Actually if Obama was white he would not be president. Obama was chosen to give the keynote speech for John Kerry back in 2004. Obama was chosen to give the speech because he was black; John Kerry's keynote speech was with the backdrop of Martin Luther King's I have a dream.. At that time Obama was the only person running for a senate seat who was black. Obviously Obama was the only choice they had. Obama gave the keynote speech eloquently reading the teleprompter and the rest is history.
THIS IS VERY NIT PICKY AND PETTY. MY GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS WEREN'T SLAVE OWNERS AND IF THEY WERE...............SO FUCKING WHAT. HI IM JOHN " NO YOUR NOT, YOUR THE WHITE MAN AND WE HAVE A LOT OF YOU WORKING HERE ALREADY" HUH WTF? "SORRY SIR ITS CALLED AFFIRMATIVE ACTION"
90% of blacks still support Obama, while the rest of America only supports him by %40-50.. There's a lot of racist black people voting for Obama solely because of his skin color.
Obama is merely a corporate pre-selected puppet, doesn't really matter what color he is, he's a corporate spokesman. Military covering up BP's mistakes.. Goldman Sachs, Chase bank puppet.
I think a lot of minorities believe that if you just work hard, you can be anything but ignore the reality that we are steered into stereotypes. We're either steered to be "silent and smart", "athletic and artistic" or "secretive, religious and radical". And more times than not we stay in those boxes. We tend to be characters w/ our own restrictive scripts while caucasians can bounce in and out of those fields.
I also want to point something out. Asians suffer from racism in different ways. Yes, whites might accept Asians as intelligent, intelligent workers but rarely do we see Asians in enough leadership positions as execs or ceos. And why arent there many Asian models or actresses on t.v. They do it in Asian countries why not here. Blacks athletc and artistic. Minorities are stereotyped in boxes, and kept restricted in those boxes.Whites can be any and everything. They can be both athletic andsmart
I know Japanese people who come here and their children go "back" to Japan to live. Asians have a choice. They are not forced to live here. Asians in Japan and other countries likewise are not easily granting special favors to their new immigrants.
Whites have been here for hundreds of years now. Just like the Japanese have been in Japan for a long time. Don't they get any kind of "points" for being here, just like the Japanese get points for being in Japan for a long time?
Naturally, they are wealthier, but you dont' see all the hard work it took to get there.
I cried when I listened to your statements. From a blk woman, thank you. Thank you for speaking in context. Thank you for being tolerant. Thank you for seeing that even when a blk man campaigns, works hard, there's no affirmative action program in campaigning, he is still told he didn't get there through his own hardwork. With or w/out affirmative action minorities will always be told they are not good enough.
I saw what you were trying to say. Racism as you see is a 2 front problem. AA can only address the one issue of how you seemly treat minorities. The other? How you think about them? Unless you use mind control some will think of only how will this hurt my side. I have yet to ever hear any native american argue that some black beat them out on some job. Or even a black saying that an asian took their college spot. Funny that.
Dump affirmative action, go with merit and test scores. Go with natural selection and good work ethics. Affirmative action seems to mean that you give to those that are inferior.
Let's get rid of "Race" n' make fun of ppl based on appearance. That Black dude has thick lips. That yellow guy has slits for eyes. That White Guy looks like he's halfway from turnin' into bacon. Notice how i used colors instead of race terms.
Judging from that comment, you think that even mentioning race perpetuates racism...that we're all humans and we shouldn't see race...that Affirmative Action only continues to use race. And that's racist?
If you think you don't see race, you're wrong. We are all socialized in the US to see race rather saliently. I will bet you that if I was White, you would react to me quite differently. You may still disagree with me, but you would most definitely have a difference reaction to my RACE.
I would not be so rash as to form an opion based on ONE specific case. That case was brought up w/ a person I had been chatting with. I certainly would have challanged any circumstance that unfairly favored the unqualified over the qualified! I am white, I am pretty well educated & I have had my skills put under a microscope during the course of my career, everyone I know has. U have a very slanted view or perhaps don't know enough of what you speak. I had to measure up fully, it never hurt me.
Have you been questioned and scrutinized *because* of your race? The argument here isn't that only People of Color face this dilemma. What I AM saying is that People of Color are not seen as fully deserving their place simply because of their race. Underlying your statement is that people are equal racially...that everyone goes through the same thing. The simple reality is that that is just not the case. When you refuse to listen to People of Color saying there's a problem, you perpetuate it.
Angry:, U have a bee in your bonnet based on something. I dont know what that thing is but U have had many a good explanation given U from sincere views. U refuse to acknowledge thier intelligence & experiences. U find one small word U can hound on & dismiss all the other sensibility. I am comfortable my views R not based on racism. God knows it, thats enough. Udon't know alot about alot of things concerning the stupidity of A/A & your ears are closed so U will Never learn them. Goodbye.
Calling AA stupid *is* racist. Because not only does it DENY the necessary institutional things that need to be done to counter the legacy of racism (and current racism at that), it also assumes that our society can and does treat people equally.
I personally don't think I've been given "good explanations". To you, they may be. But to think that I would change my mind when I have so fervently stood by my position? You must think so highly of yourself. I can do without the pseudo-independence.
You say my ears are closed because I don't agree with you. How is the level to which I agree with you any sign of cognitive flexibility? Telling me I don't know a lot about a lot of things...again, only because I *disagree* with you. You're interpreting my disagreement as my inability to listen to rational ideas because you're put off by it. I am not refusing to acknowledge intelligence and sensibility because you have presented neither intelligence NOR sensibility.
U R obsessed. I cant imigine that U can do any good 4 ANY cause when U TWIST words like that. What I said WAS,U have been given many good explanations sincerly & U refuse to ACKNOWLEDGE thier experiences etc. I NEVER said U had to agree W/ anyone. U have Blowhard tendancies, U not once see anothers point, U just make another one. U R missing a compassion chip. When U have seen the hell I have seen AA cause U will get it. & OFCOURSE came the cheap RACIST dig. Agree w/U or B racist. SICKENING!
USA, I'm so sick of this BULL they use to try to exonerate A/A. I'm putting a video together to show just how badly it harms EVERYONE. If u have anything you want me to include I will. I saw a piece in the paper re how a formerly highly rated Co. went down the toilet after they were forced to eliminate entry/placement tests for certain people. Maybe this guys family would like to have thier business run to the ground by unqualified workers. Its NOT racist to say take the test like everyone else
