@20conv A 14k broad Visconti. Or, if you'd like something (significantly) cheaper, a Sheaffer Prelude with a broad nib. I think my Sheaffer Prelude has one of the broadest and wettest nibs I own (if you're interested, check out my review of that pen for a writing sample).
I have a Carène that I bought in the late '90s, and it has never worked properly, despite my sending it in to Jaynestown for adjustment or replacement three times. It has always had either too much or too little ink flow, and the nib has never moved smoothly on the page. It looks and feels great, but I think that Waterman quality went down the toilet when the company was taken over by Gillette or whoever owns it now.
very very nice review and the detail of the pen is fascinating. May I ask you some question? I have one pelikan m400 with M nib but I never try any waterman pen before so witch one is smoother. Thank you.
@pauldavid30 That's a difficult question. I only have one Pelikan (M205 DUO), which is very smooth. That is a stainless steel nib, however, and the Carène has an 18k gold nib. Generally, gold nibs are smoother than steel nibs (although there are some exceptions: the Faber-Castell E-Motion has an ultra-smooth steel nib). I have a bunch of steel Waterman nibs too, and they're all pretty smooth (except for the F nib on my Apostrophe). So actually, I'm not sure!
Nicely done. I'm a fan too and have two carènes at the moment. Great pens and AFAIKall of them are all lacquered brass. The one you mentioned as resin was probably black lacquer with a gunmetal cap and probably weighed the same. In any case the finish on your pen is wonderful. Thanks for the video.
I own four Carene fountain pens and I always worry about dropping them on the floor, as the nibs are fused to the section and cannot be replaced without replacing the whole nib-section unit (which is pricey---over 100 CAD, where I live). A lovely pen design and a nice YouTube review. Cheers!
@retro51fan Indeed, these are very nice pens. Do you have different versions, or is there one version you liked so much that you bought four of them :-)?
@sbrebrown I have two purples--one with a F nib and another with a Stub nib (a gift) as well as one in red (my favourite colour) and another in the lovely Amber Marine colour (which I couldn't resist---the finish is superb!). I like the way they look and the balance of posted pen in the hand, and all (except for one) have been smooth writers. I adjusted the one with the wonky nib and now carry that pen with me in my EDC case.
Thanks for that...will have a look for one!

What's your recommendation for a broad wet nib?

is this puppy smoother than your "Oprah" elements?

@arweiss21 It's close, but I think the Opera Elements is smoother!

@atosov I'm sorry to hear that. I think these are nice pens, but of course, they should work!

@sbrebrown Did you know that Carène is a greek work (Καρίνα) Karina
askk1996 1 month ago
@askk1996 I did not know that - and Καρίνα means keel too, right? And thanks for pointing out the name of the steel!
sbrebrown 1 month ago
@sbrebrown yes Καρίνα means keel
