I still just can't believe how many good songs this guy has written. Not just with Pixies, but the Frank Black solo albums are ridiculous as well. Get Teenager of the Year if you don't have it already!
This is one of my favourite Pixies songs, and I just love watching this video and singing harmonies to this bare boned acoustic version! Well done, Charles!
What a great song writer. Wow. Strange to hear about the inspiration to some of his weirder lyrics and find that what inpsired it is even weirder than the lyrics. lol
Barre the 1st and 2nd (and 6th, normally) strings with your 1st finger at the 1st fret, then barre the 3rd, 4th, and 5th strings at the 3rd fret with a flattened 3rd finger - or use your little finger: like an A chord shape moved up one fret. looks like he probably mutes the 6th string.or just doesn't barre it.
@machbaby I just worked it out, I am not sure of the name but I will describe it... It is the same chord that is the 'F' at 1:32 - just you put the fingers down one string, Its still a powerchord, just on the higher strings? The set of power chords that are rooted on the A string not the E string, like the chord at 1:32.
I hope that makes sense, Frank plays it with wierd fingering so it looks confusing but I think it is a simple chord.
I was wanting to do a cover of this and never realized what kim was saying at the end, I thought she was just kinda singing a melody but no real words. Now i see that she was singing VE - L - O - U - R I A. ...cool.
@benympls He did really explain the myth very well, but they say Lemuria stretched fron the east coast of Africa to near California and was REALLY BIG.I get what you mean i was thinking the same thing.Lemuria is a pretty modern name compared to the legend.most people believed they traveled by boat.
the lemurian girl he met was hairy so he called her "velouria"
The STORY IS : This large continent Lemuria disappeared overnight into the Pacific Ocean over 12,000 years ago in a vast cataclysm ,The hallow Mount shasta (shasta sheen) in north cali is supposedly the home of the advanced survivors of Ancient Lemuria so the song is about frank meeting a lemurian girl, resident of mnt shasta
(very beautiful but hairy)
"most likely she was just a hairy crazy hippy chick "
Theirs sum BIG problems with this story;1 Madagascar is in the Indian ocean NOT the pacific, also i hate it when people use english words as a base word to prove a point for another country Lemur is the word WE use. In their language lemur is gibberish. 3 they flew? all the way to mount shasta? how did they fly? why did they go so far? are they humans? this is the most hippie BS ive ever heard, he doesnt even know what ocean Madagascar is in
No not trolling, a friend posted this on facebook and it was the such misstated none sense i couldnt believe it. I really love the fact that Madagascar is in both pacific and indian ocean, oh yeah and they fly or fly in/on something great. Classic, i dont think he's serious but the fact people believe this crap is beyond me.
Anybody who's ever listened to the Breeders (or Frank Black's solo work for that matter) knows that Kim Deal was HUGELY important to the band. Hell, Gigantic was the best song on Surfer Rosa, and she wrote it. It's a pity Charles didn't let her write more for the Pixies...they could have been the biggest band of the 90s.
@Dryzaum I don't know... I think that Pixies worked like some kind of family. Even in loudQUIETloud they said that they disbanded because they were a disfunctional family but reunited because they need to be together again and try solve their problems.
Listen to him again... "Lemuria" is a mythical lost continent like Atlantis. According to legend, it was once part of the same landmass as Madagascar and India and due to plate tectonics just kind of sunk into the sea.
Awesome. Always loved this song. Looks like he's having some pain in his left arm, hence the arm band, hope it's not chronic. I worked at a mechanic shop for awhile and one of the older guys there wore one of those for the pain in his arm from constant wrench turning.
@Louquivole I can't even describe how crazy it's been, but there is hope. I saw her a couple months after posting and will see her again in a few weeks! :D
i heard this on the radio as i while driving and had to pull over just to listen in aww of what i was hearing. frank black, youre the best, thank you for your music.
"because you know velour, velouria, you know she was kinda covered in fur, you know what I mean? She was you know, she was smooth and beautiful, but you know she was furry y'know? "
This is songwriting.

I should not have heard that explanation.
Doesn't really matter though, I guess, because it still feels to me like an ode to California, as a geographic place, taken as a whole.

@machbaby Fmsus4. I think it's called.
