And let us not forget, my favorite Beatles song was played in this series; "All You Need Is Love". Too bad it is lost in the hatefest (which has gone way beyond infantile now) being directed at today's Prisoner Number 6 (of Miami).
The butler was Number 1 (yeah, the butler did it).
He was the only character to appear in every episode. Remember McGoohan wasn't in "Do Not Foresake Me Oh My Darling;" he was filming "Ice Station Zebra." He drove the truck during the escape during "Fall Out." At the end of "Fall Out," when he approached the door at No 6's apartment (ONE Buckingham) it opened automatically.
I watched the originals back then. Didn't 'get' it all the time. Decided to buy the series on dvd. I couldn't stop watching. PG was a genius. If you can find the dvd's, they are highly recommended!
@n8tureboy Its like punk rock in the seventies, it encompassed how the world was at that time , the original Prisoner made in the sixties with a sixties flavour (rebellion etc) couldnt really be redone nowadays with any substance.
Yea, I think you're right. Boy, the original is some really intelligent film making though. McGoohan was a genius. The metaphor, and the analogies used, were brilliant.
With the 2009 series they make their own thing from the same basic concept but twisted WAY differently, and it's brilliant. Never does it try to "redo" the original at all.
But how would you know after "watching 15 minutes" of it? Eager to join the snub crowd?
It's also not like the original series is that flawless masterpiece either. Plenty of episodes are poorly constructed, and the pacing and characters in some others isn't the best.
@Simbabbad the first 15 minutes was enough for me to see it was using the original series as a cover to claim to be a "new" series, i have my view your entitled to yours.
We see clues in certain episodes - "Arrival" and "Free For All" spring to mind - that The Village was perfectly capable of cloning people. They cloned No6 and put him in charge of The Village as No1, the idea being he was fighting himself every step of the way in order to escape.
The overall theme of the show is collectivisim verses individualisim, the ending, where 1 is shown to be 6 is social commentary on the "evil" within everyone and No. 1 as the ruler over the village is presented as everyone.
Patrick McGoohan wanted to leave the identity of Number One as an allegory, so we will still be debating the show 40 years later. It turned out to be better for his residual income. After all, no one debates who Dr. No is, because it was so obvious in James Bond. Anyway, my Episode 5 is called The Schizoid Man. Number 6 meets an exact double of himself, who is better in many ways, such as fencing and getting the confidence of his girl friend, Number 24. My theory is he was really Number 1.
My theory is the "Double 6" (Number 12) in Schizoid Man did not really die from Rover (just an overgrown balloon) and returned in the final episode to taunt 6. No one mentioned plastic surgery, so maybe he was an "evil twin" separated at birth, and unknown to 6. While 6 joined the British Secret Service, his twin joined the New World Order. It seemed to me that Schizoid Six was really Number 1, as he was quite smart and strong. Number 2 always said "Yes Sir" referring to Number 1 as a man.
ONLY Patrick himself was No. 1? I believe there clearly are additional references visible in Fall Out to others "objects of worship" such as the lunacy of Mutually Assured Destruction, The obvious "Right of the Individual to be Individual...." as well as the Essential: "We Are All Prisoners of Ourselves." More social commentary than exclusively that of the id.
Its the same metaphor in Matthew VII Judge lest be judge for what measure you mete will be measured to you again...science of perception is what is missing in religious ideology mularky...Check out my book about Egonomics which explains this pretty well. the Vail is the disguise we form in capitalism...
@JoeChrisMorris Agree completely. Ruined a great opportunity. Far too much emphasis on updating it, and what happened to the cool music? And the sly humour? I suppose they really needed Patrick McGoohan to figure out how to do this, and direct it.
@JoeChrisMorris Excellent observation. I had trouble finding the appropriate words for the meaning of Number 1 revealed, and Number 6 sees a man with his face.
Something for Number 6 of Miami to consider. He should watch the entire series, because he too is a prisoner, already with parallels between himself and McGoohan's character. Only when he confronts number 1 (himself) will he be victorious. From what I've seen, that is pretty much the last piece of the puzzle for him.
@JoeChrisMorris My mistake...Number 1, with regard to Number 6 of Miami, is sort of a paradox. In one case, it is TWO people: His opponent, AND himself. In the other case, his opponent and himself are one and the same. The sooner he overcomes and conquers Number 1, he too will be victorious, just like Number 6 in 'The Prisoner'. That is what I seem to think was put on display throughout this entire series.
Initially I thought #1 was the Anti-Christ and #2 was the Image of the Beast. But I love McGoohan's final message, that we are our own #1's - and it is ourselves that we must confront and overcome to liberate ourselves. I wonder if George Lucas had THE PRISONER in mind when Luke cuts off Vader's head at the vision on Dagobah and sees his own face behind the mask?
I bough the entire series on cassette years ago and have never watched the final episode (mainly cos I saw it on TV!), but the Ballistic Nuclear Missile also appeared on another of The Prisoner episodes... I think (not 100% sure), was it not the lighthouse in "The Girl Who Was Death"?
Yeah, I took the ending to mean that there was no one particular man who was Number 1. But rather Number 1 was a melding of the deceit, evil, and manipulative side of human beings.
Really the missile is a metaphor. Number 6 is number one and the missile represents the self-destructive influence in any society where we become prisoners of ourselves and our society. Eventually, BANG! (Or POP, as the American series showed)
yeah thats the way ive always seen it to, that line at the start, also number 6 was the man in his younger days invented the idea of the the village, he found out that his youthful plan had actually been put into action and the only way to bring it down was from the inside, hence him resinging from his job as he new he would be sent there
Please, get ya hand off it. Sin is a HUMAN creation, NOT God's! Besides you are obviously a sheep and NEED to be lead. You wanna follow, fine that's YOUR choice, but DON'T try to cajole others into also being followers when they just MIGHT be leaders!
I would rather lead than follow blindly.
Anyway, THIS post has NOTHING to do with Jesus. It's about Number 1 in the Village!
Jesus is number one, tell God in prayer that you believe in Him. The series had a meaning and purpose... there is an enemy within that is sin; the purpose was to sell commercial time, Gods purpose has always been to save you from your sins so you stop going in circles in this life and can escape hell in the next. Please pray to accept Jesus.
ok... what happened to the missile? It took off, where was it aimed at?

basically a treatise on rebellion (the rebellion of youth, the rebellion of authority biting the hand that feeds it, & etc)