Even when that test is culturally biased? When standards of education are based on who gets to define those standards? Standards aren't naturally standards. There is a process of standardization that is NOT free from power. You're *assuming* that those who do benefit from AA are not qualified when I am arguing quite the opposite. AA programs that are married to transitional programs have resounding success in colleges. AA doesn't harm EVERYONE. You have the perception that it does.
Thanks John, I for sure will be in touch. Ya sure ya want to hang with a "religious zealot"? Haha...Amazing, they have thier little talking points, and anyone who does not drink the kool aid is automatically a racist and a God-freak. Is there a boot-camp for these little soldiers someplace? Anyway, I'll be looking forward.
Boot-camp? It's called CRITICAL THINKING. I didn't jump to the conclusion about religiosity. I saw the user's profile and recent activity. Talking about kool-aid...you're not one to accuse someone of using buzz words.
Racism is *not* about individual acts of hate. Part of it is rather actively buttressing the systematic oppression of a group of people while using rhetoric to deny them justice.
This may have to be a 2 parter, but then you win, I will wait til we can put out a video. First, I was the one who way back said that QUALIFIED persons of ALL races/sexes should not be kept out. U keep trying to change a view from one who has learned by experience to racist, & thats why U get no respect & support in general. Do U grasp the pressure companies are under be successful? Many have life work at risk, bigger companies have to meet government standards of profits & answer to holders.
Do U know that entire INS companies have been brought down because certain levels of profits are not held in escrow? They just get shut down, everyone looses, even the clients. No one can afford to fail, and as long as the employee is productive and savvy they dont care who they are. A "Culturally biased" test does not even come into play. They need to know that U know what is needed to be a plus for them. In the health ins business the test is (was) almost universal. How can U assess a medical
report from a doc if U dont know the systems of the human body or understand medical terms? These things aren't basics, they come w/education or work experience. There is no profit in giving people months of private classes...just so they can qualify. Fed. law says they must be paid in full, & U have to hire trainers etc.. A/A will fight that the person should not have to come in on entry levels. I have seen this a 1000 times. The co. I worked for USED to FAR surpass govt standards of accuracy.
But came within a hares breath of being shut down once advancement tests had to be eliminated for minorities. Now I only say minorities because they were the only ones who could not be tested. I am sure a good deal of Whites were unqualified too (& not all minorites were unqualified), but the point is the minorites had to be given the jobs. It was a disaaster. Can u grasp a T.A. who knows less than the staff they are supposed to be aiding? Accuracy was LESS than acceptable. Everyone lost. Sad.
What good explanations? What may be good explanations to you are not good explanations to me. If I did agree with you, you would not be accusing me of not acknowledging people's experiences. It's *because* I don't agree with you that precisely you find it to be so indefensible.
The hell that you've seen....what does that have to do with AA anyway? Your life experiences shape the way you see things. There is no truth. No ultimate reality. Our perceptions of AA are what frames our realities.
You're right when you say I will never learn. I will never learn to be a nationalistic religious zealot with no regard for global citizenship. I will never learn to pass off to God what can be done here and now. I will never learn to condescendingly tell people they don't know enough. I will never be YOU and that bothers you. You are so deeply in your deluded view of the world and it will only make your suffering worse. I really hope that you come to view compassion and wisdom as the answers.
(Most) People didn't question Barack Obama's sucess and experience because he's African-American (or partially), It's because of his age, his different jobs in the government and politics or lack thereof. I do believe that several people voted for Barack Obama mainly because they wanted to (supposedly) complete the struggle for civil rights & equality for people of color. They wanted to see an African American in office to show they matter, and have a voice & representation, other than policies
I read an essay re Affirm/Actn yesterday. IT pertains to everyone who made use of A/A from our President right down. To sum it up it amounted to this sad truth: Forget about the non-minority folks who qualifed but got shut out do to being White etc. Look at the person who Uses A/A & gets into, (& is aided in staying) in a college that they needed "the fix" to get into, or got their position that way. He is FOREVER plaqued by the knowlede that he did not do it fairly or by his own merit. Sad
NoName: Listen to the video? Ya mean the guy who's washing himself & trying 2 point @ others? Plagued by white priviledge? What freakin century do U live in? There are No "Fixes" here. We take a NYS Troopers exam & score a 99 & come in 2nd to a Black guy who got a 74& third after a female Latina or Black who got a 59. The yr my Bro applied to med Schl Suma Grad from NYU as close to a 4.0 as possible? sorry kid theres a 10 yr moritorium on white boys. Plagued by priviledge? U wish. need more?
hey 624787, save our breath bro, they hear what they want to hear. My niece just had to take a 3hr exam to get into an advanced track program at her place of business. She stayed in for a month studying, hardly slept so she could study, made hersef sick, but she made it. The monority chick from the clerical pool (no less) HAD to be placed in the program..NO testing was allowed! What the??? Ask mw who bombed out...so who wins?
"The minority chick". Those words sting. Do you know for a fact what that girl had to do to get where she is? Do you know her life story? You know your niece's and if give her the benefit of the doubt, but you quickly jump to accuse the other girl simply because she's at the same place AND she's a person of color. Had she been White, you would never accuse her of using AA to get where she is. THAT is the contradiction I'm pointing out.
U R the 1 who jumps w/o giving benefit. I KNEW what I was talking about. This is NY, the gal walked in w/Sharpton on 1 side & an A/A lawyer on the other. She'd been in CLERICAL pool for 2 mos when she noticed there were none of her race in the 'Elite' program. They explained entry was strictly on highest scores (they dont even meet with you til U qulaify). My niece worked ONE level beneath the Elite progm for 2 yrs B4 she even dared 2 expect a chance at the test, not 2 mention having it waived.
Patty, in my company we see it often. Whats so sad is everyone looses. If a person isn't qualified or it isn't his particular appitude, he is going to fail. So they have been SET UP to fail. & the person who IS geared for the job/ school? Well they get pushed out for not being a particular minority. I'd like to ask ANGRYANTIRACIST what he knows of WHAT IT TOOK for some of those NON monority kids to get there? Poor? Oppressed? worked like dogs to get somewhere? They dont seem to matter DO THEY?
USA: I guess mercy and compassion and fairness is not extended to EVERYONE. Its heartbreaking to see a kid strive, sacrifice, and work so hard to reach his/her dream then get told he/she is excluded because of pressures from A/A. It has broken my heart many times over the years. Who makes up to the Businesses for all that is lost with this foolishness? I guess they don't matter either...Right?
White working class people also need a break. The scope of this video and my arguments have been about RACE. Oppression works on many levels. Race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. Like I said, AA is not perfect. People who benefit from it SHOULD go through a process to acculturate to new environments. Programs like this DO exist and students who DO get in to schools DO succeed.
