  • I can't believe they got a standing ovation lol. This guy really is unrefined when it comes to classicla music. But got to love the white people for trying to appreciate it. By god I love the liberals. Now only if the rednecks could stop bombing other countries I'd be at peace with the US

  • The play fight between the performing musicians is traditional. Really adds to the performance

  • I wish they'd given more time to the tabla player. Some of the tabla solos are absolutely amazing

  • this is complete shit...

  • What does "Sani-San" mean?

  • Loved his hypnotic music

  • I loved him because he is not only promoting Indian classical but he is showing Indian Culture to global World............................best of luck mate!!!!!

Hope get a chance to meet you in this life somewhere

  • interesting mess.... barely passable. poor grip on notes at times, and amateur improv where the drums are lost at times as to what tempo he slips into (abruptly, with no grace at all). the accompanying musicians seem sleepy, while this guy seems more intent on seeming a star than being musically charismatic.

  • @unhingedmind your just a fuckface fuck off

  • @justvibe110 ha! well, i did for three months. then for some reason, you decided to waste comment space with a poorly-spelt, aimless jibberish as response to something i wrote. this is a TED video on youtube. people comment freely on what they think of posts. if you don't like it, life is just that tough. india has far better musicians and a deeper talent pool than this piss-poor representation, and i stick by that. so you can fuck right off as well! ...aw bless, you must be a child :)

  • @unhingedmind your right..

  • THOSE PANTS

  • It's like the guy from the Mummy.

  • listened to this whiled fried to hell. just call me Aladin. lol

  • I, mr.Vishal am from yours truly america and i personally love your music, the accordian is simply perfection. The way you mesmerized me was a true euphoria, please keep more music flying through the doors, and to everybody who likes him peace be with you, STOP THE WARS :D!!!!!

  • This is AMAZING. What's that that Vishal is playing, though? The box-like accordian?

  • @DanteMoodyFilms accordian only.

  • derbouka! woow! ;)

  • I wish you would come and perform here in Pakistan, you are simply amazing Mr.Vishal!!

  • wah kya baat hay...

  • THAT IS AWESOME... VERY HAPPY... VERY FUN..... LOVE IT

  • maalam brahim! this is brahim fribgane on oud, who is one of the most amazing musicians around.

  • Vishal sahab, you are the BEST !

  • No words to praise this!!!!! Geo Vishal Vaid

  • You are best Vishal Vaid in the world.

Thanks from a afghan boye :)

  • Band is awesome.....singer bugs the shit out of me

  • amazing Vishal, so true to your wonderful form and talent....hope you return to TO soon and we can have some more mesmerizing evenings with your classical repertoire...

  • This is incredibly similar to Jazz in its improvisational quirks. I'm blown away really, this is musically of the same impressive caliber as someone like Michel Camilo or Chick Corea when it comes to emotional expression.

  • basically,

the sa sa re ga pa ma etc etc. etc.

are the indian classical version of doh re me fa so la tee doh found in western classical music

  • its really Good but after 05:12 what the hell is he doing sa sa ni sa sa ni oh come on Hell!! i was really disappointed ... i mean it should be a classic which it was from the start but i dunno what the hell happened to vishal after 05:12 ........only ...... sa sa ni sa sa ni sa sa ni...........

  • How is this hypnotic?

  • This reminds me of a Dead can Dance track. Even though, really, they were imitating this style, not the other way around. Cool stuff.

  • the lyrics are actually notes. Musical notes in hindi. So he's singing the note his voice is actually in. Smthing they do a lot in indian classical music :)

  • question: why is this here

  • Anyone else feel like getting stoned whilst listening to this?

  • @Cocotte123321 DUDE I'm FUCKing high right now, listening to this!!!. The drum sounds, just sucked me in.

  • @Cocotte123321 i can't hear anything else when i'm listening this

  • I believe it's punjabi

  • this is not punjabi, I'm punjabi.

