Beautiful scenery... i see Porter planes take off and land everyday from my apartment on Lakeshore. If I'm not mistaken, I think one has to take the ferry to get to the terminal... possibly a short ferry ride. I'm pretty sure this airport is booming with all the new routes Porter is doing.
The NDP failures and other socialists who want to close the island airport will tell you it's because of "air pollution" from the (turboprop) planes. But in reality, it's a deep-seeded hatred of flying, as flying is evil, something only "rich people" do. Air travel represents mechanical progress and capitalism, things frowned upon in the modern socialist state. They have also raked in the idiot fringe, people who live in a big city but compain about noise. Long live the city centre airport!
People in Canada do not live in igloos stupid americans! I live in toronto! My house is bigger than any house I have seen in the USA! I have been to Florida, new york, and south Carolina!

Most Canadians-a minority that are heavily influenced by US tv don't-but most Canadians call the country south the u.s. or the states. We don't really assign a whole continent to the one country. But you are right-Toronto is a major metro area & it looks like a lot of large cities in NA and the world.
But "America" most often refers to "The United States of America". There is no continent called "America". There are continents called "North America" and "South America", though.
when I visit Toronto, I never use plane as the source of transportation, cause it's only a 3-4 hours drive by my van, my dad usually takes me to Toronto from Sudbury where we live, to watch the Marlies, Raps, and Blue Jays.
Every airline orders the number of seats they want on a new plane. Porter's were ordered with 72 seats so they can have more legroom than the same exact plane with 78 seats on a one class basis. The plane can take off in 2,500 feet with a full load and Toronto Island airport has a 4,000 foot runway, so there is plenty of room. Air Berlin today announced an order for 20 Q400's,10 firm, with 76 seats each, which gives less legroom than Porter in the eaxact same plane. Lies will get u nowhere
You should get the facts straight. There aren't 72 seats on these planes because Porter had to remove them because the runway is too short for a full plane. (Doesn't sound safe to me). These planes are only averaging 28% full. And then there are all the free tickets that Porter gives out. What does the TPA make off them?
Social housing has nothing to do with any of this - that's just more stupid prattle.
Sorry in my other post that i was not clear. The $20 amount is for each passenger so for a fully loaded Porter Airlines Q400, that is 72 seats x $20 equals $1,440 for a one way flight and double that for a return flight. Yes, the feds raised the rate a few months ago by 33 percent as it used to be $15 a head.
These planes are never full, so this doesn't add up. In fact Porter had to remove seats because the runway is to short by about 500m for a full plane, so there aren't 72 seats. A full Q400 is not allowed to land at a runway as short as the Island Airport in the US. They don't pay rent on the land at the airport and everything is heavily subsidized by the feds - so your math doesn't work.
There are enough flights now as of the end of March of 2008 at $ 20 landing or takeoff to give the City of Toronto & the Federal government a very nice profit by the end of 2008. over the next 5 years, any past build uo or deficit will be overcome just when the city needs to money to pay for all the social housing and other wasteful programs.
Oh really? So why can't we see the books? Looks like you've been hoodwinked into believing that Porter is making money. They say they've made a profit so that creditors will invest more money in a money losing airport. No airline has succeeded there before and taxpayers have always had to subsidize it. Porter has received at least $110 million from the City, the Pork Authority and the feds at taxpayers' expense. they would have never survived otherwise - and they don't pay rent on the land.
Porter airlines showed a profit 8 months ago so your biased unnamed source is wrong. This plane is cheaper to buy than a jet of the same size so they can show a profit even if the plane is only 35 percent full. Many other airlines in North America are getting rid of their smaller jets in the past few months because they must be closer to 65 percent full to break even. It does not take any brains to know who is going to survive in 3, 5 or 10 years.
3)Investors added $125 million so Porter could pay cash for 4 planes.
With no debt, no lease or financing costs, gobs of taxpayer money, & a monopoly, Porter can show an operating profit -- even with load factors at 28%.
However, Porter, like its competitors, has yet to announce publicly its load factors.
Can Porter survive with its sub-standard Island Airport, limited parking, jammed into a residential area increasingly distressed by the airport's noise, pollution, and traffic? Add to that the fact that flying Porter is seen by so many as distasteful given its history of railroading a city that voted againts it.
