VERY TRUE!! 1984 sports personality of the year he did not even get a mention...mind you it was BBC!

  • Even worse was the so called Scotsport review of the year on STV that year. He wasn't even mentioned, never mind a feature on him. It seems that football and racing pigeons are more important in Scotland. I wrote to Dixon Blackstock of the (Scottish) Sunday Mail to protest about this, our national pre-occupation with a mediocre football team, when we had a Scot who was genuinely 'world class' at his sport who was deserving of more attention. I never had the courtesy of a reply.

  • You are so right mate, Scottish people appreciate fuck all about true sportsmen.

  • The problem is that football dominates the sports media in Scotland. Robert Millar could have won the TDF and he still wouldn't have been appreciated. However, this is no different to any other Scottish sportman who is not a footballer.

  • @strummerino There's obviously a sizeable majority that can't see past Celtic and Rangers, but sweeping generalisations and blanket statements like yours don't reflect the truth of the admiration and even love that many Scots hold for all different kinds of Scots athletes.