  • nice, i like it

  • haha 3:05, he stops i dunno on purpose or not.

  • Comment removed

  • hypnotic is not a verb. you are stupid.

  • Love this!

  • is this farsi or indian ?

  • Great love ur work Vishal Vaid!

  • man I love this note

  • Fanfukntastic.

  • masallah ky bat hai

  • if you enjoyed this.. try Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.. nothing compares to him..

  • The blue light that is shining on them, makes them look like they all have blue auras. :)

  • This reminds me of Spanish flamenco music played by the gypsies. It sounds like it might have an Arab influence.

  • doesn't sound like flamenco, flamenco is passion, and u feel the passion inside, this is not this way, like u said sounds more like arab music. Anyway, I enjoyed it much =)

  • hear hear.

  • why do you think white people are gullible

  • I don't know alot about Indian Classical Music, but I have had good fortune to have seen Vishal perform live in NYC & Omega Institute. I have heard him introduce this song, and its based on the sounds of the scale (ga, ma, pa, sa, etc. I don't know them all..) Instead of words, the "singer" recites the name of the note. "Vishal Vaid has trained in the traditional art of ghazal (an ancient form of poetry, often performed in song) since he was three years old. " His tabla player is awesome.

  • purifying

  • I guess he's trying to mix Indian Classical, Sufi and Hip-hop...

  • I guess this is one of those things where you just had to have been there

  • Amazing Music!

  • pretty ordinary performance...

  • that was true music session,,,,,,,,,,such an image you receive when you close your eyes and try to envision what you are listening to. Wonderful

  • the human voice is as much an instrument as any other

  • amazing performance

i still don't get why TED videos which are not about numbers or world theories got disparaged. probably the authors of these talks enjoy this ones the most. not only with his brains but with his whole being.

  • I assume you mean "brains" metaphorically.

  • "brains" methaphorically could be an interpretation. maybe a more accurated one would be with both sides of the brain instead of using only/mostly the left side.

  • This is why TED is great, because they show so many things from so many fields. I loved the performance. Constructive criticism is welcomed, but please don't share bitter comments with the world. 5 stars to TED

  • I get the feeling of that the singer is unwanted by rest of the group and that his taking to much space.. I would appreciate it more if it was an instrumental performance.. They are good musicians but.. yeah hope u get what i mean.. !?

  • Geez. I went from Rebecca Saxe to this? Now that's disapointing.

  • beautiful

  • 4:01 --> Potato

  • sun sunnyyy sun sunnyyy sun sunnyyy

  • you know ted talks can't be all al gore and Dan Dennett, a lot of it is just entertainment I.e. the E

  • this music is SHIT! It is clear this guy is here because of his connections and not necessarily his talents. His clumsy, unrefined and un-practiced style can be compared to a water buffalo trying to dance Bharat Natyam. Just _NOT_ going to happen.

But of course it is going to appeal to clueless white people who are listening to him and feeling all "hypnotized" and spiritual and sh*t ...

  • Music is about sharing a view. I loved it.

  • yea

  • cuz they are white

  • perhaps it is not to your taste, but you can at least respect the artists, as artists, for the way that they influence sound.

  • wid all due respect to evryone i went the the concert of OVERLOAD a paki band..their so called tune DHAMAAL was far more hypnotic...even people from other nationalities were present including arabs, american and british as it was at univeristy complex all of em were hynotised...cant forget that day....peace

  • Welll..... They'd better listen to Pete Namlook and have some Organic BC pot (thanks Misha Glenny for the tip!) if the TEDsters really feel like spacing out :)

  • This is a TED session. In what way is this an "idea"?

  • Britny couldnt come, this guy was next on the list.

  • yeah and thank integrity for that

  • i liked it. i bet they could play all day!