How is an airplane landing at Toronto Island airport any more polluting than the hundreds of airplanes which fly directly over downtown on their way into and out of Pearson?
And how does the pollution from the island airport compare to the emmissions of thousands of cars on the Gardiner and Lakeshore every single day?
And by the way, how polluting is the ferry that you commute on every day?
CO2 emissions per-passenger kilometre travelled is at least 2x the amount produced by cars and six times the amount produced by trains and buses. These short haul flights target a market that would otherwise take the train, bus or car.
Short flights release far more CO2 than longer flights because it is necessary to burn large quantities of fuel to get the aircraft into the upper atmosphere. Many European environmentalists advocate that all short-haul flights should be banned.
Toronto residents voted against the expansion of Porter Airlines due to the air, noise and water pollution caused by the planes as they fly above a densely populated downtown core and waterfront. Is it fair that hundreds of thousands of Toronto residents have to breathe the air and hear the flights of these planes for a small number of people to fly directly above their homes? I pay taxes to live in Toronto, and my quality of life is severely compromised by this airline.
I live downtown as well- and the flights directly above where I live are noisy. This private airline is being funded by my federal tax money, which I think is incredibly unfair. This airline is more directly polluting to Toronto as it flies out of a central, densely populated residential and business section of Toronto - and is not flying out of an airport 28 kms away like Pearson. Also, the toxic jet fuel emissions go right into Lake Ontario. We do not need more smog or water pollution here.
your message is full of balony. The airplne pollution is tiny compared to the hundreds of thousands of cars drive around you at street level in this city already.. (all of which are also louder than any plane that has ever taken off from that airport too)
you really just sound like you're a tree-hugging hippy who doesn't like the private sector and will make up any reason to oppose "the man." Porter is an ambitious, profitable Canadian company - cheers on them.
Why do we need more noise and more pollution? Most intelligent people recognize the need to reduce greenhouse gases. Personally I don't think cars are a good thing either. I take public transport and ride a bicycle and refuse to own a car. I strive for a low carbon footprint. I don't go around labelling people I've never met.
I agree withIndium725. Why would anyine from Scarborough, Thornhill, Barrie, Hamilton, or Mississauga want to fly in or out of here when they could get stuck in downtown traffic?
Torontonians voted against airport expansion when they voted for Miller. This has been corruptly and undemocratically pushed through by the feds and the Toronto Port Authority.
Short haul flights are the most polluting, it takes so much energy to get the planes in the air.
This is an expensive chauffeur service subsidized by taxpayers for politicians.
I absolutely agree- in a time of global warming, this airline angers me to no end. I live underneath its flight paths, and I look up and just see a tremendous amount of noise and air pollution for a small amount of people to travel at my taxpaying expense.
So business travelers from Montreal wouldn't have to land at Pearson and take a 40 minute, $50 cabride to downtown. The socialists who govern Toronto hate the island airport, because they hate business. That's why the city is falling apart. Long live the island airport!
Well, theres not only business travelers that take flights on this plane, there may be people visiting their families or something, and most households are located around pearson airport not lakefront, so I don't think some guy living in Richmond Hill will enjoy his 1 1\2 hour car ride to pick up his family member so damn far at lake ontario, when he could have done 15 minutes IF the plane had it's hub at Pearson.
So he can fly into Pearson then - its only the 26th busiest airport on earth. The Island airport is a good link for in-and-out businesspeople and short-distance travelers who live downtown, not to mention a home base for general aviation and aviation enthusiasts.
I guess you have a point, but Porter is probably cheaper then Air Canada Jazz, so in a way it may affect some but then again will benefit the local business traveller
I think that's why it's there - the airport would've died without Porter coming in, and they sold it as a quick way to get to downtown TO rather than going out to Pearson.
The Island airport is great for business. Toronto's a massive city, to only have one airport would be silly - that leaves no room for competition.Porters doing a great thing by keeping that link and option open for Toronto travellers.
If there were truly room for competition, how was it that Jazz was allowed to be kick out of this airport, giving Porter a monopoly? Just a few back room deals maybe? How could it be good for business when it's so heavily subsidized? Bad for the city, bad for the waterfront, bad for quality of life.
