  • Carl...great gift from the kids....but gotta say.,.. I like that squeaky haha! Keep it round! Jeff

  • Hi, im new at turning (never done it before) and im looking at the turncraft commander from penn state, also im looking at this delta 46-460, which would you reccomend? for the same price i can get the turncraft with all the pen turning accesories that i want.

    Thanks, Josh.

  • @TheInternalKillerXx Hi Josh,

I am a little bais. I just got the 46-460 and love it.

  • @TheInternalKillerXx What ever you get, think about it first and do not jump to the first one you look at, I did and got a mini lathe and within a few weeks I went back and got a larger lathe because the mini did not do all I wanted. What I would do is find someone with a lathe or visit your local woodturners club and and talk to the turners in your area and try out what they have and then decide which one you want. Don't get me wrong I love my mini lathe but use the larger one alot more.

  • @lorddennis1 As a matter of fact, I tought this out very well since wasting 800+ (with accessories) isnt something I would want to do. Well I am going to be taking a pen turning class to learn some techique and get a feel of what it would be to turn stuff. Then I will have about 5 days to think about it before I make my purchase. I live in ottawa, ON (Canada), do you know of any good clubs around here?

  • This model lathe followed me home about a year ago and it's beefy enough for metal spinning.

  • Hello there. I just got the same lathe last week. And was just looking for other reviews and came across your vids. They're very informative. I have some questions if you don't mind;

    1. What kind of chuck are you using? I was planning on getting the Barracuda 2 from Penn State Industries.

    2. What kind of finish are you using for most of your bowls?

    Thanks for your help.

  • @SuperLumberjock. Hi, I use a Nova chuck and am very happy with it. I would use salad bowl finish if you're going to serve food out of it.

  • Happy New Year Carl and to your Family from here in the UK. Nice lathe, will miss the squeeks tho :)

    Cheers

    Mike

  • you must of been a good boy last year, cool lathe. happy new year!

  • Just thought I would let you know your NEW LATH is exactly like mine..Mine is about 6 months old now and It was my first and I just love turning ...Im sure you will enjoy it as well...Doug

  • Hi carl, all the very best for 2012,like the new lathe have fun john.

  • Hi Carl Thanks for all the inspiration over the year Happy new year to you and your family

  • Hey Carl, Happy New Year. That is a nice lathe. I almost bought the same one. It was up at the top of my list. But then I found a Jet 1442VS on Craig's list for $400.00 and just couldn't past it up. I wish the Jet was reversing though. Good luck with it and can't wait to see you turn on it.

  • carl,

I'm planning on purchasing a chuck with some money I got for christmas. Any recommendations? I was thinking of the SuperNova but the price is pretty high. However, I would rather buy one and cry once. I heard some of the cheaper ones can have problems vibrating like the ones you purchase from Harbor Freight tools for 50 bucks. Anyway, what is your advice? Thanks,

    Ben

  • @021679 Dont buy anything you plan on keeping or using from harbor freight. Its all junk thats made in China

  • Greetings and Happy New Year to you Carl from Australia!

I appreciate your work in putting these vids together and look forward to getting them. Keep the tips and ideas coming. Enjoy your net toy!

  • Hi Carl. I have the exact same lathe. I bought it for myself thru amazon about a month ago. I got the stand from delta that goes with it and I do NOT recomend it. IMO it is to light weight but I love the lathe. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. Keep those videos coming. I enjoy those too.

  • Hi Carl happy new year to you and your family, great new lathe,I am quite new to turning and your video's are very help full many thanks

  • You thank us for watching but its the other way. We thank you for making the videos so we have some one to learn from. No classes or wood turner around me that I can find

  • Thanks Carl for the NEW lathe tour...I want one now..

Hope you have a nice new year and look forward to watching the pen turning.......

  • Your new lathe looks and sounds fantastic! Looking forwards to the pen projects!

  • nothin better then starting the new year with a new lathe look forward to seein it in use

  • New Lathe looks good, Carl! You just can’t beat a new Christmas toy for the shop. Have a great New Year!

