Blake died today, and this is my favorite movie of his. It may not be his best, but you're right, every scene and character comes right from his heart (or spleen). There are so many inside references it boggles the mind.
Shelly Winters in full blown horrorshow mode, the dead guy on the beach, Larry Storch(!) as a Hollywood Guru, Holden's suicide speech, a cross dressing Robert Vaughn, THE MUSIC MAN Robt. Preston as a Dr. Feelgood!
Yes, I remember this movie. I haven't seen it in a long time. Thanks for the refresher. My father LOVED the Pink Panther movies. He also enjoyed 10 and the antics of Dudley Moore. I also remember when they added the 2nd floor screen to the Palace Theater. I too thought it was pretty whacked.
My grandfather, Jimmy Clayton Spell, did the wiring for the lights in the old main theater way back in when. My dad really loved going to the movies. I remember watching a lot of movies as a child on the big screen there. Remember the big lighted clock at the lower right of the big screen?
This is Blake Edwards' best movie. It is put together with such verve, wit and style. Caustically funny. The theme: what goes around not only comes around, it does so six times harder. In his honorary Oscar speech, Edwards thanked his friends and his foes....he says he could not have done it without the foes: "I'm steamed and I going to prove you wrong." And boy did he with this stunning film
SOB is one of the most brilliant movies every made, in 3 part vignettes. Less elegant than Victor/Victoria, but a lot tighter and wickeder. Weekend at Bernie's is a lame ripoff of the last third of the movie.

An embarrassment of riches!
Good review. Just what I needed.
