Britain's voting system has to be changed, its complatly undemocratic and can allmost be considered a joke.

It doesnt make any sence that a party gets a seat for 1 more vote then the 2nd party in a district and thereby make all other votes useless.

Why does Britian uses a local election system for their 'general' election?

I've still to read up on the different voting systems. I'm not familiar with the version of apparently more proportional new fptp system the tories are proposing to lib dem, but knowing them, it won't be much better and will still guarantee them more seats. i think lib dem are wanting stv, which in theory i'm not too keen on, but i think it's in practice in northern ireland for local and european elections and works better. if this election were truly proportional, we'd have 20 ukip seats.

Could somebody please tell me how our voting system works? We didn't get one seat despite being the fourth largest party in terms of votes, with 917,832 votes, yet Sinn Fein only received 171,942 votes yet gained 5 seats? How is this fair?

@FaithIsAccidental It depends how concentrated your votes are, candidates to become an MP stand in constituencies and need to win the most votes in that constituency to win the seat. So, if you get a million votes across hundreds of constituencies like UKIP you might not get a majority in any one constituency. Sinn Fein only stands in 18 seats so their votes though far fewer are more concentrated.

We have the same problem over here in the U.S. the media swings far left, i've seen many videos of Farage attacked by the b.b.c. or other news people. The way they ask him questions, like if he was a criminal. I don't know enough about the politics of the U.K. but it seems like the two mayor parties along with the lib. dem. are all part of a big mountain of crap. U.K.I.P. seem very honest, to the point, and ready to help their country.

conservatives got a seat for every 35,000 ish votes, so if the election was done more fairly like it is in other countries (including america i think), ukip shouldve got at least 25 seats.

more than 3% of the people voted for ukip and we have no one to represent us....there is no one there to make a stand for what we voted for.

@FaithIsAccidental Britain gets split into 360(I think) constituencies, and within those constituencies whoever gets the most votes gets the seat. The party who gets the most seats has the most sway in parliament, you need about 320 seats to have a majority government , so that when people vote your party gets its way.

@FaithIsAccidental its the first past the post system we addopted in the 90's which put bluntly is corrupt and only in place to keep labour and conservatives in power for as long as possible. we need prepotional representation as that system depends on the number of votes and is far more democratic then the piece of crap first past the post system.