    - Jim

  • Nice new lathe Carl, and a great idea to use the old one as a buffer.

Makes my machine sound steam powered!!

Jealousy is now running through my veins. lol.

Hope you have many happy hours turning on it.

Looking forward to seeing more of your creations.

Wishing you & your family a very happy and propsperous 2012.

    Gerry

  • Does anyone no where i can buy lathe chisel blades with out the handles. I started making my own handles out of oak and using sharpened metal files as blades. Im looking for skews and gouges

  • so your job is how u got the paint u turned of was that from a diff job

  • Hi Carl. Cool Lathe for sure. I have a question about the sand paper you use Do you use wood or auto or some other kind designed for wood turning? Also about your chisel handles, are they hardwood or soft?

    Thanks

    Steve

  • Im glad to see they changed the set screw on the tool rest. I have a delta midi lathe thats a couple years old and the set screw has a plastic handle that stripped out a while ago so the tool rest wont stay in place and keeps slipping into my wood.

  • Hi Carl, Many thanks for the videos, look forward to more in 2012. Happy New Year.

    Pete

  • Hi, Carl:

Congrats on the new lathe! They can really pack a lot of features into a small package these days. :) I bought a midi lathe last spring and it was really nice to be able to set it up in the shade in the back yard in the summer time and turn out there. There shouldn't be any reason that the banjo off the 46-700 won't work on the new lathe and allow you to use all the rests you already have. You might need to change or modify the clamp block that goes under the bed.

    Good Luck!

    Bob

  • @bobham5 Thanks Bob, I watched your video a while back where you were turning out side it looked great. I was thinking about putting wheels on the stand so I could wheel it out in the driveway :) Thanks I'll definitely try to make the old rest work.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • did you get it from sears.com?

  • @TheRestin1 "Woodcraft"

  • @haydenHD hey they should of gave it to you for free look at all the free ads its getting

  • That is soooo cool! That's nice enough to sneak out of bed for a quick turn or two. Very happy for you Carl. Awesome machine!

  • @BradburyGuy Thanks Guy No more squeaking LOL. have a great New Year.

  • Lol. Congrats Carl! I also got a mini lathe for Christmas. :) Can't wait to get tools so I can turn!

  • I wish I had kids like that

  • How many times are u going to say umm with this one LOL !

    I have the Delta 460 & luv it .

Lots of great turnings ,looking forward to lots more .

  • Carl,

Congratulations on your new lathe! I'm going to miss the squeaking!!! Thank you for all of your videos. New lathe, new year...I'm looking forward to some great new videos!!

  • Hey Carl! I'm just starting out in woodturning and got that same lathe. I got it with the bed extention and the stand. I just got it assembled and leveled and hope to try some of your projects! Now to find some greenwood...

  • Congratulations on your new "toy" enjoy....you deserve it...

Thanks for all the great videos, and have a happy New Year..

  • i have that same lathe and its awsome

great gift and congrats on it

  • That is a great gift! I am sure that you will be very pleased with your new toy. What a great display of love and appreciation for you from your family.

This is the same lathe that was recently given to me by my wife for our anniversary. It is my first lathe and I have been very happy with it.

    Happy New Year!

  • Carl -- You must have some terrific kids, who realize they have a terrific Dad!

You're going to love the 46-460 ... since I got mine (last July), my wife tells people I am keeping a mistress named Delta!

Thanks for your videos ... they are a great help to newbies like me!

  • Hej Carl, happy for ya and the same to you too !!

  • Parabéns pelo novo torno.

    Antônio - Brasil

  • Your kids got you a great gift. Delta makes great Machinery and when they came out with this lathe they crushed the other midi lathe brands... Looks like they put a knew design switch on the lathes know??? Thanks for posting. Happy New Year

    Thanks, Michael Frey

  • hi Carl glad to see you have a new lathe I have a little small jet as well I brought it on holiday last year. The wife and the kids couldn't believe it when I took it out from the camper van.

