Ive had a pair for almost eight years, I hear the water splashing but I never get to see the do it. I call it a miracle from God , that once as I was feeding them, my male got out the cage and stood on top of the cage the whole time female going crazy back and forth, I think she was scare to b left behind. But he never left her, I slowly open the top partion and talked very smoothly him into going in. He actually did!! Very catious , but he did. That's my lil miracle;)

we used to have a group of these and they really love apples and raspberries

we gave them a way because we couldnt take care of them last time i was them they started to make alot of noise going towards the cage edges to see if i had anything good for them and ofcourse i did ^^

I had two zebra finches when I was 12 (1987) named Herb and Dot. I was proud and took great care of them. I was living in California at the time from my home state in Texas. I named them after my neighbors that were like my temp grandparents while we stayed in California. Sadly we drove back to Texas after our year long stay, and my finches died. I did not witness this thank goodness. Anyway, I loved those finches!! Love this video, brings back memories.

To the poster below: while I understand why it may seem like people are doing a bad thing to the birds by keeping them in cages, the small ones have a much longer life span when kept as pets. The larger parrots homes are quickly becoming destroyed and keeping them as pets is a way to keep them from going extinct.

i got some sad news.... my brother had 2 zebra finches they are a little small and my mom forgot to fill their food box again... and then when we came to see them in the morning in November 7th 2010 they.... were.... Dead... T-T there go his 4th and 5th zebra finch in the past 5-6 months!!!!

@sulyn123 they make great pets. Like any other bird you just don't pester them. Mine used come to the edges of the cage and talk to me. So don't believe the sales people. Use common sense and let the birds get used to you and they will adapt to you.

@probot65 No, not at all, and even if she did, their beaks aren't sharp enough for it to hurt you.

@probot65 Just don't make fast movements around them. They sleep on the perch. They do like apples and oranges. Not sure what else. You have to be careful. Some fruits and vegetables are toxic. Avocados, for example.

ok so i just got some finches and i wanted to know how long intill the baby finches will hatch if you know cause i dont know if the eggs r good or not

if the the parents sit on the eggs patiently - most of the time there must be one sitting in the nest - the babies will hatch after 11-13 days. So if you see them sitting and after two weeks there is nothing happening, the eggs were not good and you can take away them. If babies come you begin to hear their very quiet beeping noises that get louder every day.

problem at the moment, the mum keeps pickin on one individual baby...i dont know y, shes had about 4 other clutches (NOT IN A ROW, A GOOD COUPLE OF MONTHS BETWEEN EACH) i have removed the nest so she cant ave another clutch, she is not pregnant, and only attacks the same one over n over, making a horrible noiseand pulling the poor tings feathers out. i leave the cage doors open so they can freely fly around, although the parents never leave the cage

make sure its full up enough...it should be fine with drinkin as its a natural thing

make sure u have more than one finch..they should never be kept on their own as they are VERY social animals. this might explain why its always on the bottom

most finchies will stay at the top of the cage...all of mine are always at the top...although 5 of them are currently sleeping on my bed....hope they dont poo on it :P

A bird will get used to people. Even wild birds might feed of your hand that way. Just remember that the only place where you securely hold the bird tightly so that the risk of injure is the smallest, is from the feet.

I've petted wild birds on the head.. very carefully of course. A bird not used to people can and will pet if not feeling secure or doesn't trust you. When in a firm grip only the most temperamental wild birds have bitten me.