You make a lot of assumptions. "bad for the city, bad for the waterfront, bad for the quality of lie.." none of which is true. The waterfront needs development and usage.. It actually improves the quality of life, creates jobs, and allows for another option when flying into Toronto.
It's very quiet too, I remember when it opened and protesters were out there protesting, they didn't even realize when the plane took off because they didn't hear it.
A study was carried out on the health impacts of the one-runway Santa Monica Regional Airport in California, which has traffic volumes comparable to those of the island airport. The study found that lifetime cancer risk for surrounding neighbourhoods, attributable to airport operations, is 22 times the Environmental Protection Agency standard.
So if you don't live in a neighborhood with an airport, you're safe? There are hundreds of causes of Cancer, so pick one.
Also, downtown Toronto is one of the safest areas of the city. Am I to move to Jane/Finch? Scarborough? Missisauga? Alll of which has 4 times higher gun violence then downtown? Either way, I guess us Torontonians are all fucked.
There are many studies showing increased negative health effects near airports. In Boston, across the Bay from Logan Airport a study revealed that the portion of the community closest to the airport has double the rate of asthma, allergies and respiratory disease, relative to the half of the community located furthest from the airport. The community of Winthrop was chosen because no other significant pollution generators, such as an expressway, have an impact on the community.
Hospital records in Seattle show that the community lying immediately downwind from the relatively small Sea-Tac Regional Airport has more than 50% higher asthma rates, 36% higher cancer rates and a substantially lower life expectancy than the Seattle average.
The waterfront doesn't need to become an industrial wasteland like the land around Pearson and most airports. The City has a plan for revitalization that includes parks and green space for everyone to enjoy. The airport expansion is a federal plan without regard for what the city of Toronto wants or needs.
The assumption that everyone wants and needs green spaces is overdone. Toronto has VASTS amounts of green spaces, just look at this cit from the CN Tower.. and last time i checked most of the Islans is still "green spaces"
so suck it up. The expansion is necessary for competition and good for the economy. The only reason why airlines failed in the past is because our socialist city council always gives them a hard time and doesn't appear to like economic progress.
If the airport allowed for true competition then Jazz wouldn't have been kicked out. The only reason this airline has gotten as far as it has is because of over $110 million in taxpayer subsidies. This a boondooggle for the TPA so that it can justify its existence.
If you take a closer look you will see a lot of highrises, parking lots, the Gardiner Expressway, and industry. The increase in population brought on by the condos means more green space is needed as these people don't have gardens, places to walk their dogs and need outdoor recreation space. An airport is an incapatible with population density, not only because of the planes and smog, but also because of the traffic congestion and parking issues.
look around Toronto. it's overflowing with greenspace. Even in the most densly populated portions of it. This is a city - not a park. it's a massive industrial and financial centre.. and people need to understand that. It's not all about "green space" all the time.
You think of it as a massive industrial and financial centre. To many it's also an arts and cultural centre, a home, a birthplace, a place to sail and go shopping and raise children and work and take the dog for a walk. It should be a place that is liveable, not an industrial wasteland, and not a place that we have to get into an SUV and drive for 2 hours to get some peace and fresh air.
Who said anything about SUV's or any of that? Having a nearby airport makes toronto more accessable and more competative to fly into. It still has parks, and towers, and shops, and walkable busy streets and you're rite, it's a major arts and culture centre. ..and it has a very convinient airport near the core.
..I didn't think that i would be on this topic so long. I'm not going to respond to anymore comments. we obviously don't agree.. but at least the airport is here to stay! =)
When/if there are 100 flights a day as Porter needs to actually turn a profit you will regret it. Nobody wants to live, invest or have a business near a busy airport.
You obviously don't read the paper and don't get that this airport has been so heavily subsidized and never has made a profit. There is nothing 'competitive' about it. It's a playground for a bunch of politcal cronies. this is the reason for proposed changes to the Canada Marine Act - so they can get more $ from the feds, as they know there flights to NY won't generate enough revenue.
Since opening in 1938 the Toronto Island Airport has never made a profit. Any commercial airlines have not succeeded. I doubt that Toronto profits from the handful of business folk who fly in for a couple of hours and are treated to tax subsidized free (usually empty) buses, ferries cappucinos, and internet connections. Boycott the island airport!