No point going to a wood with no tools LOL

    Happy turning

    Robbie

  • @robbiethewood That's awesome!!! that's dedication LOL

  • Wow excellent gift. I am a little jealous... no a lot jealous! lol Well deserved. btw Western Stars rock! I drove truck for 15yrs. thanks, gregg

  • damn i am so jealous... start turning with the delta carl!!!

  • Thank you Carl!!! for sharing all these awesome turning projects and ideas, I know you will

really enjoy that new lathe, I just got a similar (axminster AW1416VS) and it's as quiet as the one you got, and it's a pleasure working with it, the only sound is basically from cutting the wood. Well congrats to the new lathe and thanks for a lots of inspiration and knowledge.

    regards from Sweden //Ken

  • Cool lathe Carl. I have one just like it. You are going to love it. Still haven't mounted mine yet cause I can't decide where to put it, but it sure is fun. Someone really loves you. I had to buy my own. Thank you for all the video's. You have taught me so much. God Bless and have a safe and happy New Year.

  • hey carl you need some more towels there my friend. you will love that lathe. i have the same one and a rikon. and love them both. gonna use the rikon for buffing also.

  • That is an awsome tool. I cant wait to see you use it. I have been looking at that same 3 wheel buffing sytem. I think your Idea using the old lathe as a buffer would work great. It's better then changing out the system each time to buff. Plus, it's better and cheaper then buying a low speed buffing motor with the buffers. Anyway Merry Christmas and happy new year to you too. May God Bless.

  • what is it with the add on here now, glad you got one , I bet you will have fun with it, and I guess you a happy to work lone hours, I wish I could do more work, it would be better than hearing, my wife talk about the man in the white house doing us so much good now days. may you have a very Marry New Year, hope to see your work on your new lathes soon

  • Really nice lathe Carl. Happy New Year.

  • Pretty! :)

  • Hi Carl, new subscriber here. I got a JET mini lathe for Christmas. I have always been interested in turning bowls, now I can give it a try.Keep up the great work on getting your instructional videos out. Good luck with your new lathe and best wishes for a new year.

    Jamestown NY, Steve

  • Ooh shiny.

  • The lathe looks great. And so quiet! I think, I'll try to get one here in Germany.

    Happy New Year. Hubert

  • great lathe. Like that it goes so slow on the low end. I just got a lathe from harbor freight about a month ago. Has a 12 inch swing plus outboard capable. problem is that my bandsaw is gutless so i try turning large pieces roughed out with chainsaws an the lathe and 3 bags of sand bounce across the floor cause it only goes down to 600 rpms.

  • Nice lathe, I can't believe they can make them so quiet.

Happy new year and happy turnings.

  • Carl, what a nice gift. You deserve to have a new lathe. I also have an old lathe that I use for nothing but my buffing. I have it set up with the 3 buffing wheels. it doesn't work that good for large things because the wheels get in the way. But for small stuff it is great. You'll love it if you have the room in your shop. I'll be looking forward to your pen project. I have never done one ofd them.

  • nice looking lathe there Carl

  • Great Lathe I've had mine for more than a year and I love it.

  • Well, someone has been a good boy! Super lathe and health to enjoy. 3 buffs on a rod are good for smaller stuff but bigger bowls are easier moved around individual buffs on a long mandrel. I am doing a motor upgrade on my lathe but I had a wee problem...all my fault, so had to call in my engineer mates. More later.

Happy New Year to you, and yours. Brendan.

  • @37zeus37 it means good luck

  • A great healthy and safe year is our prayer for you and yours for the New Year. Thanks a million for the informative videos. From Kiwiland

  • Carl, I read all the blogs. Too some it up (LIFE IS GOOD). Best for you an family for the new year

    Ron Marietta Ga

  • Hello Well done I've long ago I told you that you need to replace lathe. Because I can see your skill And that newer is right for you. Nice work with the new lathe. Bay

  • beautiful machine. grats!

  • That's quite a nice Christmas present you got there! Can't wait to see some new videos of ya using it.

  • Santa was good to you.

Can't wait to see you use that lathe.

    Congratulations.

