OK press 5 if you agree: I think at any time Wolcott could have drawn his knife and cut Charlie Utter good. Sure Charlie may have killed him anyway, but I think deep, down Francis wanted that beating to appease some sick guilt. He had SOME remorse...even though he was a sick peice o shit.
Charlie Utter far from a hero. He was a bad man by the standard of the time. For instance when he walked in on a murder he turned around and walked away.
The only consistently good character was Sol Star. He had values and he stuck to them; and he wasn't judgmental of other peoples lifestyles. If anyone of the characters could be called a hero it's Sol Star
@Bronco46tube Not really that was hurst men who were going to kill Al no matter what. He knew who his allies was. He was a good honorable man. I agree though Sol Star was consistently good all around. The most in the show.
@Bronco46tube The real Charlie Utter could hardly be called a bad man, especially by the standards of those times. The only two times he was ever convicted of breaking the law was selling liquor without a license, then of maintaining a nuisance dance hall. After 1880, he basically vanished until the early 1900s when according to his biographer he turned up in Panama where owned two drugstores and was at that point, blind.
On the show I dont recall him walking in on a murder then walking away
@curlyeye Charley walked into the Gem right after Dan and Al had killed two men with knives; he turned and walked out. It was in the episode I'm not the fine man you take me for. He walked in while Al was still holding the man he had killed. Charley nearly said "I'll be back after I've et (ate).
Even though the way they portrayed Charlie Utter was apparently not that historically accurate, it was awesome to see their version of him - some guy really uncomfortable in town who knows all about the wilderness down to the different tribes and their fighting rituals - kick the ass of some big-business geologist who might have known a lot about economics, but not enough about deadwood.
I have a feeling the writers had a lot of experience with being bullied after seeing this scene and hearing Bullock give a few monologues on the subject.
lol "pussified shooting instrument". i was so happy when utter beat the hell out of francis, i hated the character, the actor who played him did a great job. i hope they give this series an ending even though i know they never will.
Gotta love Charlie. Here's a man who took no shit from anyone (apart from Jane, but that's another story) and always did right by the people he cared for. If that meant handing a cunt like Wolcott his ass, so be it.
@curlyeye Wild Bill could be considered a hero as well, despite all the bodies on him, the good could always feel safe with him. Funny fate saw two of them killed before their time, like in real life (Martin Luther King, Ghandhi, etc).
@hobbie4 Well, I didn't mean it like a super-star-hero-kinda-thing. But if I'm not much mistaken he has very few "beefs" with anyone that come out of bad intentions. He only wants what's best for people.
Believe it or not. I'm actually related to Charlie Utter. I just got done watching the first two episodes of Deadwood (Due to me being so young when they were still producing it) And my mom had said "You know we're related to him." I was so excited!
The fight certainly wasn't a casual matter.

Charlie is excellent in this scene and on the show.
Garrett Dillahunt is excellent as well. What a compliment that the producers had him play two completely different characters on the show.

Charlie Utter was maybe the only true "hero" on Deadwood.Everyone else had,at least, some shades of grey.

what about bullock? charlie's just the deputy but bullock's the sheriff and originally repulsed by swearengen upon their first meeting.
RohanYasdik 2 years ago
@juliomelvin I'd include Whitney Ellsworth as being a true "hero" along with Charlie Utter.

Good guy to be related to. Charlie was pretty badass in real life too from what I gather.
I wonder if Jack McCall's descendents make a habit of mentioning their relationship to him in the same way...?