  • is that the guy from mummy

  • what's so hypnotic about this crap

  • I agree it cant be called hypnotic but then, it cant be called crap either :)

  • wtf...why would they bring this guy...there are plenty of far more talented practitioners in pakistan and india....

  • I agree.. the music was tolerable at best and there are better and far more talented musicians in India and Pakistan who can mesmerise us with their music..

  • He got Micheal Phelps to play the bass?

  • its gud, not that different.

  • acid music ! :D

  • Amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • not bad, but I don't really see what's so hypnotic about it...

  • Its ok for you to not understand all music but lashing out at something you dont understand to cover up your incompetens is just childish. Embrace the unknown so you can have a better understanding of it all, music is anything you want it to be.

  • A passable performance, but the vocalist really dragged the group down in terms of quality, and the tabla player didn't really seem to be anything special (though I'm not much of an expert of Indian percussion, to be fair). Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but it would be nice to see TED hold hold musicians the the same kind of standards they hold speakers to.

  • I disagree. The vocalist seemed to have great timing and hit every note as far as I could tell.

  • Love music, loved this.*

  • oh my fucking this is amazing so beautiful the instruments and just the singing just because cant understand wat he is doesnt mean a thing i look up lyrics. I literally got chills hearing this, this is music. I love music like this ive become a complete fan after hearing this. Bravo Vishal Vaid.

  • Would you believe it! his song lyrics are actually just Do,Re, fa.. in Hindi, an Indian language! In a way, it actually adds to the impact of the music.

  • Really that is surprising lol, but either way its a great song.

  • Trolled

  • I wish TED became TD

  • Damn this is boring. Well, at least I only wasted 2 minutes of my life for giving it a chance.

  • I dont get why this is on TED. I mean I have nothing against the music, I just dont see how it is interesting enough to be on TED.

  • TED stands for technology ENTERTAINMENT and design

also to get invited to TED you gotta do something impressive,or be rich they dont descriminate beyond that point

  • I see, I study in an art college so I see this type of thing allot.

Its good but like all things can get a bit tiresome, so that is probably why I dont think its all that impressive. Not that I could do any better haha.

  • I finally figured out why the prolonged finalle works: the audience get frustrated and the cheer builds up inside them so they're a lot louder when they finally get to aplaud.

  • Idiots, stop comparing a musical experience to marriage or food. In food, every experiment (taste/bite) is consistent with the last. You can make an informed decision right after the first taste. Music evolves, it changes, and by this change alone, it creates a unique feeling. Music is about the big picture, not the details.

And stop criticizing others' logic, while not even being able to form an accurate analogy.

  • This is so not what I tune into TedTalks for, but I did like it. It was a musical form I have little experience with. Kinda mind expanding for that reason... The best part for me was the first 5 minutes or so, after that it started to drag a little for me. Oh, and for the guy who complained that he wasted 13 minutes watching the whole thing, I have no sympathy. Your browser has a "back button".

  • So.... what is it that he's saying? And what does it mean...?

  • sa re ga ma pa = do re me fa so la

    He's not saying anything :D

  • if they got 5.1 SS they would know.

  • That's just the India version of the musical solfège. Commonly used in classical and semi-classical tracks for compositions that originate out of some fundamental 'raagas'.

  • 6:48

  • dude repeating same words over and over totally ruins otherwise good music

  • ugh i hate it when i start reading comments.

  • No kidding! What a sophomoric argument to be found on a TEDtalks vid, huh?

  • I liked it

  • Strooth

  • bakwaas...

    nothing hypnotic about it..

  • Sun suane sun suane!

  • I liked the instrumental part of this song. The singing of Vishal Vaid was a bit unproffesional.

  • INSANE solo through 8:00-like 9:30

  • This kind of music isn't my cup of tea, but it still gave me a few chills.

  • Again, people would think I am a hater. But this is actually average music. And the TED audience stand up to applaud almost anything nowadays.