These planes are only flying at 28% full according to an insider bigwig at Porter Air. With 70 seats that's 20 passengers, many of those free tickets. Porter kicked out the competition when they booted Jazz, now having a monopoly on the Island Airport.
Toronto's so beautiful.

Another dumb comment.
TOguy2 3 years ago
You should get the facts straight. There aren't 72 seats on these planes because Porter had to remove them because the runway is too short for a full plane. (Doesn't sound safe to me). These planes are only averaging 28% full. And then there are all the free tickets that Porter gives out. What does the TPA make off them?
Social housing has nothing to do with any of this - that's just more stupid prattle.
Flyingpollutesearth 3 years ago 2
How the fuck is social housing stupid, without it thousands of families would be homeless or a whole lot poorer having to pay market rent
mcguinnesseoin 3 years ago
Sorry in my other post that i was not clear. The $20 amount is for each passenger so for a fully loaded Porter Airlines Q400, that is 72 seats x $20 equals $1,440 for a one way flight and double that for a return flight. Yes, the feds raised the rate a few months ago by 33 percent as it used to be $15 a head.
CREDITS4CARBON 3 years ago
These planes are never full, so this doesn't add up. In fact Porter had to remove seats because the runway is to short by about 500m for a full plane, so there aren't 72 seats. A full Q400 is not allowed to land at a runway as short as the Island Airport in the US. They don't pay rent on the land at the airport and everything is heavily subsidized by the feds - so your math doesn't work.
TOguy2 3 years ago
There are enough flights now as of the end of March of 2008 at $ 20 landing or takeoff to give the City of Toronto & the Federal government a very nice profit by the end of 2008. over the next 5 years, any past build uo or deficit will be overcome just when the city needs to money to pay for all the social housing and other wasteful programs.
CREDITS4CARBON 3 years ago
Flyingpollutesearth 3 years ago
Porter airlines showed a profit 8 months ago so your biased unnamed source is wrong. This plane is cheaper to buy than a jet of the same size so they can show a profit even if the plane is only 35 percent full. Many other airlines in North America are getting rid of their smaller jets in the past few months because they must be closer to 65 percent full to break even. It does not take any brains to know who is going to survive in 3, 5 or 10 years.
CREDITS4CARBON 3 years ago
It was the CFO of Porter who said the planes average 28% full. Porter claims to be making a profit. How?
1)Porter was given a monopoly at Island Airport from the TO Pork Authority, by kicking out Jazz
2) The feds gave Porter $20 million for its untested claim for damages for the cancellation of the bridge.
TOguy2 3 years ago
and
3)Investors added $125 million so Porter could pay cash for 4 planes.
With no debt, no lease or financing costs, gobs of taxpayer money, & a monopoly, Porter can show an operating profit -- even with load factors at 28%.
However, Porter, like its competitors, has yet to announce publicly its load factors.
TOguy2 3 years ago
Can Porter survive with its sub-standard Island Airport, limited parking, jammed into a residential area increasingly distressed by the airport's noise, pollution, and traffic? Add to that the fact that flying Porter is seen by so many as distasteful given its history of railroading a city that voted againts it.
TOguy2 3 years ago
How is an airplane landing at Toronto Island airport any more polluting than the hundreds of airplanes which fly directly over downtown on their way into and out of Pearson?
And how does the pollution from the island airport compare to the emmissions of thousands of cars on the Gardiner and Lakeshore every single day?
And by the way, how polluting is the ferry that you commute on every day?
yootoob22 4 years ago
CO2 emissions per-passenger kilometre travelled is at least 2x the amount produced by cars and six times the amount produced by trains and buses. These short haul flights target a market that would otherwise take the train, bus or car.
Short flights release far more CO2 than longer flights because it is necessary to burn large quantities of fuel to get the aircraft into the upper atmosphere. Many European environmentalists advocate that all short-haul flights should be banned.
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
You assume that I live on the Island?
