Yeah they are related. The Australian Swamp Hen we call the Pukeko. They diverged from eachother a long time ago, with the Takahe evolving in a relatively predator free environment, hence it's inability to fly.
I like the name Takahe much more. I can't explain why, but it sounds much more birdy and airy, where as Pukeko sounds like something you do after a hard night out... Well, the name may be fit for Aussie humans, but I the birds...
Why do you have a Maori name for an Aussie bird anyway?
whenever i see a wacky obscure and/or newly discovered ancient animal i like to think how it would taste. all birds look like chickens to me with their wings and drumsticks, but boy this ones different, the way it moves more like a dinosaur.

The legs look thicker, but the colouration and proportions look similar. Any chance they are related?

Ah, the modern day Dodo...Looks like a cross between a moa and a chicken. Its so cool that theyre not extinct.