And so that specific case is enough for you to justify an argument against AA? And yet you STILL haven't addressed the fact that had she been WHITE and had WHITE advocates, you would never have accused her of cashing in on AA. THAT is the racism I am talking about. Because of her RACE, you decide to MAKE it about race. White people DO NOT have their talents and skills QUESTIONED. They're not accused of succeeding based on their race. Just take responsibility for it and we can work from there.
Sad isn't it John? next time some of these Affirm/Action "geniuses" think up thier next trick I hope they think about the possiblity of one of thier children needing surgery from the "Monority of the Month" rather than the most qualified. Some things just went too damn far. My neighbors son works 2 jobs & is in college, he needed help with a subject and had to pay $100 per hr for tutoring, the Black kids in class got thier free. I dont mind that but why not for the kid who is killing himself?
Affirmative Action isn't a fix. I wish, though, that you would see that the execution of AA is not as formulaic as you make it out to be. What we're NOT talking about is why people are turned down from education in the first place, regardless of race. Push aside the idea of White privilege for now. Do you believe that AA is taking something away from you personally?
AA in ORIGINAL form was GREAT. Make sure noone gets refused due to Race etc. Now I agree w/ the Cosby theory that the biggest loosers are the ones who lean on AA, (though I don't think it's fair for a White kid who busted his butt & DOES qulaify, to be pushed aside), & dont kid yourself, thats what happens. Me persoanlly? Im proud of my 4 kids, it was bone-crushing at times but they did it on their own & R selfmade men, that is something that AA strips. Our PRESIDENT knows it. How sad for him.
AA's original form was an executive order that private institutions decided to take on for themselves. And if I were you, I wouldn't quote Bill Cosby when talking to a person of color. Cosby's tirade at the NAACP event did him in. No one *leans* on AA. People work hard to get where they are. Given the dismal state of our public educational system, AA only accounts for a small number of young people that deserve to be in better places. You're not accounting for systemic issues.
Re yours: Don't ever begin by telling someone; "If I were you I wouldnt't..." It's arrogant and rude. Many people of color hold Cosby's views in very high esteem. He is telling them they are as GOOD as anyone else. He wants them to have the dignity of earning what they have achieved because he understands that nothing is worth having otherwise. He wants his people to have the honor they deserve. He was not DONE IN, he does not need NAACP, he's earned his honor among people of all races.
The dignity of earning what they have achieved. If you want to talk dignity, let's talk about how People of Color were denied dignity too many times to count throughout the history of the US. Cosby is a firm believer in conformity for dignity, not dignity for individuality. No one said he needs the NAACP. He gave a speech at the NAACP that lost him many many supporters.
Same in my state John, I am all for minorities getting a fair shake, we should see every color and religion and both sexes in all jobs...but how does relaxing or obliterating standards for some people help anyone? I dont live where there are alot of Black people, but the ones I do know are just as capable and smart as the rest of us, why put them down by saying they can't qualify for jobs or schools unless someone fixes it up for them? I would not let anyone do that to me.
AA is not about obliterating standards. Where do you get such an idea? People don't get hired purely because of race. Race is *a* factor, but that does not mean whoever benefits from AA does not deserve to be where they are. And you know who else benefits from other forms of AA? MEN. Far more women apply to colleges than men do. MEN benefit from AA, too. So do ATHLETES and LEGACY students. But only when people of color benefit from it, it gets people angry. THAT'S what I'm talking about.
I agree, I was fully behind the concept of A/Act when it started. But yes, It did get rediculous. I worked for a Major US heath ins co known for quality work. I had to pass with a 90 or better, a stiff entrance exam 2hrs long to qulaify for a midlevel position. Everyone did, & some folks of ALL races failed. The Affm/Actn came in & forced them to eliminate the test for ANYONE of a certain minority. It served noone. There was a massive change in output/qulaity & the company almost went broke
Affirm/Actn started out 2B a good thing . It was established to make sure that a person qualified for a job or for entry into a school etc would not be kept out due to Race(etc.). Great! Then got stupid. Slowly it turned into something embarrassng for the users & unfair bias for everyone else. Some of the "points" added to tests for Troopers, Police, even med school placed many an unqualifed (and doomed to fail) person in the wrong field & screwed those who did qulaify. Everyone lost! Stupid?
No one is color blind. NO ONE IS. I love dating different groups of people but I am not colorblind...I know what asians, whites, & blacks see when they look my way. I figure it's a lose, lose for black people. We just can't win. Even with our half African half white president that was the better candidate... We can't win but other minorities can & it's crazy because our civil rights movement is what lead to the winning. If you were raised by wolves & stuck into society, you still wouldn't be.
We are strong, for thousands of years from desert sands to jungle predators we've survived. We suffer the most and are usually at the forefront of change for the better, its what we do.
So true...where is all the thanks from the other races in this country for the Civil Rights Movement. It didn't just help relieve racial tension between black and white. Many have prospered from it...Mexican, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Africans, Puerto Ricans, Jews, Israelis, etc. Man...the African American struggle in America is unique to World Relations & the enslaved Africans faith in the true God of the Bible is unique to this Democracy that the whole world is emulating.
... vote for affirmative action, it's not fair to blame racism 100%. It's only one factor.
And I don't like it when people say Asian immigrants came here already ahead. My dad grew up much poorer in Taiwan than poor US blacks. I'm doing a Ph.D. in electrical engineering now, and our family got here only through a lot of sweat. There were never any blacks in any of my grad classes. If blacks work harder, they can succeed too.
But I agree there were historical injustices, so I support it.
Black Americans work hard. But the odds are stacked against their favor. To tell them to work harder assumes that hard work always pays off when in reality, it just doesn't. During the past few decades, we've seen a growing gap between the rich and those who are not, combined with a shrinking middle class and inflation rocketing ahead of changes in the minimum wage. It doesn't matter who works harder than others....only some people will reap the benefits of their work because wealth is limited.
the government is more favorable to asians than black. Research!
In Taiwan you fit in... Don't compare.
My brother was looking for a summer job before going to college & when he asked for an app. the manager gave him a weird look.
My little brother is following in my footsteps as a physics major. He is smart & outgoing and networking his butt off but that store manager didn't care about that crap.
So don't give me that asians can do it blacks can crap.
