  • It is unusual and bright experience.I never knew Fritz Wunderlich made recordings in Italien.And it is so lovely!He had so great musicality!

  • I was at the Met's Don Giovanni. Ramon Vargas WAS great and well deserved he standing ovation. Never heard Dalla Sua Pace any better.

  • i don't get how some of the commentators on this page can claim to know wunderlich's voice and yet not recognize it when they hear it. truly bizarre. can i just say i love the fritz sings this aria? this is an ottavio who could truly destroy don giovanni in a swordfight if he so desired. not the typical pansy ass ottavio we so often are subjected to

    About Don Giovanni, I don't think we can get the performance from here, but thanks for letting me know. I have had no internet connection for the entire week. It was a looong week! :-)

  • Hi myyellowlabfan, I too have just seen the current Met Don Giovanni in HD and Ramon Vargas blew me away and was easily the highlight of the production. He is without doubt for me THE tenor exponent of Mozart and he achieves all those things that Mozart demands in his music. He had incredible breath control giving an impeccable legato line that is ESSENTIAL for Mozart. But the tenderness with which he made his love declaration and the soft singing were absolutely sublime. It's missing here.

  • This Voice is never Fritz Wunderlich. Hear him singing in german, there is a very great difference!

  • AchimKGK: just because YOU cannot recognize Wunderlich's voice in this recording (how can anyone doubt it; ONE note suffices!), it doesn't mean this isn't Wunderlich. For your information, this was recorded LIVE at the Vienna State Opera on June 22, 1963. The cast was as follows:

  • Ok Geronimo, it could be. I hear the end of the song and it sounds like the voice of Wunderlich. But the dark voice of him sounds different from all other recordings I have. And I own a huge collection of him.

  • No, it is not an early recording. Fritz doesn't sing italien in his early recordings and his timbre wasn#t so dark. I own a lot of recordings of him. This is not Fritz.

  • This is not Fritz Wunderlich. Never. The timbre of this singer is more dark than the timbre of Wunderlich. I know the voice of Fritz Wunderlich very well. He never pushed his voice like this singer. Hear the german version and you'll here the difference.

    I think it's an early recording so not his mature voice. Still superb though.

  • @AchimKGK this is fritz wunderlich. you hear it when hes singing the high notes. this timbre belongs to him and the fact that his italian wasnt that good is one of the reasons why he is pushing the voice to get a full and bright (dark) tone!

    I highly recommend Aksel Schiotz' rendition of this (its on utube) in some ways I like his interpretation better even though Wunderlich is my favorite lyric tenor (next to Gedda.)

  • @ShawDAMAN He might seem to be easy, but he really isn't (well, not for me at least). I hope they'll all forgive me for trying my very first sketches on them. Sometimes I feel guilty ;)

    Thanks for mentioning Schiotz. It's the first time that I'm hearing his name. I just watched his video, and it was brilliant! A wonderful classic performance, like Simoneau's. I think Wunderlich is taking a risk by trying to create a more heroic, more reliable Don Ottavio, but I just love his precision.

  • @RoyKa2010 I agree. He's not easy. I tried Jan Peerce once too and found a very difficult time of it. Haha. Faces are some of the most difficult things to draw because the very slightest line or dot can completely change the look or expression! I hate it and love it at the same time. Haven't attempted one in probably 6-8 months.