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
Toronto residents voted against the expansion of Porter Airlines due to the air, noise and water pollution caused by the planes as they fly above a densely populated downtown core and waterfront. Is it fair that hundreds of thousands of Toronto residents have to breathe the air and hear the flights of these planes for a small number of people to fly directly above their homes? I pay taxes to live in Toronto, and my quality of life is severely compromised by this airline.
TorontoCitizen 4 years ago
No it doesn't. I live downtown, and i've never been bothered AT ALL by this airport
You kind of sound like a drama queen. and you don't represent all toronto citizens.
3461167 4 years ago
I live downtown as well- and the flights directly above where I live are noisy. This private airline is being funded by my federal tax money, which I think is incredibly unfair. This airline is more directly polluting to Toronto as it flies out of a central, densely populated residential and business section of Toronto - and is not flying out of an airport 28 kms away like Pearson. Also, the toxic jet fuel emissions go right into Lake Ontario. We do not need more smog or water pollution here.
TorontoCitizen 4 years ago
your message is full of balony.
3461167 4 years ago
Why do we need more noise and more pollution? Most intelligent people recognize the need to reduce greenhouse gases. Personally I don't think cars are a good thing either. I take public transport and ride a bicycle and refuse to own a car. I strive for a low carbon footprint. I don't go around labelling people I've never met.
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
of course you do. everyone labels everyone, it's human nature.
3461167 4 years ago
You do not know that Porter is profitable. So far it has only thirved because of federal subsidies ind investment.

truedanielg 4 years ago
I agree withIndium725. Why would anyine from Scarborough, Thornhill, Barrie, Hamilton, or Mississauga want to fly in or out of here when they could get stuck in downtown traffic?
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
Torontonians voted against airport expansion when they voted for Miller. This has been corruptly and undemocratically pushed through by the feds and the Toronto Port Authority.
Short haul flights are the most polluting, it takes so much energy to get the planes in the air.
This is an expensive chauffeur service subsidized by taxpayers for politicians.
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
I absolutely agree- in a time of global warming, this airline angers me to no end. I live underneath its flight paths, and I look up and just see a tremendous amount of noise and air pollution for a small amount of people to travel at my taxpaying expense.
TorontoCitizen 4 years ago
Beautiful. I've got to get me on that plane.

ajtigger 4 years ago
cause its cheaper to fly out of city center and its alot faster. try flying with em and you'll know why.
gustind 4 years ago
who doesnt it just land at pearson? why did they make the hub at Toronto city airport?
Iridium725 4 years ago
So business travelers from Montreal wouldn't have to land at Pearson and take a 40 minute, $50 cabride to downtown. The socialists who govern Toronto hate the island airport, because they hate business. That's why the city is falling apart. Long live the island airport!
manhattan85 4 years ago
Well, theres not only business travelers that take flights on this plane, there may be people visiting their families or something, and most households are located around pearson airport not lakefront, so I don't think some guy living in Richmond Hill will enjoy his 1 1\2 hour car ride to pick up his family member so damn far at lake ontario, when he could have done 15 minutes IF the plane had it's hub at Pearson.
Iridium725 4 years ago
So he can fly into Pearson then - its only the 26th busiest airport on earth. The Island airport is a good link for in-and-out businesspeople and short-distance travelers who live downtown, not to mention a home base for general aviation and aviation enthusiasts.
manhattan85 4 years ago
I guess you have a point, but Porter is probably cheaper then Air Canada Jazz, so in a way it may affect some but then again will benefit the local business traveller
Iridium725 4 years ago
I think that's why it's there - the airport would've died without Porter coming in, and they sold it as a quick way to get to downtown TO rather than going out to Pearson.
manhattan85 4 years ago
The Island airport is great for business. Toronto's a massive city, to only have one airport would be silly - that leaves no room for competition.Porters doing a great thing by keeping that link and option open for Toronto travellers.
3461167 4 years ago
Yeah..hopefully it will prosper. I was just wondering..have you heard anything about the closing of Buttonville Airport?
Iridium725 4 years ago
If there were truly room for competition, how was it that Jazz was allowed to be kick out of this airport, giving Porter a monopoly? Just a few back room deals maybe? How could it be good for business when it's so heavily subsidized? Bad for the city, bad for the waterfront, bad for quality of life.
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago

How is cancer good for quality of life?
