Yes it would matter if he was a nazi ,considering all the evil these people stood for! Bowie however was never a nazi, I have tried golf but i am not a golfer!!
Do you think, the only reason for his trip to Germany was to provocate and make himself important? He came for his fans and not for worlds attention. He's an intelligent man, who never would have thoughts like these and he simply is openminded towards many things, like other cultures, languages and people, except of ' real' facism.
His music should join us together! And do I really have to remind you, he's marriaged to a black woman and even has a child with her. Never knew, he had any problems with different nationalities, including germans. He lived there for a few years, and so Germany is quite familar to him. He said it's the right place for someone like him, does not mean, he hints on his' fascistic attitude' !
Does anybody here know what a nazi actually is or are we just living in the wrong time? Maybe you honestly think, Hitler still is alive-.-;
So let me inform you about the fact, he's gladly dead for more than a half century, trust me I know it, because I live in Germany. You can find fascim everywhere in the world even today, nationality doesn't matter.
And you also can find people like you and me, everywhere in the world, who just love Bowies music.
There is no proof if he was a nazi or not. If you cut are recording a live video where there is salutes to the crowd, then you're more than likely going to get a "nazi salute" if you cut a frame in the middle of the wave, but for people to bring that up is no different than a child waving it's arms for attention. The Thin White Duke kicked fucking ASS, and everything said to badmouth this record don't mean shit. Station to Station is in my top 3 Bowie albums
@bpanni96 I think he said something like fascism may be good for England, which I'm not sure is supporting of fascism.. sometimes even horrible things could possibly have good effects

a british music paper did a freeze frame of this personal appearence [photograph from another angle] and it looked like a nazi salute, it wasn't, although he did make 'pro fascist' comments around the same time, which he retracted in later years.
the reality is so much duller than the myth, isn't it?!
What a wank re: "omg was he doing a nazi salute" etc. ... WHO CARES!!! His history of adventurous and daring self expression, his relations with people of all colours and persuasions shows he is a very very progressive person. end of story.
@megaredtle - moi? ignorant? I've been a political activist for "left" wing" progressive issues for over 20 years. I've received threats of violence and death from the ignorant for my pro-multicultural and political songs on the radio. I'm repulsed by racism, sexism, homophobia, species-ism etc. I'm trans, bi & I've been targetted by ignorance all my life. I think it's silly where people look for something to hate in something that's innocent - like here with Bowie's arm movements.
@EYEmusique i'm not talking about bowie's arm movements. if you're so intolerant of racism or homophobia then how can you respect nazism influenced in music?
This was of course a shitty Nazi salut. Read the stuff he said, at this time...
He try to but it in the right sence and I don't believe he was a faschist, but these picture are hard to take. Not only the salut...look at the black clothes, the car, the interviews.
I wonder if the people forgive a less charimatic, talented, good looking man this shit.
Itook me time and some explanation, to get over it.
the salute drama - all started with a still photo, taken of his profile, in an open top car, taken out of context. however he had suggested an extreme right wing government would come to power in the uK and at that time in the uk we had a resurgent extreme right wing paryt rising in the polls. but bowie always said stuff he didnt mean to shock eg the i am gay actually comment when he was at best bisexual and married!
I know that might sound kinda strange, but I think every person who has once been cheered so madly by the crowd, has felt like making a nazi salute - Lennon, with the Beatles, did too. Maybe this gesture was just an ironic answer to the crowd's meaningless enthusiasm.
As an artist Bowie can experiment with fascist imagery if he likes(even if he was misunderstood at the time). Thats the problem these days, everyone's so scared of offending somebody else that nobody tries anything "controversial" anymore. Its easier for bands to be inoffensive and say "yeah im against climate change and all for world peace". Fuck off. What happened to being dangerous and following your artistic instincts. Music must change or die..you cant even fucking smoke on TV anymore!
Sorry I don't know the exactly deep meanings behind the lyrics. I think 'Station To Station' is the transition from Bowie's 'Young Americans' to 'Berlin Trilogy'(Low, "Heroes", Lodger). His voice is best between the two eras above. While he performed in his alter ego of Thin White Duke, some people think Bowie is Narcissism at this period cos he's so cool & beautiful as well.
cool man. ahead of all fashions. fresh back from man who fell to earth with an outlandish haircut for the time. looks as though he might take off when he shakes the guard's hand. biglol. A true one off who Britain should be proud of!!!!!!!!!!
Bowie's alter ego for that period is mysterious. It had to be something with his Station To Station record. I don't mean his strange commen about Hitler is correct. But the idea of pure Aryan is just a illusionous superstition. Just like Nietzsche's creation of superhuman. Bowie created his own vision of another kind of superhuman.
I'm sure I read somewhere that Ziggy, Iggy and (Lizzy?) Lou Reed used to get fueled up on acid and walk round London dressed as nazis... Anyone got details?
Stop tahr ole '70s salute crap....christ , I thought this was all past and forgotten about....Move on everyone, lets enjoy what we have and what is true....Just for one day.....watcha say?
there's a cine film of this floating around my brothers house. He's the chap with the salute. He's 47 now and still a Bowie nut, but won't post. Tempted to give his email out so you can all pester him. He also worked with John Watson from the Mannish Boys..... lots to tell. but he's a quiet chap.
This clip is the definite proof: David Bowie just waved to his fans. Even the black musicians, who worked for him, pointed out, that he´s never been a nazi. He just said some strange things about Hitler, when he was full of cocaine.
I remember reading about it in the music press when it happened and they made it seem like the Nuremberg Rally. Looking at it here, there only seems to be about 40 people waiting for him. Slightly oversold?
The area where Bowie signed the autographs for that train driver and where the crowd was is nothing like that now, it has since been rebuilt with a 1st floor shopping area above it and now concrete pillars and darkness dominates no natural light gets in at all! Horrible.
The reality of what happened that day was: Bowie was supposed to be addressing the crowd over a PA system, but that didn't happen. And then more than 90% of us in the crowd (who weren't right at the front) couldn't even see him.
My favourite Bowie period. A mad genius, he looks amazing as well. He was intersted in the Nazi,s, so what? I find that period of history interesting as well. Imagine if nobody was interested in the Nazi,s? then no-one would be aware of the crimes they committed. Bowie was interested in imagery. As for the salute? Not even worth mentioning....
I think Bowie's interest was the mysticism. Not the Nazi really. Apparently he mean Hitler is also a believer in mysticism. Bowie is always been interest in German philosophers like Nietzsche. Or the creator of black magic, Aleister Crowley. The later is also the interest of hippies since the 60s.

Why then did he create (through the medium of mime) the image of a swastika on stage at Wembley that very same week? Or was that just the photographers fault too? I would buy the reason of 'artistic expression' or 'poetic licence'.
I love Bowie, and the truth is the truth is the truth. It is just What's So... and likewise it's also SO WHAT.
So was he trying to make some kind of ironic statement about the political situation in England? I haven't read the stuff he said (that Sileah refers to in her comment).
