The US needs a mandatory spay and neuter law. TNR is full of fail, im sure URI is a very humane way to die. And any dangerous animal for public safety should be PTSed. You cant adopt out every animal that comes through a shelter door. There are just not enough good homes, would you really want to give a cat or dog to someone that lives in government or low income housing they cant afford to take care of themselves how would they take care of a animal. Spay and Neuter is the answer.
I'm with Nathan and have been from the beginning since he began, he deserves more credit than he gets as HSUS, ASPCA, American Humane, PETA, and others fight him all the way. Look up Oreo's Law in NYC, and you will find these highly funded groups fight adamantly against the no killing of animals. They also claim credit for the successful shelters who put in place Nathan's recommendations.while fighing him every step of the way, look up Austin shelters, you will see. Kudos to Nathan!
Having been involved in animal advocacy here in Las Vegas for over five years, I can attest to the plethora of pathological liars opposing No Kill. The Pro-Kill shelter propagandists are running scared. No Kill programs work, period. Look at SF SPCAS (before Ed Sayres took over), Thompkins, County, NY, Reno, NV, Charlottesville, VI, and Austin, TX. There is no excuse for the blatant deception of HSUS sycophants nor for shelter management mediocrity when it comes to caring for shelter animals.
Read his book, litlrooh. Then, look at shelters across America. His ideas have either been in place much longer than he has been, or have failed after he took over.
Unfortunately, Nathan lies about what he's done in shelters, his book, Redemption is more or less out of print, because what he proposes, while a great idea, he doesn't offer anyone the reality of what happens in "no kill shelters." Rick Avanzino mastered no kill, Winograd destroyed hardwork.
@christa4animals You need a reality check. Check out the work of the Nevada Humane Society. His book is a bestseller. His new book Irreconciliable Differences further exposes the REAL villians.
@VegasKJV Oh, man, dude, you haven't the foggiest. His book (neither the first nor the second have ever made it to any best sellers list)--you either buy it from Wino or you buy it from your local puppy miller. Winograd no longer has a bar license, and is frustrated and perturbed at a system that works much better than his, and he can't get a job to save his soul. Apparently, YOU need the reality check.
Nathan! Your the best!! My Mom was the first cat lady I ever knew too! We all love animals in my family and are animal advocates! Thank you for everthing you do! I hope you know how appreciated you are...
i wish people knew the truth about humane societies and shelters.. why won't celebrities use their fame to shine light on all the killing going on! i wish i can take them all home but i can't. my family tries to save as many as we can. i love animals so much!
We rescued a tux cat from the Hilton Head shelter, a "no kill" shelter. He's a great puddey tat. One bit of advice: DO NOT buy Pounce treats for your cat, flavored with catnip. I call it "kitty krack." All he cares about now is that "drug." I'm getting him off that stuff. All he cares about is his next fix. No more. Puddey hangs around the kitchen, waiting for the next dose. People, don't buy the stuff. He'll be back to normal in a couple weeks. He'll have to do without. Just say no!
BTW, our cat was found near Sun City HH, and ended up at the HHI shelter. They keep their cats and dogs as long as they live or are adopted. Dad named him "Riley," as in "The life of Riley." He's a spoiled brat, that cat. Intellegent, purrs like a motor, loves to be loved. I love my puddey tat. Hands up for no kill. HHI is well run, they care. What would PETA do? Nothing like the real lovers of animals, which is, to maintain them, no matter if feral or not. Three cheers for HHI animal shelter!
Yes, and just for some perspective, in 2009 alone, PETA killed 97.3% of their animals. PETA! Give me a break. HSUS, ASPCA, and PETA are all alike. They all lie.
I LOVE Nathan!! I used to be in favor of killing feral cats, and had the AUDACITY of calling myself a cat lover. Now I really understand how feral cats fit into the ecosystem and how we can manage them without killing them. Thank you Nathan!!!
Thank goodness for this man and his book -- hopefully people will abandon this 'defeatest' attitude when it comes to stray animals, and stop taking the 'easy' way out that is euthanasia. THERE IS A BETTER WAY. These animals do not have to die. Anyone who cares about animal welfare should read his book!
Nathan Winograd applies good old fashioned common sense - something that the majority of the human race has lost when it comes to caring for our animal friends ! Thumbs up to Nathan - :) !
We need more people like Nathan and less people like dezbean. I think dezbean needs to buy a copy oof redemption & read the entire book. Next you should try to visit one of the shelters Nathan has helped. As for the Michael Vick dogs that you said were going to have a life of solitary confinement, you are sadly mistaken on that one. National Geographic is at Best friends right now filming the dogs progress for the new show Dogtown. Maybe you should visit Best Friends and see for yourself.