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
So if you don't live in a neighborhood with an airport, you're safe? There are hundreds of causes of Cancer, so pick one.
Also, downtown Toronto is one of the safest areas of the city. Am I to move to Jane/Finch? Scarborough? Missisauga? Alll of which has 4 times higher gun violence then downtown? Either way, I guess us Torontonians are all fucked.
kimball99 4 years ago
There are many studies showing increased negative health effects near airports. In Boston, across the Bay from Logan Airport a study revealed that the portion of the community closest to the airport has double the rate of asthma, allergies and respiratory disease, relative to the half of the community located furthest from the airport. The community of Winthrop was chosen because no other significant pollution generators, such as an expressway, have an impact on the community.
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
Hospital records in Seattle show that the community lying immediately downwind from the relatively small Sea-Tac Regional Airport has more than 50% higher asthma rates, 36% higher cancer rates and a substantially lower life expectancy than the Seattle average.
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
The waterfront doesn't need to become an industrial wasteland like the land around Pearson and most airports. The City has a plan for revitalization that includes parks and green space for everyone to enjoy. The airport expansion is a federal plan without regard for what the city of Toronto wants or needs.
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
The assumption that everyone wants and needs green spaces is overdone. Toronto has VASTS amounts of green spaces, just look at this cit from the CN Tower.. and last time i checked most of the Islans is still "green spaces"
so suck it up. The expansion is necessary for competition and good for the economy. The only reason why airlines failed in the past is because our socialist city council always gives them a hard time and doesn't appear to like economic progress.
3461167 4 years ago
If the airport allowed for true competition then Jazz wouldn't have been kicked out. The only reason this airline has gotten as far as it has is because of over $110 million in taxpayer subsidies. This a boondooggle for the TPA so that it can justify its existence.
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
If you take a closer look you will see a lot of highrises, parking lots, the Gardiner Expressway, and industry. The increase in population brought on by the condos means more green space is needed as these people don't have gardens, places to walk their dogs and need outdoor recreation space. An airport is an incapatible with population density, not only because of the planes and smog, but also because of the traffic congestion and parking issues.
TOguy2 4 years ago
look around Toronto. it's overflowing with greenspace. Even in the most densly populated portions of it. This is a city - not a park. it's a massive industrial and financial centre.. and people need to understand that. It's not all about "green space" all the time.
3461167 4 years ago
You think of it as a massive industrial and financial centre. To many it's also an arts and cultural centre, a home, a birthplace, a place to sail and go shopping and raise children and work and take the dog for a walk. It should be a place that is liveable, not an industrial wasteland, and not a place that we have to get into an SUV and drive for 2 hours to get some peace and fresh air.
TOguy2 4 years ago 4
Who said anything about SUV's or any of that? Having a nearby airport makes toronto more accessable and more competative to fly into. It still has parks, and towers, and shops, and walkable busy streets and you're rite, it's a major arts and culture centre. ..and it has a very convinient airport near the core.
..I didn't think that i would be on this topic so long. I'm not going to respond to anymore comments. we obviously don't agree.. but at least the airport is here to stay! =)
3461167 4 years ago
When/if there are 100 flights a day as Porter needs to actually turn a profit you will regret it. Nobody wants to live, invest or have a business near a busy airport.
TOguy2 4 years ago
You obviously don't read the paper and don't get that this airport has been so heavily subsidized and never has made a profit. There is nothing 'competitive' about it. It's a playground for a bunch of politcal cronies. this is the reason for proposed changes to the Canada Marine Act - so they can get more $ from the feds, as they know there flights to NY won't generate enough revenue.
TOguy2 4 years ago
Since opening in 1938 the Toronto Island Airport has never made a profit. Any commercial airlines have not succeeded. I doubt that Toronto profits from the handful of business folk who fly in for a couple of hours and are treated to tax subsidized free (usually empty) buses, ferries cappucinos, and internet connections. Boycott the island airport!
Flyingpollutesearth 4 years ago
These planes are only flying at 28% full according to an insider bigwig at Porter Air. With 70 seats that's 20 passengers, many of those free tickets. Porter kicked out the competition when they booted Jazz, now having a monopoly on the Island Airport.
How is this great for business?
