If you wonder why people like this performance of Etincelles so much more than others, stop listening to the melody for a moment and tune into the lower voices in the texture.
The number of pianists in the history of recording who could voice this sort of piece with that level of subtlety and perfection is in the single digits.
Incredibly controll over the piano i have never heard such controll and will probably never do again... Just listen to the pianissimo ffs it is redicilous..
Wanda Toscanini Horowitz was said to have not applauded her husband in concert in at least the last decade of his life. She was his staunchest critic.
@TomBarristerX How bitterly ironic is that.. I don't believe in coinsidence here. Wanda pushed Vladimir to the absolute top. But at a very high price.
My grandpa was a nationally known concert pianist and my grandma did about the same to him. My grandpa turned crazy in the end, moved away from music and almost never played again... The few times i heard him as a kid it unbelievable, even with christmas songs. But he started to hate music when he was FORCED by his surroundings..
@laqin007 he probably forgot their anniversary for the third time (as he clearly indicates during the applause), we all know what he wasn't getting that evening......

You cannot compare this anymore with modern piano artists. It is technically too limited. To rate this above others purely a matter of nostalgia.

This is Horowitz's slightly altered version, which I think is great and improves the ending a lot.

@laqin007 Because after being exposed to Horowitz for so many years, she had developed an unusually high tolerance for awesome.

He's so economical with his hands, it's unbelievable. It hardly looks like his fingers are moving at all, which they most assuredly are!
FulchesterUnited 2 years ago
economical is an interesting choice of word but yes you're right. there is plenty of horizontal movement but very little in the vertical plane.

...who else do have the certain skills to play this etude like horowitz......nobody!

You should check out a young man named James Rhodes... differnt style and phasing but equally as gripping.
