Common law marriage differs somewhat from culture to culture; it is created by the State to ensure its continued existence and maintenance. Christian marriage is a special spirituality reality instituted for the accomplishment of specific spiritual goals that the State has no right to impose on society at large. Should Christians be overly concerned about the State's definition of marriage, which by definition must address the needs of religious and non-religious persons?
Commonlaw marriage was created by the state in order to give some stability and basis for family as the state became a more complex organism that the tribe. In fact, previously, marriage was simply the purchase or capture of a bride, whether, like Jacob, the price was labour, or whether the father of the groom arranged a marriage for his son.