I voted for Obama, but not because he was black. Also I support affirmative action for the same reasons you said. But you have to admit it's unfair. I did really well on my SATs, had good grades, and a lot of extracurriculars, but blacks can score lower. And there was only 1 black in my engineering class. If more took harder but better majors (premed, science, engineering), they would move up. After all, you're paying the same tuition, so why waste money on a useless major? So although I'd ...
I agree, affirmative action mainly becomes an issue when Africn Americans are involved in the discussion......As a young ambitious black male, it is disheartning.
Kudos! Very well done besides hitting the nail right on the head. Your diatribe was insightful enough to be made part of my study material, giving my students a unique perspective on the election and it's candidates. So thanks for an independent look at the race issue as it pertains to the election.
You're 100% right. They also like to say blacks only voted for him because we're black and that makes us racist., too. I hate having to argue such stupid logic but it kills me that they believe it.
It's like... either way we have to validate ourselves... always, always, always. So Obama will have a bigger demon behind him to show more progress than any other president when, during this period, is not possible without time.
I would also just like to add a personal experience I had in high school. A close friend of mine won a full medical scholarship to John Hopkins University when we were in high school. We are both African American. The white kids in the school claimed she only won the scholarship because she is black. What kind of nonsense is this?
People are forgetting that affirmative action still means you must be qualified and that YOU have to be the one to KEEP your foot in the door. You get the door just like whitey if you don't meet expectations... and I never consider Obama to be the first Black president... I consider him to be half African, half White. Stop being so sour people. I graduated top of my class WITH the highest SAT scores... heck where was MY affirmative action? LOL... I had to pay. Nonsense it is.
White people do not consider Obama to be white. White mixed with any other race than white is not considered white by white people. Of course you still need to be qualified even if it is affirmative action but many times people think that if a black person has a phd that they got it in the damn mail or something.
Exactly creepmagnet. Agree 100% It seems like a lot of times these days some people go out of their way , by any means necessary, to prove the black race to be of less intelligence. This will never change. Although I hope that it does.
This is a lot like a half elf because no race considers mixed people to be the same as them. Mixed breeds i think are special, bringing the best of both sides.
Ignorance is a tough battle to fight. What does Obama have to do to earn respect? These ridiculous comments about him becoming president because he is black show great ignorance and persistent racism against black people. Racists are determined but ignorant and many people jump on that bandwagon which continuously fuel the fire.
Second I'd like to comment on obama. That man has an incredible presence. I did not vote for him because he was black, I voted for him because I agreed with his ideals. The things he talked about seemed so logical that it could not be from a politician. I can confidently say obama restored my faith in politicians. Being black, being white, its all unimportant, the only important thing to me is how will you (and we) save this country? To be honest, I thought there was no way he could win...
Hi, 5star video my friend, thoughtful and insightful! You always change my perspective on things.
I am a black male. I am an intelligent black male, intelligent enough to intimidate white males once they get to know me...
About the "color blind society". Never thought about how truly rare it is for a minority to bring up the fact that america is color blind. I would assume they feel that its not true. Simply because its easier to perceive injustice when you are on the receiving end.
Those complaining about crime rates in the Asian community, I would gladly trade crime rates and stereotypes with you. Oh if only they were like yugioh card. "I now play police brutality", you can have that card.
Its not even about crime rates in the end, its about what society thinks when you walk though the door. Assuming you are Asian,if you and i walked into a corporate building you would probably be seen as normal. The would probably expect you to start up the next microsoft or google. As for me they would probably have to resist the urge to call security, I might curse people out, or shoot up the place or something.
"My friend crime is still prevalent among Asian-Americans, you can't work your way out of that." Of course there's crime in the asian american community there has never been a crimeless society in human history, we're talking about ideal conditions here on earth not heaven. Crime in the Asian American community is not as bad as in the black community, Hispanic, or white.
Barack's image was just one of the resons he was voted in. He looked like change, but he really isn't change.
His upbringing ,social training and education was white american. This was a big factor as to why whites voted for him. My original point was that I was tired of hearing the one dimentional expression of a man, that has many dimentions to his race.
The man's l bloodline alone could have gotten him his presidency.
I watched some documentaries on channel thirteen that showed the trials Asian Americans had to go through when they first came to this country. There was a time when Asian Americans were considered to be unintelligent and only capable of crime. Asian Americans worked their way out of those stereotypes, so can other minorities. Obama is a first step in widely advertising the fallacy of minority mental inferiority, with a little elbow grease we are going to make it.
"Asian Americans worked their way out of those stereotypes, so can other minorities. Obama is a first step in widely advertising the fallacy of minority mental inferiority, with a little elbow grease we are going to make it."
My friend crime is still prevalent among Asian-Americans, you can't work your way out of that. I don't understand that statement.
"Actually, Asian American communities have the lowest crime rates in the country...not to mention being the smallest group of people incarcerated. "
Based upon whose statistics? Also did you hear about that incident at Virginia Tech last week. Asian-Americans may or may have the lowest numbers but crime still exist.
The reason why the crime rate is low or so it seems that way is because of asian on asian crime. Asian gangs commit crimes on other asians because they know they wont tell. Police officers often run into this wall when working in asian communities. They are considered outsiders.
Groups can't work out of stereotypes because stereotypes are self-perpetuating. The presence of any one member of a group that fits a stereotype is enough for a stereotype to continue. The Asian American stereotype was never about lack of intelligence or crime. The basic stereotype is that they present a real threat to the power of the United States. They are always the foreigner, waiting to rip the carpet from under the feet of White Americans. Yellow Peril turned Model Minority.
White insecurity is soon going to be an irrelevant factor, i think it was the former head of the CIA on charlie rose a few night ago that said in a broken sounding voice that china is definitively going to be the most powerful country in the world. I'm totally going to learn chinese before that happens.
As a young black woman I hope this is true togusa2030. I think a lot of black people, beginning in the 70's, forgot that there's still so much work that needs to be done.
"Working out of stereotypes" enslaves you to those who believe them. If you know yourself, that's all you need. Why be controlled by what others think?
