Basically what I do now as a day job- phone customer support- is social work on a smaller scale. It demonstrates that there are few resources and many rules and confinement, yet the expectation to help the customer through an insane array of issues. Stuff that you don't learn about in the month of training.
I think that many different things work for many different people. In saying that, a "life coach" is someone who tells you what to do with your life... they act only as a decision maker which makes a bias approach and gives you opinions that are not your own. Social workers spend more than one hour a week with clients... time spent with clients is based on their needs. Social workers aim to help clients help themselves through positive councilling and problem solving which enables the client.
@MissTarryn - continued.... I am a second year Social Work student.. and without knowledge of social work, and listening to someone elses opinion of university rather than my own... such as the "life coach" I would most likley be like you and have a twisted look on what the job entails. Just because you dont want to help someone with social work, dosnt mean that your opinion should be a reflection of ALL social work, and you do not have the right to put crap in peoples heads.
@MissTarryn ... continued..... Please dont make social work look as though it is useless, or not affective in helping people because if that were the case social workers would be a thing of the past.
This is the scariest video I have seen in a long time. People put their trust in social workers. And now we see the limitations and lack of real qualifications of those people to advise anyone. "Truth comes to you no matter what education you've had." Amen.
Well, I didn't mean to scare you. There is a value in this education, and those people come out with some good tools for supporting people. It's just more valuable to be awakened, than to receive a degree. That is the best position to be in for helping people.
I respect doing what you want to do but i feel you have a lack of education on the dynamics of social work and the versatility of the degree. Not all social workers get "an hour a week to solve peoples problems." Its about resilience and empowerment. If you are "solving someones problems" for them, your not doing it right!
Thanks. I'd agree that I have a lack of education in general, but am working on it.
I'm aware that it is possible to overstep the usual bounds and intended to do so in my practice, but feel life coaches are more empowered to help, and that doesn't require a master's.
im going thru the exact same thing. im 22 considering taking social work in university cause im interested in society problems and inequality, oppression issues ect.. but im even MORE interested in arts. im a very very artsy person in my body mind and spirit specifically in writing and acting. but i just cant take the risk of following that path cause jobs in arts are underpaid and never guaranteed. social work on the other is highly in demand. my brain says social work but my heart screams arts
Yeah, man. I think you got it right on. Social work is not the answer it's supposed to be. The structure has figured out a way to manipulate everything, even the process of helping people. Being true to your inner artist will make you the greatest possible value to society, and eventually you can become a coach, and side-step the whole process of licensing and specific education. The only pre-requisite to that, I would say, is being awakened/ en-lightened.
I'm with you man. Did public transportation bus driving for awhile, now I'm thinking about doing part time charters while doing college FT. I have 1 more year left to get my BS degree. Wish you the best!
social work: jack of all trades, master of none
what they DONT teach you in school= how enslaved the profession is to drug and insurance companies on the mental health level.

I'd like to be driving while in school. Instead, I'm washing dishes in the school dining hall. Surprisingly, not the greatest of student jobs.