  • I am an indian, with a fair bit of understanding of Indian music and middle eastern music. And this was a very very amateur performance. Whenever it comes to music, TED does not know who to showcase and who not to.

  • As with most other vids, I believe that TED should just disable comments. The release of these videos to the public is a PRIVILEGE, and people should be respectful of anything they see here, or at least take things with a grain of salt. Personally, I don't think people who just write "this sucks" should even have access to TED videos. Its meant for you to learn, not to entertain you.

  • While I mostly agree, the last statement goes against the middle letter of the TED Acronym.

  • Doesn't matter what language it is, I dug it. Made me wanna go get a bong.

  • Not bad at all for improv.

  • Sonny sucks !

  • way too many western influences. They basicaly play pop with exotic instruments.

  • There was nothing hypnotic about it. novice at best

  • never really enjoyed the musical aspects of TED....

    it was alright

  • If it was so bad, why did you sit through 13 minutes of it moron? Turn the damn thing off if you don't like it and quit complaining.

  • Such a weak argument. To make an informed decision, you HAVE to sit through the whole thing. After that, it's perfectly ok to say "After having viewed the entire video, I conclude I don't like it."

  • Who's talking to you? I wasn't.

  • That's code for "You are absolutely right and I have no way to refute your argument." Much appreciated.

  • "To make an informed decision, you HAVE to sit through the whole thing."

    That's code for I'm a ignorant asshole.

  • make sure you don't marry the wrong person then. you see the fallacy of your argument now?

  • the wrong person...what makes them wrong? have no regrets..? carpe deim etc.

  • Your analogy doesn't accurately describe the situation. What I said was this: How can I say, "I do not like this video." if I have not viewed it in its entirety. As the "entirety" of a marriage results in one or the other's death, I obviously can't make the same claim.

  • Comment removed

  • According to your logic, people are not right to divorce since they have not "watched it until the end". Do you really think that for yourself?

  • "To make an informed decision, you HAVE to sit through the whole thing."

No actually you don't If I don't like something someon cooked for me I'm not going to eat the whiole thing so i can REALLY decide I don't like it. I'm going to stop eating it because I don't like it. Same as if I'm watching, listening, or reading something I don't like. I turn I don't watch, listen to, or read it anymore. No one forced the moron to sit through 13 minutes if the video but him, so he wasted his own time.

  • Thats right i thought it it was wonderful lol. People sure complain a lot i dont like this, so why listen? Its like food if its not good why eat it. Instead of complaining bout how bad it is just dont eat it.

  • i agree, but also if the person doesnt like it, first off can they get close to what these guys are doing? and if so, they should take it upon themselves to make music "better" than this. =)

  • Fuck yeah those dam complainers really who would not like these guys?

  • interesting music. u need to have a special background, a specific understanding of the scales of this music to comprehend it. If u dont like, dont shit ur pants yet.

It is really very classical in composure. It is like asking an african tribesman to appreciate operah.,

  • dont talk bullshit, you dont need understanding to listen to and like music. does spouting that shit make you feel more elite?

my god, its just MUSIC. like it or leave it. but dont act like its more complicated than quantum physics.

  • the world is not not black and white like u put it. "its music like it or leave it"does not apply here. I am not an elite and do not intend to broadcast such rubbish. neither did i say this music is more complicated than quantum physics. Interesting idea nonetheless.

  • You sound like a twat. Just saying.

  • amazing performance in my view...i enjoyed it a lot = ]

  • Like suedip15 said, this isn't the best example of this genre, still I think they're pretty good, a nice listen.

I'm not sure what the guitarish instrument is called, but I can't help noticing that some of the riffs he's doing, especially in the beginning, has a lot in common with what you find in melodic death metal.

  • I'm not exactly sure, but the instrument at (2:05) looks like an oud to me. It's more of a middle eastern than south asian instrument in my experience, but it sounds nice.

  • how is this hypnotic??????

  • TED is exaggerating again

  • beautiful