Because the next person doing the thinking might be interviewing me for a job, considering me for a bank loan or deciding if i am an appropriate tenant for a nice apartment. No one lives in a vacuum, that's life.
Its true what they say that you don't have to be in someone's situation to empathize and understand. Having your intelligence called into question from the moment you are born can be disheartening. Go Obama, go all minorities who have made it to the mountain top, go angryantiracistdude.
I totally agree with Christian. Race was one of the reasons Obama got elected, but I think the determining factor lied and still does lie in the fact that people think he can and will bring about change.
I liked the pt. he brought up about white affirmative action cause if you think about, that's what it is. I also don't think we should be color blind cause it minimizes the struggles of all the people of color and even white people that contributed to the construction of our nation.
Good video yet again. The affects of budget cutting and the omission of affirmative action programs are being felt even at my school. We might be losing our Gender Education program, which has never been included in the school's official budget. People forget that all women are minoritie. The national majority only consists of white males, in particular rich white males. White women have always been minorities, though sometimes they tend to forget this fact.
Apparently, white women benefitted the most from the Civil Rights movement, which while spearheaded by black communities was meant to help everyone and place us all on a equal playing ground. But of course, that doesn't happen in just year or even fifty years. Stuctural change takes time, and people just don't like to see the US for what it currently is. Oh, and relating to another comment, I did hear about the Asian studies programs.
Very true. I have in the past two years seen the subjugation of women throughout history and the one thing more distasteful than racism is gender inequality and even less attention is paid to that subject.
On the issue of affirmative action, I wish we didn't have to use such a process, but white males continue not to see their own privilege in our society, so something like affirmative action leaves them feeling disenfranchised.
Race was one of the reasons I voted Obama. Let 'em hate.
How was his race a factor, when whites voted for him too that doesn't make any sense. Also what about the countless times when blacks have voted for White presidents what can one say on that.
His race *was* a factor. That White Americans voted for him doesn't mean the opposite. We can't say he won in spite of his race either because given the social climate of our country, I think Obama's election is a message to not only ourselves, but to the rest of the world, that we really do believe in a world of equality. Obama's racial heritage plays a role in that.
"I think Obama's election is a message to not only ourselves, but to the rest of the world, that we really do believe in a world of equality. Obama's racial heritage plays a role in that."
Then what does Affirmative Action have to do with the video why not just focus on equality I don't quite understand..
You completely missed the point of this video but both the topics he talked about go hand in hand. HIs statement "I think Obama's election is a message to not only ourselves, but to the rest of the world, that we really do believe in a world of equality. Obama's racial heritage plays a role in that." is true. And he is not the first to say that.
If EAST Asians's abilities are never questioned then there should be more prominent Asians in Corporate America. I think that would be a good subject to cover instead of saying well Whites never question my abilities no they insult you but since people can't understand insults of course one would take it as a compliment doesn't mean it's true.
Heck at an Ivy League university they wanted to cut out Asian Studies altogether so this notion that Asians and Whites are on equal par is an illusion.
You didn't get the idea behind my video at all. What I am saying is that Asian Americans are never questioned for their success but are still held back because of this at the same time. This particular topic is not in the scope of this video.
"You didn't get the idea behind my video at all. What I am saying is that Asian Americans are never questioned for their success but are still held back because of this at the same time."
OKay then why not mention Asians being held back because the way you presented the video was oh I am Asian and I never get questioned on my abilities like black people do whose to say black people get questioned on their abilities and whose to say Asians don't.
Barack is black and White. Hes still black....and hes still white. WHAT IS THE FREAKIN' PROBLEM, PEOPLE!? Does it make a difference? People still want to hold on to demon eating thinking. I am SO sick of hearing people talk about how its wrong to call him black. Makes me so angry...JUST STOP IT ALREADY! Great, video, babe. You are one of the FEW who understands.
Well, Obama himself identifies as both black and biracial. So, there's no reason to deny his self-identification. While I haven't read his autobiography, it isn't unlikely that his experience in the US was that of a black man. When people see him on the street, they won't think "oh that guy is biracial" or "oh, that guy isn't the descendant of West African slaves," they will more than likely treat him like a black man. That may have had something to do with how he identifies today.
Also, I must say that black in and of itself is not a simple or monolithic identity. It's no secret that black encompasses many mixtures, much more than a white identity. It's almost a historical fact that whiteness is defined by what it is not, and blackness has usually been rather inclusive; that's why many black people exhibit different phenotypes, though that variety needn't always imply some mixture. Even Africans are very diverse in appearance without an implied mixture.
"I'm tired of people calling him black, as if that's all he is. but I do agree with you on this topic. "
get over it. why should you care? he has no problem with it, since he calls himself black, & identifies as such. There are many blacks with 2 black parents who attend predominantly white schools & have white family members down the line. whats your point? people call him black because he calls himself such. you act as though if "black" were all he was itd be a negative thing. you have issues.
That's not what he's saying, watch the video again to understand. He means people are only accrediting him as that not based on his skill and work towards his accomplishments but instead many are focusing on his race alone. And he should and can care, everyone in our society should care, because it is affecting the people in this country. He has the right to speak about his views that are obviously correct.
I feel the same way. I brought up those points on another site. I was called a racist and that I hated whites. Some whites can't take the truth. Needless to say those asswipes got several mods to "warn" me. I'm with you 100%.
Your totally right! "angryantiracist" I agree, white and Asian seems to have an higher expectancyin society! We need to live in a colorblind society, However that actually being in practice are slim to Zero, But I will take a stand along with you brother! You are doing the right thing, You anger is a motivation in some sense. To cut down these people who believe foolishly!
"Your totally right! "angryantiracist" I agree, white and Asian seems to have an higher expectancyin society! "
Higher expectations in society? What does that mean. If that is the case then the incident in California in which Caucasian parents pulled their kids out of the school rather than deal with the ORIENTALS should tell even the stupidest person something, that is if that stupid person uses their eyes in the back of their heads not in front of their faces.