  • Oooooohhhh! A new toy! That's a nice one! That has a 12" swing over the bed, right? I'd love to have one of those, but there's one I've been looking at from General International that has a 14" swing and variable speed for almost the same price. I have heard good things about these new Delta Midi Lathes. I know bobham6 uses one of the G.I. Maxi Lathes sometimes when he's not using his Nova DVR. Wouldn't mind having one of those, either.

Happy New Year to you, Carl.

  • This is a State of the Art Power Tool. The Design Performance and looks of this Power tool are unique.I`m a proud Owner of this tool and the only thing needed is time for the projects

As soon as you turn your first there is no turning back to your pervious lathe.

I do recommend the Stand (the delta) its very ergonomic and also has a built in tool holder

  • I would like to hear a review on your thoughts after you run this machine...46-460 cause I been thinking about buying this one as my first lathe..... actually I was looking @ the 5 speed with 3/4 hp... 500 rpm---4000... thanks christopher

  • @christopher002600 Spend the extra money and get 46-460, you will be surprised at how handy the variable speed is. The reverse is great for sanding as well.

  • WoW that's super quiet - I've got a Rikon Mini no where close to quiet. I'd love to have the variable speed and reverse. I got my modular toolrest, TBC bushings for pens and my LC from Johnny cnc @ pen turners products. If you can' t your rest over take a look at his they rock.

  • What kind of live center do u use

  • Very cool Carl. I have a General International. After 6 months I had to replace the spindle pulley and bearings. ... I will be replacing it soon I hope with the Nova DVR.

From all the reports I have read. You will not be disappointed

  • How often do u sharpen your commonly used tools and what is your oppinion on jet vs Delta mini lathe?

  • @waxmonster123 Hello, I thought I would through in my 2 cents on the jet vs Delta mini lathes, they are both good machines. The biggest plus by far on the delta is the ease of changing belt speeds, the jet you have a very small door on the back and even with my smaller hands is a pain in the --- however the delta has the big door right up front, very easy to open check belt and change without any problems. just my thoughts, Have a good one.

  • Awesome lathe Carl! sounds so smooth, I can't wait for you to make the pens on it and upload your new video. Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year!

  • Great lathe Carl, that is the same one I got last year. The only thing that might give you any problems to start is that the Delta is lighter then your old larger machine so you might get more vibrations then you are used to. I know I say this all the time, But Thanks for all the time you put into your videos and sharing your skills with us. Have a great new year.

  • Have a great and happy New Year, too. I wish you many new projects on this new lathe

  • Congrats for the new lathe! that is actually the same Delta lathe I am saving for! Please could you do a review on it? the good the bad and the ugly! Thanks!

  • Very nice. Good idea using the old lathe as a dedicated buffing station. I wish I'd thought of that before I sold my Jet mini when I upgraded.

  • Glad to hear about the new lathe Carl. You deserve it & I hope you enjoy it. Happy New Year.

    Norm.

  • Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills over the last year Carl, I've learn't a great deal from you and I'm all the better. Belated Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

    -Scott.

  • You're going to LOVE the new lathe. I got mine a couple months back and it's been a dream to use. Super quiet and more than capable of turning anything you could throw at it. Enjoy the new lathe and look forward to seeing what your first project will be.

  • I appreciate all the videos you post.

Looking forward to hearing how your new Delta works.

What a great gift. All the best for the New Year.

  • Hey Carl I actually used to work at the Western Star plant in Kelowna BC in the paint dep. It was my first job after high school. I got laid off after 1 week because I was hired right before the knew about the closer.

I picked up my first lathe yesterday and used it for the first time today and didn't do too bad. Watching your videos prepared me for it.

When I get the Arbutus from my friends on Van. Isle. I'll see if I can send some your way.

    Thanks.

    Steve .

  • @LordMikkell Hi Steve that's funny I work in the paint department too I've been there for 18 years.

  • actually you have a MIDI my Jet 1014 is a mini

really good for smaller bowls and turning, I think you'll like it alot

  • im the second

  • your first turning should be a woodworkers mallet...