This man is a fraud. It's easy to want to "save" animals, but when there's a crisis of too many animals & not enough homes, it's cruel & foolish to warehouse them in disgusting, crowded conditions while we wait for these homes to magically appear.
Shelters euthanize because there are just too many animals! Keep them suffering but alive? How is that a solution? Several of Vick's dogs are now sentenced to solitary confinement for the rest of their lives, and Best Friends calls this a rescue...
This is the only solution that works - period! Small minded people will always find way to try and miscredit those who are pioneers and visionaries. How unfortunate that they just don't care about saving animals. Nathan's program is the future!

It makes no sense to spend valuable resources on maintaining animals that pose a public danger. Although behavioural rehabilitation in many cases is possible, many better adoption candidates are passed over due to lack of funds in many organizations. It is a sad decision, but is it worth the risk to place a dog with the history of agression in the off chance that he would revert back to his prior behaviour and pose a risk? How about the number animals that are euthanized in its place?
Someone asked "I have been told that these types of animals would be euthanized because they are not adoptable... I also understand that he believes every home should have a pet-"
Both of these statements are untrue. Shelters under Winograd's control (and advice) do NOT kill handicapped animals "as a matter of policy." They adopt them out. And I have never heard or read - in a primary source versus envious rumor - of him saying that every household needs a pet.
Nathan is intelligent, innovative, honest, and--thankfully--resilient. He is nearly singlehandedly changing the outdated methods our culture employs to manage homeless animals' numbers. Those who are critical of him are either protecting the status quo (i.e., shelter workers trained in the HSUS-promoted-and-protected method of killing to manage numbers), or jealous.
If you are strident and want to work on the politics like Nathan, go for it. If that's not your thing, keep it simple. Go to your area shelter and offer to help out 1 or 2 hours per week. Your time will be well spent.
Everyone has the ability to energize their local County Board of Supervisors, Media, Community Service organizations, youth groups, to improve the animal sheltering, rescue groups, feral colony management, Fostering of needy animals, Outside Adoption to make their own town & county the best that it can be for the animals. Don't wait for the changes, make them yourself.

His numbers are artificial. There is no way it costs only $1.60 to neuter a feral cat and a spay is much more costly. In addition, the lifelong supplying of food costs money as well.
Also, the Tompkins County SPCA that he has been touting as so successful is now saying it doesn't have enough money to maintain their programs.
He has alienated a very large portion of shelter workers who do what they do because they want to help. He's made them out to be monsters, and they are not.
I have heard that he believes in euthanizing deaf, blind or otherwise handicapped animals, because they might not be 'adoptable'. I have also heard that he believes everyone needs a pet - I totally disagree. I know some people who should be never be allowed around children or animals. Can anyone shed any light on this?
How does he feel about deaf, blind or otherwise handicapped animals? I have been told that these types of animals would be euthanized because they are not adoptable... I also understand that he believes every home should have a pet- I know there are some people who should under no circumstances have access to animals or children.
I have not had a chance to finish listening to this video, so I'm anxious to see the answers to these questions.
My cats came from shelters/the streets. I took the Animals in Disasters course, TNR course, and READ info on TNR and Animal Rescue websites; I KNOW the rescue groups in my area & keep in touch with them.
I have a Pre-Rabies vaccine, carry an Animal Rescue kit in my shoulder bag; have rescued 1 cat, 1 dog, 2 LOVEBIRDS, helped get 18 ferals TNR'd. One of the more sociable ones is living with me; each time I see her I think of what might have happened to her without TNR-then I give her a hug.
We are ALL connected. We RESONATE with all of creation -- the animals should NOT have to suffer!! Everyone should know and EMBRACE their responsibilities and duties towards animals, and the environment.
THANK YOU NATHAN!! May there be MANY more like you! I have been advocating HUMANE EDUCATIOn in schools from K-12 since 1995, and I will continue to do so until this is an actuality!
TOO BAD City Councils and County Commissioners have such small hearts -- what can WE do to make them understand this? Should we take them to the killing rooms of shelters and see what happens to ADORABLE ABUSED or ABANDONED animals when NO ONE wants them????
in Eugene Oregon, some animal advocates have been trying to implement Nathan's program but they have found strong resistance (no one knows why) from both the city council and the county commissioners. what a shame.