Why is racism okay in Japan and China but not in the US?

I think a lot of minorities believe that if you just work hard, you can be anything but ignore the reality that we are steered into stereotypes. We're either steered to be "silent and smart", "athletic and artistic" or "secretive, religious and radical". And more times than not we stay in those boxes. We tend to be characters w/ our own restrictive scripts while caucasians can bounce in and out of those fields.

You also have countries where you look just like everyone else - but that would be difficult, wouldn't it?
AmericanBornWest 2 years ago

Why should they?
AmericanBornWest 2 years ago
Sam

Funny that.

affirmative action IS racism. it requires race-based hiring.
buddhajapan 3 years ago

Pattycakessmiles 3 years ago
Have you been questioned and scrutinized *because* of your race? The argument here isn't that only People of Color face this dilemma. What I AM saying is that People of Color are not seen as fully deserving their place simply because of their race. Underlying your statement is that people are equal racially...that everyone goes through the same thing. The simple reality is that that is just not the case. When you refuse to listen to People of Color saying there's a problem, you perpetuate it.

Pattycakessmiles 3 years ago
Calling AA stupid *is* racist. Because not only does it DENY the necessary institutional things that need to be done to counter the legacy of racism (and current racism at that), it also assumes that our society can and does treat people equally.
I personally don't think I've been given "good explanations". To you, they may be. But to think that I would change my mind when I have so fervently stood by my position? You must think so highly of yourself. I can do without the pseudo-independence.
angryantiracist 3 years ago
You say my ears are closed because I don't agree with you. How is the level to which I agree with you any sign of cognitive flexibility? Telling me I don't know a lot about a lot of things...again, only because I *disagree* with you. You're interpreting my disagreement as my inability to listen to rational ideas because you're put off by it. I am not refusing to acknowledge intelligence and sensibility because you have presented neither intelligence NOR sensibility.

624787John 3 years ago
Even when that test is culturally biased? When standards of education are based on who gets to define those standards? Standards aren't naturally standards. There is a process of standardization that is NOT free from power. You're *assuming* that those who do benefit from AA are not qualified when I am arguing quite the opposite. AA programs that are married to transitional programs have resounding success in colleges. AA doesn't harm EVERYONE. You have the perception that it does.

Thanks John, I for sure will be in touch. Ya sure ya want to hang with a "religious zealot"? Anyway, I'll be looking forward.
USAcountrylove777 3 years ago
Kool-aid...I do my own thinking.
angryantiracist 3 years ago
This may have to be a 2 parter, but then you win, I will wait til we can put out a video. First, I was the one who way back said that QUALIFIED persons of ALL races/sexes should not be kept out. U keep trying to change a view from one who has learned by experience to racist, & thats why U get no respect & support in general. Do U grasp the pressure companies are under be successful? Many have life work at risk, bigger companies have to meet government standards of profits & answer to holders.
USAcountrylove777 3 years ago
Do U know that entire INS companies have been brought down because certain levels of profits are not held in escrow? They just get shut down, everyone looses, even the clients. No one can afford to fail, and as long as the employee is productive and savvy they dont care who they are. A "Culturally biased" test does not even come into play. They need to know that U know what is needed to be a plus for them. In the health ins business the test is (was) almost universal. How can U assess a medical
USAcountrylove777 3 years ago
report from a doc if U dont know the systems of the human body or understand medical terms? These things aren't basics, they come w/education or work experience. There is no profit in giving people months of private classes...just so they can qualify. Fed. law says they must be paid in full, & U have to hire trainers etc.. A/A will fight that the person should not have to come in on entry levels. I have seen this a 1000 times. The co. I worked for USED to FAR surpass govt standards of accuracy.
USAcountrylove777 3 years ago
But came within a hares breath of being shut down once advancement tests had to be eliminated for minorities. Now I only say minorities because they were the only ones who could not be tested. I am sure a good deal of Whites were unqualified too (& not all minorites were unqualified), but the point is the minorites had to be given the jobs. It was a disaaster. Can u grasp a T.A. who knows less than the staff they are supposed to be aiding? Accuracy was LESS than acceptable. Everyone lost. Sad.
USAcountrylove777 3 years ago
What good explanations? What may be good explanations to you are not good explanations to me. If I did agree with you, you would not be accusing me of not acknowledging people's experiences. It's *because* I don't agree with you that precisely you find it to be so indefensible.
The hell that you've seen....what does that have to do with AA anyway? Your life experiences shape the way you see things. There is no truth. No ultimate reality. Our perceptions of AA are what frames our realities.
angryantiracist 3 years ago
You're right when you say I will never learn. I will never learn to be a nationalistic religious zealot with no regard for global citizenship.

Sad

hey 624787, save our breath bro, they hear what they want to hear.
Pattycakessmiles 3 years ago
"The minority chick". Those words sting. Do you know for a fact what that girl had to do to get where she is? Do you know her life story? You know your niece's and if give her the benefit of the doubt, but you quickly jump to accuse the other girl simply because she's at the same place AND she's a person of color. Had she been White, you would never accuse her of using AA to get where she is. THAT is the contradiction I'm pointing out.
angryantiracist 3 years ago
U R the 1 who jumps w/o giving benefit. I KNEW what I was talking about. This is NY, the gal walked in w/Sharpton on 1 side & an A/A lawyer on the other. She'd been in CLERICAL pool for 2 mos when she noticed there were none of her race in the 'Elite' program. They explained entry was strictly on highest scores (they dont even meet with you til U qulaify). My niece worked ONE level beneath the Elite progm for 2 yrs B4 she even dared 2 expect a chance at the test, not 2 mention having it waived.
Pattycakessmiles 3 years ago
Patty, in my company we see it often. Whats so sad is everyone looses. If a person isn't qualified or it isn't his particular appitude, he is going to fail. So they have been SET UP to fail. & the person who IS geared for the job/ school? Well they get pushed out for not being a particular minority. I'd like to ask ANGRYANTIRACIST what he knows of WHAT IT TOOK for some of those NON monority kids to get there? Poor? Oppressed? worked like dogs to get somewhere? They dont seem to matter DO THEY?
USAcountrylove777 3 years ago
USA: I guess mercy and compassion and fairness is not extended to EVERYONE. Its heartbreaking to see a kid strive, sacrifice, and work so hard to reach his/her dream then get told he/she is excluded because of pressures from A/A. It has broken my heart many times over the years. Who makes up to the Businesses for all that is lost with this foolishness? I guess they don't matter either...Right?
624787John 3 years ago
White working class people also need a break. The scope of this video and my arguments have been about RACE. Oppression works on many levels. Race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. Like I said, AA is not perfect. People who benefit from it SHOULD go through a process to acculturate to new environments. Programs like this DO exist and students who DO get in to schools DO succeed.
angryantiracist 3 years ago
And so that specific case is enough for you to justify an argument against AA? And yet you STILL haven't addressed the fact that had she been WHITE and had WHITE advocates, you would never have accused her of cashing in on AA. THAT is the racism I am talking about. Because of her RACE, you decide to MAKE it about race. White people DO NOT have their talents and skills QUESTIONED. They're not accused of succeeding based on their race. Just take responsibility for it and we can work from there.
angryantiracist 3 years ago
Sad isn't it John? next time some of these Affirm/Action "geniuses" think up thier next trick I hope they think about the possiblity of one of thier children needing surgery from the "Monority of the Month" rather than the most qualified. Some things just went too damn far. My neighbors son works 2 jobs & is in college, he needed help with a subject and had to pay $100 per hr for tutoring, the Black kids in class got thier free. I dont mind that but why not for the kid who is killing himself?
ReasonsItrust 3 years ago
Affirmative Action isn't a fix. I wish, though, that you would see that the execution of AA is not as formulaic as you make it out to be. What we're NOT talking about is why people are turned down from education in the first place, regardless of race. Push aside the idea of White privilege for now. Do you believe that AA is taking something away from you personally?
angryantiracist 3 years ago
AA in ORIGINAL form was GREAT. Make sure noone gets refused due to Race etc. Now I agree w/ the Cosby theory that the biggest loosers are the ones who lean on AA, (though I don't think it's fair for a White kid who busted his butt & DOES qulaify, to be pushed aside), & dont kid yourself, thats what happens. Me persoanlly? Im proud of my 4 kids, it was bone-crushing at times but they did it on their own & R selfmade men, that is something that AA strips. Our PRESIDENT knows it. How sad for him.
624787John 3 years ago
AA's original form was an executive order that private institutions decided to take on for themselves. And if I were you, I wouldn't quote Bill Cosby when talking to a person of color. Cosby's tirade at the NAACP event did him in. No one *leans* on AA. People work hard to get where they are. Given the dismal state of our public educational system, AA only accounts for a small number of young people that deserve to be in better places. You're not accounting for systemic issues.
angryantiracist 3 years ago
Re yours: Don't ever begin by telling someone; "If I were you I wouldnt't..." It's arrogant and rude. Many people of color hold Cosby's views in very high esteem. He is telling them they are as GOOD as anyone else. He wants them to have the dignity of earning what they have achieved because he understands that nothing is worth having otherwise. He wants his people to have the honor they deserve. He was not DONE IN, he does not need NAACP, he's earned his honor among people of all races.
Pattycakessmiles 3 years ago

I would not let anyone do that to me.
writerreader7777 3 years ago
AA is not about obliterating standards. Where do you get such an idea? People don't get hired purely because of race. Race is *a* factor, but that does not mean whoever benefits from AA does not deserve to be where they are. And you know who else benefits from other forms of AA? MEN. Far more women apply to colleges than men do. MEN benefit from AA, too. So do ATHLETES and LEGACY students. But only when people of color benefit from it, it gets people angry. THAT'S what I'm talking about.
angryantiracist 3 years ago
I agree, I was fully behind the concept of A/Act when it started. But yes, It did get rediculous. I worked for a Major US heath ins co known for quality work. I had to pass with a 90 or better, a stiff entrance exam 2hrs long to qulaify for a midlevel position. Everyone did, & some folks of ALL races failed. The Affm/Actn came in & forced them to eliminate the test for ANYONE of a certain minority. It served noone. There was a massive change in output/qulaity & the company almost went broke
ReasonsItrust 3 years ago
Affirm/Actn started out 2B a good thing . It was established to make sure that a person qualified for a job or for entry into a school etc would not be kept out due to Race(etc.). Great! Then got stupid. Slowly it turned into something embarrassng for the users & unfair bias for everyone else. Some of the "points" added to tests for Troopers, Police, even med school placed many an unqualifed (and doomed to fail) person in the wrong field & screwed those who did qulaify. Everyone lost! Stupid?

... vote for affirmative action, it's not fair to blame racism 100%.
But I agree there were historical injustices, so I support it.
ap9386 3 years ago

Too many comments from me...

BlackAsianIrish 3 years ago
Exactly.
Childrenscneterh 3 years ago
I would also just like to add a personal experience I had in high school. A close friend of mine won a full medical scholarship to John Hopkins University when we were in high school. We are both African American. The white kids in the school claimed she only won the scholarship because she is black. What kind of nonsense is this?
creepmagnet 3 years ago
People are forgetting that affirmative action still means you must be qualified and that YOU have to be the one to KEEP your foot in the door. You get the door just like whitey if you don't meet expectations... and I never consider Obama to be the first Black president... I consider him to be half African, half White. Stop being so sour people. I graduated top of my class WITH the highest SAT scores... heck where was MY affirmative action? LOL... I had to pay. Nonsense it is.
BlackAsianIrish 3 years ago
White people do not consider Obama to be white. White mixed with any other race than white is not considered white by white people. Of course you still need to be qualified even if it is affirmative action but many times people think that if a black person has a phd that they got it in the damn mail or something.
creepmagnet 3 years ago
Exactly creepmagnet. Agree 100% It seems like a lot of times these days some people go out of their way , by any means necessary, to prove the black race to be of less intelligence. This will never change. Although I hope that it does.
Frenchy5483 3 years ago
This is a lot like a half elf because no race considers mixed people to be the same as them. Mixed breeds i think are special, bringing the best of both sides.

Ignorance is a tough battle to fight. What does Obama have to do to earn respect? These ridiculous comments about him becoming president because he is black show great ignorance and persistent racism against black people. Racists are determined but ignorant and many people jump on that bandwagon which continuously fuel the fire.
creepmagnet 3 years ago

Simply because its easier to perceive injustice when you are on the receiving end.
jigenbakuda 3 years ago
Those complaining about crime rates in the Asian community, I would gladly trade crime rates and stereotypes with you. Oh if only they were like yugioh card. "I now play police brutality", you can have that card.
togusa2030 3 years ago
Its not even about crime rates in the end, its about what society thinks when you walk though the door. Assuming you are Asian,if you and i walked into a corporate building you would probably be seen as normal. The would probably expect you to start up the next microsoft or google. As for me they would probably have to resist the urge to call security, I might curse people out, or shoot up the place or something.
togusa2030 3 years ago

Left wing or right wing, it's the same bird.

"Actually, Asian American communities have the lowest crime rates in the country...not to mention being the smallest group of people incarcerated. "
Based upon whose statistics? Also did you hear about that incident at Virginia Tech last week. Asian-Americans may or may have the lowest numbers but crime still exist.
tanio12 3 years ago
And out of all the high profile crimes you see in the media per year, how many of them are asian americans?
Look up some census bureau stats as well bro.
SXcore 3 years ago
The reason why the crime rate is low or so it seems that way is because of asian on asian crime. Asian gangs commit crimes on other asians because they know they wont tell. Police officers often run into this wall when working in asian communities. They are considered outsiders.
creepmagnet 3 years ago

I'm totally going to learn chinese before that happens.

togusa2030 3 years ago

PrometheanFlame 3 years ago

Apparently, white women benefitted the most from the Civil Rights movement, which while spearheaded by black communities was meant to help everyone and place us all on a equal playing ground. But of course, that doesn't happen in just year or even fifty years. Stuctural change takes time, and people just don't like to see the US for what it currently is. Oh, and relating to another comment, I did hear about the Asian studies programs.
PrometheanFlame 3 years ago

Also what about the countless times when blacks have voted for White presidents what can one say on that.
tanio12 3 years ago
His race *was* a factor. That White Americans voted for him doesn't mean the opposite. We can't say he won in spite of his race either because given the social climate of our country, I think Obama's election is a message to not only ourselves, but to the rest of the world, that we really do believe in a world of equality. Obama's racial heritage plays a role in that.

Heck at an Ivy League university they wanted to cut out Asian Studies altogether so this notion that Asians and Whites are on equal par is an illusion.
tanio12 3 years ago
You didn't get the idea behind my video at all. What I am saying is that Asian Americans are never questioned for their success but are still held back because of this at the same time. This particular topic is not in the scope of this video.

"You didn't get the idea behind my video at all. What I am saying is that Asian Americans are never questioned for their success but are still held back because of this at the same time."
OKay then why not mention Asians being held back because the way you presented the video was oh I am Asian and I never get questioned on my abilities like black people do whose to say black people get questioned on their abilities and whose to say Asians don't.

Everyone calls Obama black because his skin is a bit darker than others.
However Obama is half African and Half White American. He was raised by his White mother and Grandfather.
He went to a historicaly White college and he is dick cheney's cousin.
I'm tired of people calling him black, as if that's all he is. but I do agree with you on this topic.
breezyage 3 years ago
Well, Obama himself identifies as both black and biracial. So, there's no reason to deny his self-identification. While I haven't read his autobiography, it isn't unlikely that his experience in the US was that of a black man. When people see him on the street, they won't think "oh that guy is biracial" or "oh, that guy isn't the descendant of West African slaves," they will more than likely treat him like a black man. That may have had something to do with how he identifies today.
PrometheanFlame 3 years ago
Also, I must say that black in and of itself is not a simple or monolithic identity. It's no secret that black encompasses many mixtures, much more than a white identity. It's almost a historical fact that whiteness is defined by what it is not, and blackness has usually been rather inclusive; that's why many black people exhibit different phenotypes, though that variety needn't always imply some mixture. Even Africans are very diverse in appearance without an implied mixture.

get over it. why should you care? he has no problem with it, since he calls himself black, & identifies as such. There are many blacks with 2 black parents who attend predominantly white schools & have white family members down the line. whats your point? people call him black because he calls himself such. you act as though if "black" were all he was itd be a negative thing. you have issues.
WhySoGr33n 3 years ago
That's not what he's saying, watch the video again to understand. He means people are only accrediting him as that not based on his skill and work towards his accomplishments but instead many are focusing on his race alone. And he should and can care, everyone in our society should care, because it is affecting the people in this country. He has the right to speak about his views that are obviously correct.
